"Sex and the City": Friends are familyLast Friday, the full-length Sex and the City movie trailer was leaked online. I’ll admit it: I’m excited about this movie. And I say that as someone who took quite a long time to become a fan of the show. When it first premiered in 1998, the glossy-looking previews got me to tune in, expecting a New York–based comedy along the lines of Friends. What I got seemed a lot more along the lines of soft porn to me — plus a seemingly endless run of terrible puns and vacuous-sounding questions from sex columnist Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) — and I just as quickly tuned out. When friends talked about the show to me, I told them in no uncertain terms that I couldn’t stand it.
Yet somehow, around the time of the fifth or sixth season, I found myself taking another look. And whether it was just because I had gotten older, or because the show had gotten a lot better, I unexpectedly found myself being drawn into it. Carrie seemed less brittle, self-obsessed and neurotic to me, and I found myself noticing what a good friend she was. Prissy Charlotte (Kristin Davis) had met her perfect match in the short, bald, fat Harry (Evan Handler) and had loosened up a bit. Slutty Samantha (Kim Cattrall) was no longer shagging everything that moved, but seemed on the verge of settling into an actually rather touching relationship with Smith (Jason Lewis) — plus I admired the tough, steely way she was handling breast cancer. And then there was Miranda.
Even before I knew that Cynthia Nixon played for our team (and even before she handled being outed in such a classy, fuss-free way), Miranda was always my favorite of the four women. Like Dana on The L Word, she seemed the most normal, the most relatable, and the most down-to-earth of the show’s glamorous, high-earning female characters. Even if they are straight, I also really liked her relationship with Steve (David Eigenberg). Defensive, unromantic Miranda’s unwillingness to admit that she liked him made total sense to me — plus there was the fact that Nixon is such a good actress (she won an Emmy for her role in 2004). While I can’t find a clip of my favorite moment between them — where Miranda thinks she has lost Steve and finally admits she loves him — this one is pretty funny: The center of the show, of course, is the friendship between the four women — and, as you might expect, this is the aspect of it that I most enjoyed. Yes, all the women are straight. But watching Miranda call after Carrie after they have had a fight — “Carrie I love you, come back" — or watching the girls’ supportive reactions to Samantha’s news that she has breast cancer, it feels like you are watching women who are life partners emotionally, even if not sexually. Trying to explain to her boyfriend Aleks how she feels about Samantha’s illness, Carrie tells him that: “Samantha is my friend. She's my family. My insides. She will be fine because she has to be fine. That's how important she is to me.” And as Mr. Big tells Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda in the show’s penultimate episode: “You're the loves of [Carrie’s] life, and a guy's just lucky to come in fourth.”
If all that’s not enough of an incentive for you to see the movie, then there’s the fact that it also features Jennifer Hudson (though how big a role she’ll play isn’t totally clear from the trailer ... and what I really want to know is, is she going to sing?)
Anyway, to put you in a musical mood, I’ll leave you with this Sex and the City–inspired video for the Destiny’s Child song "Girl." Anything that involves Beyoncé holding hands with girls works for me: Are you looking forward to the movie? Did you love or hate or “eh” the show when it was on TV? Let me know below. SATC
I'm not sold on the movie quite yet...I mean, how does one drag a storyline like that out for 90+ minutes? But the ladies look fabulous and it's inevitable that I'll end up in the theatres on opening weekend.
I didn't get into SATC until the latter seasons, but have since caught up on DVD. I think my two favorite relationships were Miranda and Steve (does that trailer suggest that he may have cheated? If so, it seems completely OOC) and Samantha and Smith Jerrod (are they really going to end that relationship? It was so heartwarming!).
On another note, I don't think I'd ever seen that Destiny's Child video...which is unusually weird given that I know the guy who produced the track. Woohoo, 9th Wonder!

Samantha & Smith?
What happened to them? I didn't see Smith in the promo. I'm guessing Samantha is single for the movie? darn....
Smith is in the promo. I
Smith is in the promo.
I also loved the relationship between Miranda and Steve. I love the episode where they have broken up, but they end up having dinner together at their favorite restaurant. I love it when Steve tells Miranda (paraphrasing) that they are the only ones who know what really happened in their relationship. That's when I knew they were meant to be together.
On a shallow note, Kristen Davis' legs look incredible in that picture, and J. Hudson looks so cute. I hope this isn't a singing role for her, and that the character is three dimensional. I remember there were some rumors when she first got the part that it would be the stereotypical Black woman role, and that she asked the directors to change that.
I'll pass
I'm not a big fan of shows like SATC. I always find them exhausting to watch.
Then again, when comparing it to shows like Cashmere Mafia, SATC is awesome.
I won't be seeing the movie though.

WoooHoooo
Impatiently waiting...
LOVED SATC back when, and I love watching the DVDs of it now. It is such a well-written show and was one of the firsts (that I can think of) that accurately portrays the bonds that women are capable of having.
I too, remember the quote Carrie says regarding Samantha's cancer. So heartfelt.
I can't wait to see this movie!!

I..CAN'T... WAIT!!!!1!!!11
I'm a total fan girl when it comes to this show.
There are so many female friendship moments that made me love this show.
One of my favorite episodes deals with the concept of soulmates. Any Charlotte says, that maybe there isn't just one soulmate for everyone, but she's lucky enough to have 3 (in regards to the girls).
To go further, in what was mentioned in the article. After Big makes that statement, Miranda says, "Go get our girl" I cheer a little inside everytime.
Honestly, as a Bi-girl, this kept getting better and for me as viewer. CN coming out was big.
Also, the fact that a lesbian was pretty much dictating the style that a generation of women were trying to aspire to.
Samantha being in a relationship with a woman was big too. This was really significant and I like how they treated it on the show. Samantha has only been 3 relationships the entire run of the show, so it was really great that one of them was with the female artist, whose name escapes me. It wasn't diminished in anyway to me.
Another thing that I really like about it was there was a deep loving connection between these women that I never picked up any subtext on. I love subtext, but I appreciated the fact that there were no sexual overtone/undertones between the friends.
Adore this show.
I'll be there opening night.
It's on and crackalackin
The show is fabulous. Loved SATC from the jump and I still watch it on DVDs and on tbs. I'm a little nervous about the movie though. But I'll be there, with chanel bells on and a tartini in my hand
Excited!
Yay! I really can't wait for the movie.
I had qualms with the show here and there, but overall, it was so nice to see the bond between those four women.
Just to throw my favorite scene into the mix: In Season 4, when Miranda's mother passed away and Carrie got out of her seat to walk with Miranda behind the casket. I've seen it several times, and it still gets to me.
During the final episode, my friends and I got together to watch and drink cosmos (of course). I promised myself I wouldn't cry ... and then when Samantha got all emotional and told Smith that he meant more to her than any man ever had, I just couldn't hold back.
Not to mention, the show was often really funny as well. Loved the scene where Samantha attempts to return her broken vibrator -- I mean, "massager" -- at the Sharper Image.
Cannot WAIT!
I must say, I have always loved this show. Even with Carrie's annoying need for attention, I still love watching the DVDs. Mainly because it's a love letter to New York, and I'm always for that.
I for one cannot wait until the movie comes out! I will be at the midnight showing seeing my girls together again!
