"I'd Do Anything" finale: Jodie becomes Nancy

If you were watching I’d Do Anything on BBC1 on Saturday night, you’ll know that the part of Nancy in Cameron Mackintosh’s new West End production of the musical Oliver! has been carried off by 28-year-old Blackpool native Jodie Prenger.

Although Jodie was naturally thrilled to win the talent competition, I can’t help thinking that her victory must have been soured a little by the fact that both Mackintosh and judge Andrew Lloyd Webber made it abundantly clear that they preferred her 18-year-old rival, Irish Jessie Buckley. Since the final was decided entirely by public votes, however, the two theatrical bigwigs could only look on as the audience made the decision first to eliminate 17-year-old contestant Samantha Barks, and then Jessie – leaving Jodie triumphant.

The first part of the final, which would see the remaining three contestants reduced to two, featured solo performances from all the girls. First up was Jodie with a rendition of Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man,” in which she seemed a bit nervous and restrained to me, although she did deliver by the end. Webber, displaying a lack of prophetic vision (or perhaps just indulging in wishful thinking) said that he questioned whether it was a winning performance. But judge John Barrowman (who has become increasingly vocal about his anti-Jessie stance) insisted that you always believed in Jodie when she sang the words of a song – a judgment I would agree with.

Next up was Sam, with the Dionne Warwick song “Anyone Who Had A Heart.” Interestingly enough, this song was performed by contestant Siobhan Dillon in the final of the previous BBC talent competition How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria? and she, like Sam, was the first of the final three to go. It seems to me like a very tricky song to perform if you’re trying to prove that you can act and show vulnerability (which Sam was). Although the lyrics seem to indicate sadness and longing, there’s a campiness to the music that makes it difficult to really dig deep into any emotion. Since acting was never Sam’s strong point anyway, this song may have been what helped to do her in.

Finally, Jessie performed the Roberta Flack tune, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” I’ve tended to think that Jessie does better at connecting emotionally with a song than Sam – she does at least have something behind the eyes – but her rendition here seemed to me to be overly mannered and stagy. Nevertheless, both Mackintosh and Webber gave her performance rave reviews. Mackintosh said that “I think Jessie was born to play Nancy,” while Webber said that “Jessie has the sacred flame of star quality.” Either they really like Jessie, or they just really, really didn’t want Jodie to win. In either case, their comments just seemed bizarre to me – while I think Jessie is attractive and has potential, “sacred flame” and “star quality” just aren’t phrases I would use in connection with her.

Admittedly, I probably enjoyed her duet the most out of the three Oliver/Nancy pairings that followed. But that had less to do with Jessie than the fact that she was paired with adorable Welsh, Gwion, one of the three boys who have already been selected by Webber and Mackintosh to share the role of Oliver. Singing ‘Truly Scrumptious” from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Gwion was natural, relaxed and smiley, and … well, adorable and Welsh. As the judges pointed out, he and Jessie did have chemistry together (although I thought it was more like the chemistry an older sister would have with a younger brother, rather than the maternal chemistry Nancy should have with Oliver). Nevertheless, Jessie seemed a bit distracted to me, and again a bit over the top:

Samantha’s duet with Harry, “Singin’ in the Rain,” was fine but a bit blah. Singing “Getting to Know You” from The King & I with Laurence, I thought Jodie did the best of the three girls – being a bit older, she just naturally has a maternal air that Sam and Jessie haven’t acquired yet. She also seemed to concentrate on and connect with her duet partner the most, rather than singing predominantly to the audience as Sam and Jessie did.

Next up was another highly enjoyable bit, as the three girls were shown rehearsing the Cabaret song “Maybe This Time” with none other than Liza Minnelli, before performing it live for the audience. Watching the rehearsal footage, the main thing that struck me was how incredibly nice, helpful and down-to-earth Liza Minnelli seems. With three young reality TV contestants trying to live up to one of her most legendary performances, you might conceivably expect her to be a bit standoffish – but in fact she seemed genuinely interested in all the girls. She also came off as insightful, saying to Webber of Jodie, “She’s the eldest … so she knows more about that kind of a feeling [expressed in the song]”:

The end of this first part of the final saw Sam voted off, as might have been expected. It also saw guest star Lee Mead – the winner of previous BBC talent competition, Any Dream Will Do, which cast him as Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – say that Jodie was his favorite of the three Nancys.

Nevertheless, Mackintosh and Webber were still waving the flag hard for Jessie when she and Jodie returned for the half-hour showdown. Mackintosh even went so far as to say that “Jessie is Nancy” – leaving him to look rather foolish when it turned out that, in fact, the public had voted for Jodie. (His hasty speaking also seemed, in the long run, rather cruel to Jessie, who was understandably upset at the result after having her hopes raised so high.)

Although I know there are a lot of Jessie fans on this site, I admit that I was rooting for Jodie – she simply seemed much closer to having the life experience, battle-scars, warmth and maternal side that Nancy needs. With that said, and although I do think she’s been a competent and consistent performer, I don’t find her as inspiring and outstanding as I would like to. If anything does get me to the West End to see the show in six months time, it will probably be Gwion.

What about you? Were you pleased or disappointed with the result? And will you be going to see the show?

    Sooo happy!

I'm so so soooo happy Jodie won! I don't get why everybody was for Jessie... Ok, she sure is pretty, but I always thought Jodie was a better singer, and much more believable in her performances. But of course that's just my opinion. I've been rooting for Jodie since the beginning. Just because her performances really move me, something I couldn't say about a lot of the other girls. And frankly, I thought she just deserved it, just because I can imagine it was hard for her to get rolls because of her weight. Jessie will get there anyway.

So... I was very pleased!! Unfortunetly I won't be able to watch the show, since well, I don't live in the UK and don't have the money to go and visit just for the show, haha!

    I <3 Liza!

I have to admit, living in the US has kept me from getting to follow this show, but I've enjoyed reading the posts on it. Thanks for including some clips to let us see some of the performances. I especially loved the clip with Liza coaching the contestants. I'm a huge Liza fan and it was great to see her being so gracious and lovely with the women. I probably won't get the chance to see the show in the West End, but that Gwion sure is a cutie!

    I thought both Andrew and

I thought both Andrew and Cameron's comments were incredibly detrimental to Jessie, as they were both attempting to curry favour with the viewers. If you watch the closing credits you will see just how inconsolable Jessie was, with the blame lying squarely at Andrew's and Cameron's feet for buliding up this Jessie's hope, that she was a shoe in for the role of Nancy.

Unfortunately, for them both we voted for Jodie. If people are gonna pay upward of £65 for a ticket, they are gonna want to listen to a voice that has emotion, a rough diamond/heart of gold quality, and finally consistency.

Previous winners have had two things in common - consistently good and consistently improving.

i haven't been the biggest fan

of the show but the final was interesting, i wasn't paticularly rooting for either of the girls, i just didn't want sam to win as i felt she wasn't nancy! but i didn't really mind between jessie and jodie.

but i was pissed off when andrew lloyd webber and cameron mackintosh were slightly rude to her after she won, saying that they would've liked jessie. andrew lloyd webber organises these things and he knows perfectly well that the public vote for the winner so he has no right to complain publicly about who wins and make the winner feel less special for their amazign feat!

    I must admit that...

I'm not exactly happy with the outcome. Sure I think that Jodie is talented and has a nice voice but I found her over the top and frankly... boring. I really felt that Jessie could have provided a fresh take on Nancy but at the end of the day I do understand that with the amount of cash people fork out for theatre seats it would be much safer to have Jodie as she seems the more capable with her maturity...

I was shocked at Andrew and Cameron's comments though, especially Camerons! How unprofessional! He did look quite foolish though when it was Jodie who won.

I don't agree with you at

I don't agree with you at all about Jodie deserving to win - she's got a good voice and everything but I was quite often bored by her performances - I never was by Jessie's. To me she's a bit washed-up as well, way too old to play the Nancy that Cameron Mackintosh was looking for - a much more youthful and raw Nancy closer to the Dickens than the film. And Jessie's final performance completely surpassed Jodie's on emotion and memoribility - it sent shivers down my spine.

Still, better her than Sam "dead eyes".

    I had to comment as i can't

I had to comment as i can't believe how negative this was about Jessie! she has the je ne sais quoi quality that Jodie could never have. the duet being brilliant had everything to do with Jessie AND Gwion, not just Gwion. She was truly amazing in it - everything - her singing, movement, facial expressions, connection with Gwion. Distracted and over the top? i really didn't see it. i think it was one of the best performances of the whole series!

As for Jodie's with Laurence - OH DEAR! She looked so old compared and it just looked all wrong! Nancy should be a few years older than Oliver - not 20! and it was very boring and predictable.

I think that Cameron's and The Lord's comments were completely justified. The only reason why i'm ok with Jessie not getting the role is because I know she will get a bigger and better one! I can't wait!

I WAS going to get a ticket for this show - like i was nearly 100% going to go thinking it would be someone I would really look forward to..but unfortunately I'm not going to go anymore. I don't dislike Jodie, I just don't have any desire to see her perform. I didn't really think about it before..but i realised as soon as she won that I just wasn't interested in going, which is a pity.

I find it so interesting that we have such a difference of opinion. I'm so suprised that Jodie was seen by anyone as Nancy - never mind the majority. it really makes me wonder. she was talented, i'll give her that - but she couldn't touch Jessie if she tried - and I think she even knew that herself in the final seeing as her performances just merged into each other as one resounding piece of "blah".

oh man, i really could go on and on but i won't. one more thing: at 27 apparently Jodie has had struggles etc. what struggles? someone could be 18 and had more struggles. and i don't get it anyway - i thought they were acting?? i didn't realise we have to have gone through stuff in real life in order to act it - that's ridiculous!! also what are Jodie's "battle-scars"? and don't get me started on John and Denise! watch John on Jonathan Ross if you want to see what he's like. the whole "willy piano" story - just odd and tacky in my opinion.

    over and out.

    revalis's picture

Jessie might not have got it but...

I think Jodie is more likely to give the same-level of performance every night. She has a good voice, she interacts well with the kids and she's a good actress. Saying that though, Jessie was still my favourite and I am definately going to keep my eye on her, so when she gets a role in a musical I can go watch it and drool over her be absolutely amazed by her talent in person. And why do people dislike Sam so much? I personally enjoyed her performances and I think she will do well in the West End.

    Glad Jodie won!

I was happy that Jodie won. I was a huge fan of sam ( i mean have u seen her, shes hot) but i never really saw her as nancy but will happily go and see her in whatever show she ends up in. I couldn't stand Jessie, she was just so stiff and awkward in her performances and her answering back to the judges every week did my head in (just shut up and listen to the advice they are trying to give you). So out of the final 3 I was rooting for Jodie in the end. I was never a huge fan of her at the start of the series (loved Sarah), but she grew on me week after week and I thought she deserved to win. Now what am I going to do with my saturday nights?

    Truly Scrumptious...

    After Ellen..came me!!

I have to say that I would have been happy with either Jodie or Jessie becoming Nancy, but I think Jessie had the edge for me. The way she came back week after week following comments from John and Denise, such as 'You are so unfeminine..' and 'You bore me..' I think shows how gutsy and determined she is. Imagine hearing comments like that about yourself infront of 10 million viewers..heartbreaking.

I have no doubt that Jodie will be great as Nancy, and I hope to see her and Gwion together, but there is also no doubt in my mind that within the year Jessie will be starring in a nearby theatre, and I will be amongst the first in line.

Jessie and Gwion were fantastic together. Great chemistry. Along with Jessie's performance of Judy Garland's 'The man that got away', I think it was one of the performances of the series.

Good Luck, Jodie, and Jessie, you are going to be a star..

    BAM FOREVER..

Maybe I'm influenced too much by the novel but...

... the maternal side of Nancy is not that evident in her character for me. Sure she protects Oliver, but being protective is not necessarily the same as being motherly - an older sister would protect her younger brother too, and the way she acts, in the musical itself, at Fagin's strikes me as older sisterly. Remember she's an ex-pick pocket kid, and she sees the boys as her slightly younger counterparts... Like brothers and sisters following in her footsteps. She wants a different life for Oliver than she had for herself...

In the Novel, as was said, she is seventeen, and though the judges blustered through that by saying "life will have aged her" well, sure it gave her inner strength, but the interesting thing to me about the character is the dichotomy of her inner strength and extremely strong powerful character, and the outer frailty and youth which allows her to be so vulnerable to Bill Sykes. This vulnerability and commitment to love is surely the mark of a confused young girl, truly believing that this evil man, who actually ends up murdering her, is capable of love. This is a young and naive belief surely.

Moreover, Jodie couldn't sing particularly well, rather than lose her control though, she spoke the difficult parts. She did an admirable job, when it came to the truly difficult notes (not the loud belty ones the actually difficult ones) she made her voice intense and spoke them in rhythm.

It really bothered me, if you watch Luck Be a Lady, she did it all the time! With difficult rhythms, with everything hard to sing, she just spoke it to the music. That's a skill in its own right, but it's not the same skill as singing, and she needs to be able to sing!

    I didn't want Jodie to

I didn't want Jodie to win, Jessie's been my favourite since the beginning, but Jodie's still good and I'm happy she won as I guess it would be easier for Jessie to get other roles because she's younger.
    InfiniteRain's picture

    Way to go, Jodie!

Before the final I was a bit of a Sam fan, but it became clear immediately that she wouldn't be able to pull that big of a role off (yet). She's been way better in past shows and it was only fair that she got voted out first.

After that it was Jodie all the way! I was almost scared that Jessie would win.. I don't like her much. She's undoubtedly a good singer and she most probably will have a career, but she is SO not Nancy! She moves awkwardkly, she has huge problems with the Cockney accent, she tends to be bland and distracted... she's just a VERY young girl, who really didn't fit the part. I was annoyed at some of the judges favoritism, especially by Cameron's comments declaring Jessie the winner basically... his "apology" in the end didn't seem sincere at all.

I'm very, very happy that Jodie won! She's gonna make a fantastic Nancy and I might even go and see her when I maybe go to London next year. I'm sure it's gonna be fantastic =)

My dream winner would have been Rachel (<3), but Jodie is a very, very worthy winner and deserves this like whoa!

    Entertaining Bitter/Sweet Final

I have been slightly obsessed with Jessie since her outstanding performance of 'The Man That Got Away', in week 6. She has not been the most consistent but when you she is on form no one can come close. I don't know exactly what it is (I don't think I'd go so far as ALW and say it is a sacred flame!) but she certainly has something. Her last two performances on Saturday (The Man Who Got Away and As Long As He Needs Me) were goose bump inducing, lump in the throat fantastic. fantastic, fantastic- to paraphrase the increasingly annoying John Barrowman. (I usually like him but his blatant anti-Jessie stance did get a little tiresome)

Jessie was the best performer on the night but I think the public may have made the right choice. Jodie will be consistent and Jessie is still so so young. And I do think it is quite funny that Cameron and ALW's pro-Jessie stance probably got Jodie the job!

All 3 finalists will have fantastic careers, Nancy or not. However there will be a hole in my Saturday and Sunday night schedule, and yes I am missing Jessie's crooked smile already!

You want to make sure it's

You want to make sure it's Gwion's night before you for out your money, the other 2 lads are appalling!!  In fact I totally disagreed with the choices for Oliver, they made me cringe every week anyway, and then they pick possibly the worst 2 for the role!

As for Jodie and Jessie, I was in love with Jessie from the start, and I have to say that although she had a dodgy week or two in the middle she totally blew the other 2 away on Saturday night in both solo performances and her duet.  It really annoyed me that John suddenly took a major vendetta against her and ripped her apart every week for the last few weeks, after doing nothing but give her great praise for the first half of the series!  And of course she broke down, she's just a bairn after all!!

I like Jodie, and I think she will be great in the role, but I feel she was totally the safe option.  But I too will be watching out for Jessie in the future.

    Ally_aka_Renee's picture

    Jessie!

I was very disappointed to hear that Jodie had won. It was obvious that Jessie deserved it more. Her solo performance was amazing. Her duet was even better and it wasn't just Gwion who made that duet, she did as well!!! They had a great connection and seemed perfect as Oliver and Nancy. Also why she really deserved to win it is she put up with those two awful people who seemed to have a grudge on her, aka John and Denise. I don't know what their problem was but it seemed to me that for weeks they were bullying her i their unkind comments. Denise calling her unfeminine wasn't very nice but then again she isn't a very nice person. And John is just a fool. I'd use a stronger word if I could.

Yes Jodie was good but even her final performance proved she wasn't ready for this challenge. She was shaky and I think that shes the inconsistent one not Jessie as the two fools said. Seriosuly what was their problem with her?

Maybe I'm biased because Jessie is Irish but I believe she was the best for the part. Especially after seeing her with Gwion. Those drama schools that turned her down are probably regretting it now. As mentioned she had that something that you can't teach! Jessie rocked.

    geeness's picture

    biased, much?

i've never watched the show, but from what i've read of this article, it would seem like 2 were for jessie and 2 were for jodie.

you're saying these 'two fools' had a problem with jessie, but from the article it seems like the 'other two fools' had a problem with jodie.

i'm guessing if you were a fan of jodie, you'd be saying the exact same thing about the 'other two fools'. very biased indeed.

obviously the drama schools turned her down for a reason, and maybe the fact she didn't win, is proof of why the did, no?

you don't know denise or john, personally, so you can't say those things about them, i've never seen anything bad said about those two, you're judging people you don't even know.

in my eyes, you've got a bad case of sour grapes!

the picture of jodie on this page, is totally different to what i saw of her yesterday. she was on Loose Women (uk talk show) yesterday (3rd june) and she looked so much different (and better, not a great photo here) and she was so down to earth and nice.

from what she said on the show yesterday, she thought she was the underdog all the way through the programme, and was so surprised to go through every week, never mind winning it.

no one can judge her as nancy, until the show begins in january, a lot can happen in that time...

    Ally_aka_Renee's picture

    Reasons

There's reasons why I called them fools. If you havent watched the show then you dont really know what you're talking about. The others didnt have a problem with Jodie they just perferred Jessie it seemed from their comments. The reason I said they had a problem with Jessie is throughout the series, not just the final episode, they had been constantly picking on her, like Denise always called her unfeminine and there were other comments that weren't very nice hence why I said Denise wasn't a very nice person. Also when Jodie won they were very smug about it hence why I called John a fool. I may not know them personally but I judged on their actions on the show which lead me to think they were not very nice people.

As for me having sour grapes, possibly true and if you read my post you would see that I said I was biased. But I wanted Jodie to win (so I was a Jodie fan despite what you think) until the final show when I didn't think her performances were as good as Jessie.

    firefly2008's picture

    Pleased

I am pleased Jodie won, her and Jessie were my favourites so I didn't mind which one got the role. Jessie was so gorgeous and she sang ALAHNM so well, she will definitely get work :) Her accent is lovely too, and she is a lovely girl.

Sam was good, but I could never see her as Nancy.

    carmen_tm's picture

    Are you crazy?! Jessie

    Are you crazy?!

Jessie was clearly the best, both on the night and throughout the series!

Sure, she had a couple of bad weeks in the middle, but it was never nothing drastic!

And as for the 'over the top' vibe you keep commenting on, you need to be over the top on stage, otherwise emotion doesn't get across. This isn't TV, where you can have close ups on your face.

Jessie was fabulous. Jodie was great too but I think she would be awesome playing Mama Morton in Chicago.

    Anyone agree?
