Fan videos and female charactersI’ve often thought that there’s a Ph.D. thesis to be written on the overarching effect of the internet on the gay and lesbian community. On the one hand, there’s the fact that the net potentially exposes the gay user to homophobic hate groups spewing more bile than (hopefully) he or she encounters in the real world on the average day. On the other hand, there are communities like ... well, like AfterEllen.com, which mean that you no longer have to live in a big city or be a bar bunny to gain some sort of feeling of belonging to a lesbian community. And then there’s the phenomenon of the lesbian (or lesbianish) fan video. Fed up with searching for nonexistent out lesbian characters in TV and film, some people just get hold of a film editing program and create their own story lines and emphases out of the raw material provided by the networks.
Which means if I want to see a video that focuses on the subtexty bits between, say, Serena and Blair on Gossip Girl, then it doesn’t take me very long to find one: And a well-made one at that. Admittedly, there’s a bit more of Blair rolling around with various interchangeable boys than I need to see, but I think this video does a great job of capturing the fact that the most powerful emotional relationship on the show is really between the two girls. Which makes a nice change after all the shows — from Starsky and Hutch to Nip/Tuck — focused on male pairs who secretly seem to need each other more than they really need the inconsequential women who pass between them. Then there’s this video centered on Andie (Anne Hathaway) and Miranda (Meryl Streep) from The Devil Wears Prada: Ingenious, no? Especially the choice of Madonna’s "Frozen" for the song, which actually fits Miranda’s character perfectly. As lesbianish pairings go, there’s a rather huge age gap — if I’d been making a video, I probably would have tried to make it between Hathaway and Emily Blunt’s characters — but then, women of Hathaway’s age get cast opposite men of Streep’s age without a second thought in Hollywood. The “fresh-faced female ingenue meets powerful female boss” is certainly a new twist.
One pairing I always secretly wanted to see was Joey (Katie Holmes) and Jen (Michelle Williams) on Dawson’s Creek.
Perhaps because there was never really enough subtext in the original program to support that, I couldn’t find any lesbianish videos featuring them — but I did find this rather excellent, and funny, one that illustrates how the two of them envied and competed against each other in the early seasons of the show: This just reminds me of the thing I really loved about Dawson’s Creek, which was that it had not one but two smart, complex female leads, neither of whom could be slotted easily into the stereotypical characters of “the brain” or “the beauty.” I’ll admit my crush was mainly on Joey, but Michelle Williams is pretty much my pick for most talented young Hollywood actress. Which female TV and film pairings would you like to see get a lesbianish twist? Which relationships between female characters do you find interesting even if they don’t feature gay subtext? At this moment, I'm totally into Buffy/Faith. It's too bad I already know they're never gonna make out, but I'm watching season 3 right now and damn, there's SO much tension! I was watching an episode with commentary by the writer yesterday and even he was saying there was lesbian subtext. It's so hot. Their chemistry is unbelievable.
As for couples where there's not really a lot of subtext, I like Brennan/Angela from Bones. I mean, I love David Boreanaz, so I don't mind Brennan and him being all straight-couple-y, but her with Angela would be cuter. Just sayin'.
Edit - How could I forget Sara/Sofia from CSI?! Awesome chemistry, I'm still pissed Sara left before they hooked up. Damn you, Grissom.

Buffy and Faith together that would have been great wouahhh but effectively except for all these tensions and these some messages subjective as in the episode where Faith draws a heart with an arrow on one of the windows of the class where is Buffy... there will be never a relation between them snif snif.

You're totally right ! There is more chemistry between Buffy and Faith than betwenn Buffy and Riley... (yuk). There is so much subtext there... you just have to look at all the fanfictions that have been written (and well written). My hard drive is full of them. So yeah Fuffy is my first love !
Then I can always go for some Alex/Olivia from SVU. Got a lot of them too...
I just have to say Breyton, because Brooke and Peyton... why did they fight about Lucas anyway. And it doesn't hurt that they're all touchy-feelywith each other.
And after watching WMC, I have to say that I'd love to see Lindsay and Jill hooking up...
And Veronica/Mac...
Basically, blonde/brunette does it for me... lol. But when we're talking chemistry and subtext, all I think about is Fuffy !

I also like to think there is something more than friendship between Kirsten and Julie on The OC. And Lana and Chloe on Smallville (they were never jealous of each other, they were jealous of Clark!) And Addison and Callie on Grey's... hehe! I read lesbian subtext in everywhere though!!

I would love to see the subtext of Peyton and Brooke... beacuse there is sooo very much of it... :) My girlfriend who just started watching the show and has become hooked asked me this past week if I think they will hook up... I laughed and was like.. I WISH! :)

right now I'm jonesin' (wow, did I really just say that?) for some Zoe/Caitlin on 'Cashmere Mafia' - if it comes back. They seem to really care about each other the most, but maybe that's wishful thinking. It seems like Zoe and Juliet were made to be better friends, but I think that's just so Zoe's control freak tendencies could be put further on display, like I'm surprised Zoe wasn't in the first divorce proceedings btw Juliet and Davis too, lol, cause she set everything else up
I was so excited for this show, esp. when I found out one of the characters was going to be queer, but also because I just love women being romantic with each other and seeing that on TV, whether they're lovers or not. I'm a sucker for that old school mushy stuff, and the groundbreaking concept that women are friends with each other because they really do like/love each other and they're not just killing time together until some dude comes along, or friends because their boyfriends are, if they're straight or bi...
I totally saw the subext with Andy/Miranda...her bf, who she essentially leaves for Miranda even calls her on her 'relationship' with her boss. There's some EXCELLENT fanfiction out there for TDWP, astonishing in comparison to what else is typically out there.
During the first season 'Desperate Housewives' there was major vibage between Lynette (Felicity Huffman) and Bree (Marcia Cross)...but I think we all know how far down the drain that went...kinda like The L Word.
But I think my heart will always belong to a certain tough yet doe-eyed Detective and an icily beautiful blonde DA...*sigh*...love for the ages right there, yes ma'am.

Is there anything better
I've never been one for fanfiction, but the Cabenson stories were awesome! They were the greatest. I love Alex Cabot (Steph March) although she's a little old for me.
I don't think I've ever seen better chemistry between two characters who weren't actually dating.

At the time of Dawson's Creek, I would have wanted to see also a love relation between Joey and Jen. Oh and one of my the strongest wish that would have been to see Rachel and Monica in Friends go out together. OH MY GOD I hope that one day there will be a season special "Gay Friends" LOL :-)

well, I see possible lesbian couples everywhere, so you imagine how often I get frustrated! But my first passion for a TV character was 10 years ago, Teri Hatcher when she played Lois Lane. I loved her so muuuuch! I'm ok now!
But the friends that I enjoyed the most to become a couple were Jessie and Katie from Once and Again. It was such a well written and performed story.

There are so many awesome fandoms and pairings that this is impossible!
I've been really impressed with the Buffy/Faith videos (this one is fun: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XP8s0JOAN-g). Serena/Blair, Brooke/Peyton, Haley/Peyton, the South of Nowhere girls have lots of great vids (and the actresses apparently watch them from time to time, which is awesome). Recently, Elle/Claire (Heroes) has been popping up, and that has been exciting. So has Cameron/Sarah from Terminator: The Sarah Connnor Chronicles. All in all, there's a great amount of subtexty and not so subtexty relationships featured. One of THE best videos I ever saw was Willow/Tara. I'd like to see more videos with Gwen and other ladies from Torchwood.
I think some of my favorite videos are those that create an alternative universe (AU), creating another story for some of the main characters. There are a number in the Buffy/Angel universe. But I don't have any examples off-hand unfortunately.

Yah, personally I prefer Emily/Andrea myself, but there's like a hardcore Miranda/Andrea cadre on LJ pumping out the most amazing fic for them, which pretty much influences the fandom. As long as it's good, I'm seriously not complaining.
Other than that, I see subtext everywhere. I mean everywhere. I go to an all girls school, every day is like femslash central, lol. I have been quite looking forward to Elle/Claire (Heroes) fic lately, which is odd, considering the fact that I've seen a single episode of Heroes ever, but I like the fic. And I have the most awesome-est crack!fic pairing ever, which is Lorelai/Alex (Gilmore Girls/L&O:SVU Crossover) which shouldn't work, but strangely does. (wizened_cynic on lj and I srsly have to stop pimping her out to everyone and sundry.)
Also, Emily/JJ from Criminal Minds are like, love. Other than that, I'll read/watch pretty much whatever's going if it's good.

I think these are some of the best vids I have seen because there is simply so much to work with. That heart-on-the-window thing, and them dancing together? Priceless. Alex/Olivia comes a close second. I saw a good Sara/Sofia one once (CSI). I'm more of a fanfiction girl myself though, just because you can do so much more with that.
I don't even consider Xena/Gabrielle subtext by the end of the show. So I count them in with Willow/Tara, Spashley, Catilin/Alicia, etc.

I have to say it..... there is a "fan video" community ...not on youtube.. that is incredible. The quality of fan vids on youtube... is pretty terrible. If you like femslash vids I recommend the following. They are some of my very favorites.
