Can Natalie Portman reach ‘Wuthering Heights’?A new film adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel Wuthering Heights is in the works. John Maybury — who helms upcoming lesbianish film The Edge of Love and is openly gay — is attached to direct, and Natalie Portman is attached to star as Catherine Earnshaw. According to IMDb.com, the project is tentatively scheduled for release in 2010.
This isn’t the first adaptation of the novel. Probably the most famous version is the 1939 film, starring Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. Fans of the BBC’s recent drama Mistresses might be interested to know that Oberon — who hid her Indian heritage to ‘pass’ as white in the racist Hollywood of the 1930s — is actually the great-aunt of Shelley Conn (below, left) who starred in Mistresses as the bisexual Jessica, and also played the leading lesbian in Nina's Heavenly Delights (out this week on DVD in the U.S.).
There’s also the 1992 film that starred Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche — along with the now openly lesbian British actress Sophie Ward as Isabella Linton.
IMDb.com tells me there was even an updated, Americanized musical version in 2003, starring Erika Christensen as “Cate” and Mike Vogel as “Heath”. Thankfully (I suspect), I haven’t seen the Christensen version. But in my opinion both the Oberon and Binoche adaptations leave room for improvement. While the Oberon version is atmospheric, it focuses solely on Heathcliff and Cathy’s tragic romance – leaving out the story of the next generation and how they have to try and repair the damage that Heathcliff and Cathy have done. This reinforces what I think is a popular tendency when it comes to Wuthering Heights: to view it as if it was just a bodice-bursting romance – Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy gone bad – rather than a violent, disturbing story about cycles of abuse. Even when it comes to Heathcliff and Cathy’s romance, filmmakers often seem to ignore some of the interesting aspects of their relationship. Emily Brontë had a family nickname of “The Major”, and in the novel Wuthering Heights Cathy says of her lover that “he’s more myself than I am […] I am Heathcliff!” The idea of a masculine or androgynous Catherine – along with the idea that Heathcliff might partly have been a projection of Emily Brontë’s own personality, and thus have an androgynous side himself – never quite seems to make it into a film version. With all this in mind, I have mixed feelings about the casting of Portman as Catherine Earnshaw. She’s certainly a better choice than Keira Knightley, who was one of the names originally bandied about for the role. And she’s possibly better than Lindsay Lohan, who was also mentioned (though I actually think that Lindsay could have played the spoilt, wilful aspect of Catherine’s character rather well). I haven’t seen a lot of Portman’s work, but the impression I have of her is of someone very bright, earnest, articulate and responsible. While I’m thankful that she’s not bringing a whole lot of tabloid baggage to the project, I do wonder if she has the passion and spirit to play Cathy. (I also wonder about her Yorkshire accent… but then that would be an issue for Lohan and Knightley as well). What do you think? Are you a fan of Wuthering Heights? Who would your ideal Catherine be? I'm not much of a Bronte fan...
and I've never liked Wuthering Heights, but Lindsay Lohan as Catherine? Come on, browne! tell me you're joking! :) Generally the Bronte sisters wrote dark depressing books, and looking back Jane Eyre isn't the masterpiece I thought it was when I first read it in my early teens. The first few pages of Wuthering Heights scared the bejeezus out of me back then too.
Natalie Portman seems to get picked up for all these type of Englishy things, what with her bad-accented Queen Amidala (sorry, I'm a major star wars fan) and that other boleyn girl movie thing, whatever it's called. I can't really see her as Catherine, but she was pretty darn good in Closer in the stripper character we thought she'd never play, so you never know. I just sort of wish they'd get English actresses to do these things - Anne hathaway was pretty, but kind of horrendous and almost sacreligious as Jane Austen in Becoming Jane (and yes, major jane austen fan too). Gorgeous lips she has, but that accent made me want to cover my ears and run screaming out of the theatre. More than anything in a movie, I HATE bad accents.
Right there with you ...
...... Miss Chatelaine (Which is, perhaps, no surprise) on the bad English accent catastrophe that is Natalie Portman.
Now. The only movie *I* can stand Natalie in, is V for Vendetta (puts on my flame-retardant suit of armor)... I think she's one of the more over-rated actresses out there (and there are so many!)
But despite my dislike of Natalie ... I don't quite understand WHY they're remaking Wuthering Heights in the first place ... especially since it's been done so many times (much like Pride and Prejudice) ...
Let's do a movie version of a Hardy novel ...
Hey! Emma Thompson is going to be in a remake of Brideshead Revisited! That's cause to celebrate in my little world ...
xo
Wuthering Heights
Wuthering Heights is my
Wuthering Heights is my favourite book (and also one of my favourite songs, but that is beside the point).
miss chatelaine, I think you misjudge the Lohan, as much as she is messed up there is no denying the girl can act! And I, in someways, could see her as Cathy, however I have to say no.
I say no to Portman too, not that I don't love her, but mainly because, why the hell can't we have Brits played by (oh my god) BRITS!! (But not Keira Knightley.) I actually don't kno who I would ideally like to see as Cathy, but there are some extremely talented British actresses around. What about Sally Hawkins? She can do rough and tomboyish.
I totally agree that it is the intensity and wild nature of Heathcliff and Cathy's relationship (in a non romantic sense) that makes the book what it is. Cathy is a fiercely strong character and it is important to show that.
oh all right, LiLo can act :)
erm, I liked Mean Girls. and The Parent Trap. But honestly, if I saw her in a film adaptation of any Bronte book I'd probably die of shock and horror - unless it was an Scary-Movie-type-thing. The last picture of Miss LiLo I saw was of her passed out at the back of a car after a night of wild partying. I wouldn't be able to take the film seriously. After I Know Who Killed Me, the naked crotch shots and the frequent drunken partying, I just can't see her as an actress anymore.
I love Natalie Portman but I
British actresses who could play Catherine
Jodhi May, Emily Blunt, Olivia Hallinan, Jemima Rooper or maybe Rachel Stirling
Emily Blunt
Oh I forgot Jodhi
Emily Blunt
Excellent choice!...Nonono to Portman (WTF?)
Yesyesyes to Emily!!

Arrr, let's goooooo...
I actually think that Keira
I actually think that Keira Knightley would be a fantastic choice to play Cathy. In my opinion, she can do absolutely anything -- she's an amazing and talented actress. I never thought she would sell me on her ability to play Lizzie Bennett, and she completely stole my heart.
Maybe Kate Winslet could dye her hair? She's certainly passionate enough, and no one doubts her abilities as an actress.
I don't know about Keira...
She talks through her teeth. It's this weird chin jutted out way of talking...maybe it's just me but I've found I can't watch her.
Woo hoo Natalie Portman would definitely be great.
Wuthering Heights
My favourite version (British, of course): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9v3C08oLqA

I am a huge Bronte fan
