Katie Melua: the Norah Jones who plays for our team?

The young Soviet-born, British jazz and blues singer Katie Melua is an interesting anomaly in the modern music industry. Few of her singles have even grazed the Top 10 in the U.K. singles charts (though she did achieve a number 1 in 2007 with a charity recording of "What a Wonderful World"), and her public profile is nothing like as high as that of, say, Amy Winehouse.

Yet her three album releases so far have reached No. 1, No. 1, and No. 2 respectively; in 2006, she was the U.K.’s biggest-selling female artist, and Europe’s highest-selling European female artist. She seems to be an example of a generational split in the music-buying public, whereby singles are mostly bought by teens and twentysomethings, while albums are mostly bought by an older audience who put a premium on pleasant tunefulness rather than tabloid exposure and sex appeal.

Though for those who prefer exquisite natural beauty to panty-flashing antics, Melua probably has sex appeal to spare:

In terms of personality, as well, the quiet Melua seems like an intriguing paradox. The majority of her songs are so gentle and inoffensive that some critics see her as unbearably safe and bland. Yet she’s been quite frank about her past use of cannabis, has a taste for hang-gliding and bungee-jumping, appeared in a horror segment of the 2007 film Grindhouse, and mentioned the Babyshambles song “F--- Forever” as one of her 14 favorite pieces of music in a 2006 article.

In interviews, although she’s polite and articulate, there’s something inescapably enigmatic about her. Her long-time musical collaborator, Mike Batt, has been reported as saying in reference to her taste for high-adrenaline activities that “she enjoys extremes, but in life her emotions are always in check.”

I’ll admit that I have a slightly ambivalent attitude towards her music. Of her singles, my favorite is probably her 2005 release "Nine Million Bicycles," from her second album, Piece by Piece:

Musically, I think it’s beautiful, but the lyrics, with their perpetual unimaginative return to romance (“I will always be with yoooou”) are not to my personal taste (though the song was actually written by Batt, not Melua, so she can’t be held entirely responsible).

Also beautiful, as well as less predictable, is the Melua-penned "I Cried for You," also from Piece by Piece. Melua has said that she wrote it after meeting the author of the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, who put to her his theory that Jesus had a romantic relationship with Mary Magdalene — leading her to think about what Mary’s sufferings would have been as she saw Jesus crucified. Be warned — the video, though not gory, is a bit unsettling:

Melua has been mentioned a couple of times on this website, since a tabloid rumor surfaced in 2006 that she was involved in a relationship with lesbian photographer Lara Bloom. The tabloid in question is notoriously unreliable; Melua’s only on-the-record relationship has been with a man (Luke Pritchard of British band The Kooks, whom she split up with in 2005), and it’s worth noting that there are male references in several of her songs and videos. At the same time, it’s nice to see from this interview that Melua isn’t at pains to deny and distance herself from the lesbian/bisexual claim, even if she refuses to comment on her personal life.

Going back to her second single, "Call Off the Search," from her album of the same title released in 2005, it’s also nice to see that the video, while featuring Melua with a male love interest, also includes not one but two lesbian couples (one of whom — in a rarity for film or television — actually looks like a lesbian). See 0:51, 02:39 and 02:47:

Finally, if you want to get a sense of the more down-to-earth side of Melua, as opposed to the fragile, ethereal figure she can seem in her videos, there’s this interview with her on the cult U.K. pop music show Popworld from 2005. Discussing her recent acquisition of British citizenship, she holds her own against the acerbic interviewer Miquita Oliver, who asks her to prove her Britishness by identifying Eccles cakes and crumpets.

So to sum up: she’s beautiful, she can sing, and she can hold down a jellied eel. I’ll admit it: I want her to be on our team, whether she really is or not.

    yeah she's pretty

but her songs are f**king annoying!

she's Georgian rather than Soviet born as i suspect the Soviet Union had already broken up before she was born.

right, i've stopped being a bitch now

    KM

I think her songs are way less annoying than Nora Jones'. Personal taste I guess.

And Katie Melua was born in 1984, at the height of the Cold War and the Soviet Union was still very much on the map.

    Yeah, according to Wikipedia...

... Georgia was still part of the Soviet Union in 1984. I would have put "Georgian-born", but there wasn't a concise way to explain that I wasn't talking about Georgia USA and I didn't want to confuse people!

"one of whom — in a rarity for film or television — actually looks like a lesbian."

Give me a break. What is that supposed to mean? That femme women aren't lesbians? What does "look like a lesbian" mean? If you mean someone who is more butch, just say that. Don't imply that feminine women can't look or be gay.

    Never mind.

I also found that extrodinarily offensive...

As someone who has encountered at least as much prejudice from "my" conmunity as I have from the younger more cultured elements of the straight community, precisely because I don't "look gay". Whatever that means.

The offered explanation won't fly, either. Clearly "gaydar" is an overrated concept.

And yes, the woman in the video is butch. Soft butch, if you like, but as her hair and clothing would not be out of place or attract attention on a straight man, in any way, butch. Which I guess is still where you have to be to look "gay", these days, at least to some. Sad. I would have hoped we'd be past that by now....

    browne's picture

    Sorry...

... I did consider putting "looks butch", but if you watch the video, I wouldn't actually say that quite describes the woman in question. She just looks... well... not straight. Like it or not, there is such a thing as looking gay - if there wasn't, then gaydar wouldn't exist. If I described the woman as butch when she isn't, then it would be as if I was saying that gay-looking automatically equals butch. Which is kind of what you were objecting to in the first place :)

stop narrowing her down to 9 mio. bicycles

I know this is the song she is most associated with in the wide public...it was her biggest chart success.

But Katie Melua actually has so many beautiful songs which ARE NOT like 9 mio. bicycles. This is not the song which represents the strongest characteristics of her lyrically well-written, beautiful tunes. This is one of the few songs, I hope I remember this correctly, which is NOT written by her or her alone.

Here some links to other beautiful songs off her album Piece by Piece:

    I HATED that song...

when I first heard it - horrifically annoying whiny tune, the stupidest lyrics I'd ever come across, and I read about her everywhere. Then I heard her cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven, which was really quite fantastic, and now I want an album. But I still prefer her ex-boyfriend's band - nothing beats British rock, honestly!
    hinterguxli_CH's picture

    yeah, nerve-wrecking

when it was in the charts for ages. radio stations would play it at the highest frequence  non-stop. for months. phew... glad we've passed those incredible 9 mio!

I too thought that I wouldn't like KM cause of this one stupid song.... till a friend of mine talked me into giving the album (piece by piece) a chance. I listened to it and got it right away. now it is one of my all-time faves ever (when I am up for softer music i.e.). :-)

and of course katie is just - lacking of words - to love. fascinating. deep. I really do adore her. also for her low-key public image! isn't she just gorgeos? both from the inside and the outside!

    well...

I have never really listened to her (not my type of music) but she is obviously very talented and successful and she seems to be very down to earth so I say good for her.

The only reference I have of her is that my grandmother is obsessed with her and her music! She talks about her all the time and the only thing she wants for christmas or birthdays are her cds/dvds or whatever you can find of hers. My grandmother is also slightly homophobic, so if she were to be gay/bi it would be interesting to se if she would still like her...

    how dare you call Miquita

how dare you call Miquita Oliver 'acerbic'!!! no but seriously, how is she acerbic? she's funny and friendly, just in the classic T4 Popworld sarcastic and random manner. She's amazing...
    TheFoolOnTheHill's picture

    haha yeah

i knida agree with purpledawnie...i don't see Miquita Oliver as acerbic...incredibly sarcastic and dry, yes, but that's just her humour. I find her hilarious. T4 Popworld did this interview with Hillary Duff where they made her eat this kebab thing that had been made in this wierd turkish i think resteraunt and she was really kinda freaked out and thought they were being mean to her...they weren't in the slightest, they talk to everyone in that way...it's just their humour. I was laughing my head off.

I doubt Miquita would have been remotely unkind to Katie Melua, there's like nothing to rip her about, she's nice and quaint and stuff.

    That aint no Etch-a-Sketch...

    Nessie2000's picture

    She's fantastic!

Thanks so much for reminding me how much I love Katie Melua.

Whilst she's not necessarily 'pop chart' material here in the UK, I don't think that's a bad thing - there's so much more to music than some of the rubbish churned out week after week that sells 200 copies and goes to Number One (yes, i know, I'm sounding like my dad!).

My point is that Katie Melua is a great talent in British music, alongside Jamie Cullum and Clare Teal, and whilst she may or may not 'bat for our team', I won't hold it against her whilst she's churning out great songs which are fab to have on during a dinner party or two! Alongside the aforementioned of course.

Anyhoo, my wife and I were fortunate to see Katie Melua at Kenwood House in London three summers ago - you know the scene - cold, damp, British evening, sitting in a deckchair, eating an M & S picnic and quaffing champers whilst watching a fabulous outdoor concert across the lake as the sun sets - a perfect summer's evening!

Now, if only you could get an interview with Clare Teal.............! Pretty Please?!
