Emma Watson befriends an emperorWhen I first saw this headline, "Emma Watson replaces 'old' Johansson," my first thought was that I was about to get my feminist on in a major way. I mean, is this what we've come to in Hollywood? Scarlett Johansson, at the age of 23, is considered too old to star in a romance?
As it turns out, though, the casting change is at least a bit better justified than I originally thought. The film in which Watson is now set to star is called Napoleon and Betsy, and the role she will play is based on a real-life figure.
Lucia Elizabeth "Betsy" Balcombe was 13 or 14 years old in 1815 when the exiled French emperor Napoleon was brought to live on her father's estate on the British island of St. Helena. The girl and the captive emperor struck up a friendship that would last three years until 1818 when the Balcombes moved to Australia.
Betsy later wrote a memoir of her time with Napoleon, published in modern times as To Befriend an Emperor: Betsy Balcombe's Memoirs of Napoleon on St. Helena. There's also a novelization of the story for younger readers, by American writer Staton Rabin. What seems to have been added to the story for the film version, though, is an element of romance between Betsy and Napoleon. Since Napoleon, historically, would have been 46 when he first met Betsy, I'm assuming that they're going to update her age to about 18 or 19 (at least, I hope they are, because otherwise … ew. And even so … well, still kind of ew).
Of course, if Napoleon isn't "too old" at 46, you might ask why Johansson has to be considered "too old" at 23 if the story's going to be fictionalized anyway, but … well, that's Hollywood for you. The potentially creepy age thing aside, I have mixed feelings about the project. On the one hand, I do like period dramas, and I can see how the subject matter offers the chance to delve into the human side of a famous historical figure. On the other hand, I can't say I've ever been especially interested in Napoleon, and by focusing on the exiled period at the end of his life, it seems as if they will be missing the most dramatic parts of his story anyway. What do you think? Is this a good project for Emma Watson to help her break out of the Harry Potter mold and establish herself as an adult actress? Submitted by on April 21, 2008 - 9:00am. |

Did anyone else...
...have a problem with AE coming up as CMT earlier, o_O? It scared me a little.
I think historical drama is the way to go for Emma. Better than the Disney route that everyone else seems to be taking these days.
Haha. And if she wants to play a young beauty who's schtuping an old fart, that's her cross to bear.
...and all was well, and the world smiled.
fresh meat ...
is what Emma Watson is seemingly becoming ... she turns 18, and everyone seems to be going nuts!
This movie is definitely an "eww" factor for me ... and as for whether or not she can break out of the "Harry Potter" mold - that's up to her and her acting ability.
I'm a huge Emma Watson fan,
I'm a huge Emma Watson fan, she has completely blown me away with her acting chops in the Harry Potter films, especially the past two films.
I understand wanting to break away a little bit from Hermoine and this could be the way to do it. I think talent wise, yes she can pull it off but I don't see the movie being a "blockbuster". As for the role, I'll just wait and see what they do with it, considering Hollywood loves to change history as much as they possibly can. Napoleon could be 24 in their "adaptation".
I actually prefer her to playing the role then Scarlett. Not because I don't think she could pull it off but it depends on the age they are going to make the character. It doesn't make sense for Scarlett to play the role if they do make her 14 or 15-- I tire of seeing that in movies. --Let's see a 25 year old play a 17 year old. --It's not saying she's over the hill in Hollywood, it's saying that if she's in her 20's, play someone in your 20's.
I'm a Emma fan as I mentioned, so I'll probably go see it. Whether I like the film or not, I'll go for the support. I think she's has the ability to become an even better actress and has the chance to establish a long-running career.

Hollywood’s and the movie
Hollywood’s and the movie industry’s relationship with age(ing) (and women) is very disturbing. It is equally disturbing that all screen relationships must have some kind of sexual connection…
The age thing is particularly upsetting because there’s an obsession for the very young. This reminds me of a recent film, Love in the time of Cholera, an adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marques’ novel of the same name. It’s a story about a man who has to wait about 50 years until he can be with the woman he loves. Obviously the story develops during several decades, as the characters age. The male character is played by a younger and an older actor but the female character is always played by the same actress, from teenager to an old woman. The result is pathetic, it is impossible to believe the characters. They literally have a very young woman with fabricated wrinkles and grey hair that looks ludicrous. All this because they obviously couldn’t cast an older actress because, after all, who would REALLY love an older woman? *sigh* The whole thing was scary….
Why do people feel the
Why do people feel the constant need to sex up historical figures?
Napoleon is one of my (history-major) heroes... And there's so much in his story (even this little bit of it) that it doesn't need all this superflouousness.
Any word on who's playing him?
Has anyone ever read
Better without the sex
Ugh, well done Hollywood, well done for taking a fascinating and all the more intriguing story for tis real life historical significance and making it into a tired and much too oft used storyline of an older man falling in love with a younger woman. oh by the way, SARCASM ALERT!
This story would have been fascinating, to see such a powerful man such as Napoleon after his hayday, dealing with his exile and his fall from grace, and seeing how the presence of a young girl perhaps might rejuvinate him, or perhaps give us insight into his psyche, and how her moving away eventually to start her own life just as his was drawing to a close and seeing how this would have affected him. Not to mention how such a friendship might shape a young woman, now that would have been a fascinating movie. It's soooo unfortunate it's not going to get made that way.
I would have gone to see this movie if they had actually stuck with the interesting aspects, but no they picked the winning concept of creepy age difference romance. Again, bravo Hollywood.
Well...
I'm not surprised, it is Hollywood afterall. Gotta sex it up to create some intrigue! Studios have such little faith in moviegoers these days.
I'm interested to see how Emma takes this on, I think it's a good chance to show off her acting chops.
