Leighton Meester: from “I’m gay” to "Gossip Girl"

Anyone (if there is anyone) who has been following my blog regularly over the past few weeks might have noticed that there have been, well, rather a lot of references to the totally trashy teen soap Gossip Girl.

Now, I will readily admit that a large part of my interest in this show comes from the relationship between the main two female characters, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen (played respectively by Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, pictured below in a shoot for this month’s issue of Vogue).

But even if it wasn’t for all the chemistry between Blair and Serena, there’s a reason I might still be watching. Sarah and Lori may have declared themselves in favor of Blake, but for me it’s all about the lovely Leighton (who, although she plays a teen on the show, fortunately turns 22 in April):

Not only do I love her character’s preppie style, but I also think the actress herself is terrifically pretty.

What I didn’t realize until recently was that I had actually seen her before Gossip Girl, on a gay-themed episode of the sitcom 8 Simple Rules that first aired on March 4, 2005. In the episode, titled "The After Party," Meester plays Nikki, a girl of questionable reputation who agrees to go to the school prom with Rory, the son of the show’s main family. At the same time, Rory’s serious-minded sister, Kerry, has decided to take a girl to the prom even though she is not a lesbian, in order to make a statement about equality and fairness. Seeing Kerry and her date at the prom and mistaking them for a real couple, Nikki is moved to realize something about her own sexuality. Here's a compilation of Nikki’s scenes from the episode:

Well, OK: it’s just a guest appearance, and it’s just a silly sitcom, but still ... cool, huh? Now if anyone finds a clip of my old teen idols Claire Danes or Katie Holmes playing gay, feel free to send it my way!

    Gossip Girl

is one of my guilty pleasures.  Mainly because the characters seem a little more dimensional than a lot of these teen angst series.

I think I like Blair of all the characters. She's a lot more complicated than the rest. And like you I love her clothes.  There's at least one outfit per show that I really like and wish I were young enough to wear something similar.

Can't wait for it to start up again.

As a huge fan of The OC,

As a huge fan of The OC, Gossip Girl very quickly became my guilty pleasure this season, and I gotta agree with you, while Blake is undeniably gorgeous, I'm all about Leighton, and I find Blair the far more interesting character.  I must have missed that ep of 8 Simple Rules, I'll have to keep an eye out for it in the future!!

i'm glad i'm not the only one who tunes into this show every week despite it's obvious shortcmings for Blair. she can be so awful and two faced but you can't help but love her

    Oh, Leighton.

I like Gossip Girl a lot (I intend to buy the books it's based on) because of the stories and how the relationships develop, and mostly of all I like Blair. She is beautiful and she's a major reason to watch the show, but also because it's really interesting. I count myself between those who long for a Blair/Serena storyline, and in fact these two are supossed to engage in a kiss at some point of the story, I don't exactly remember when (for spoilers about the books, go to Wikipedia). So if the writers stick to the books and the original story, we should see something happen sooner or later.

    Leighton and Blake's characters

Personally I don't care for Gossip Girl. the narrator is even more obnoxious than the Pushing Daisies one, but I did enjoy the gay undertones. My friend has read every book and though I love reading I can't bring myself to read what I consider to be socialite crap but I was surprised to find out the guy playing Serena's boyfriend (Dan Humpfrey) comes out of the closet which makes sense to me with a huge cast, one character is bound to be gay. Although Serena and Blair's friendship is interesting and fairly gay I stopped watching because to me its a pretty bland show. The only thing I liked about it were their set designs, specifically in the Humfrey apartment. To me that show slips in a lot of product placement for me to really care.

I can see where you are coming from

I like the chemistry between the two female characters as well, this show doesn't do it for me. Also, I think this show will end up like the O.C. -trendy for now, then people will start making fun of it

    Oh yes

I also loved Leighton Meester's Lolita-esque 2 episode stint on House last season. Hers was one of the sideplots that stuck out for me, so I was pleased when I saw she got a starring TV role. I'm shamefully aboard the Blair/Serena ship.

    the reason I watch

she's distractingly gorgeous. I love her style. Just perfect. Blair and Serena have more chemistry than the girls and any of their male counterparts combined.

    She's really pretty

I am a bisexual here. It's great for LGBT to change from gay to gossip girl. but she 's really pretty, sweet, but also sexy and charming as those on http://bimingle.com . She is really attractive.

has no one read the books?

there is talk in the books of the two main gossip girl characters having had a sexual experience together -- and it's hinted througout the part of the series i read (maybe the first 5 books? ) that blair really loves serena in a more than friendly way -- and that's why she won't have sex with her boyfriend ...
