They had me at "aerial dance troupe": The Gymnast hits NYC

by bad machine

If you're lucky enough to live in a city that offers gay and lesbian film festivals, screenings and events, perhaps you've seen or heard about a film called The Gymnast, starring Everything Relative co-star Dreya Weber. I just happened to read the synopsis of the film in this month's newsletter from NewFest, a New York City-based LGBT film organization. Here's what The Gymnast is about:

Dazzling and sexy, this high-flying drama chronicles the journey two women take to grow and to find new found strength together. Jane, a 43-year-old masseuse, was once an Olympic gymnast until an accident forced her early retirement. Unhappily married, she is drawn back to the gym where she meets gymnastics instructor Nicole and her gorgeous student Serena, a 28-year-old lesbian. Together they form an aerial dance troupe. While training for an audition in Las Vegas, Jane develops an undeniable attraction to Serena, putting both women's commitment to their work to the test, and forcing them to make hard decisions.

I don't know why the plot summary made me laugh, but it did. Perhaps it was the vision of the masseuse, deformed by her accident, unhappily massaging people (with her good hand) all day while dreaming about hot aerial artists.

(Click "read more" to continue.)

Then, having realized her dream of reentering the demanding world of gymnastics, said masseuse goes to Vegas, where my mind turns the whole film into a trapeze version of Showgirls.

I imagine the part where both women's commitment to their work is put to the test and they're forced to make hard decisions involves a love triangle made up of the masseuse, the instructor and the student -- which ends tragically when the masseuse wantonly chooses to not catch her rival during the big finale.

I should so be writing a lesbian film. Ninety percent of them suck out loud, quite frankly. Got a good lesbian film plot of your own? Let's take a meeting.

The Gymnast is over a year old already - saw it in Philly

i agree that most of the movie was enjoyable and the gymnastic scenes were mesmerzing but the coming out story was so not original and tiresome.

bad machine - the reason most lesbian films suck is because the people with the little bit of money available don't know what's a good film. you'd think here! and Logo would have better ideas of what makes a film great, but that's obviously not the case by the crap they've been responsible for putting out.

    Showgirls on the Trapeze

That was hysterical! A trapeze 'Showgirls', gosh, that makes me chuckle. And yes, of course I have an idea for a lesbian movie. A hot sexy lesbian runs an antique/curiosity shop and is bitten by a mutant hybrid scorpion that crawls out of the eye socket of a recent acquisition for the shop. Soon she loses the ability to connect to the present and instead interacts only with a distant dystopic future, where she falls in love with an insane asylum escapee. Together they set out to topple the authoritarian government and ultimately sink the world into utter chaos. It's a love story.

    Scorpions and insane asylums...

I would so see that movie.

Can I audition for for the part of the insane asylum escapee?

I think I'd be perfect to play the insane asylum escapee and I'm sure I'm just as good of an actress as the relatives and friends of the director's of the stinky, suck-out-loud lesbian movies.  I want to sink the world into utter chaos.  Love it!

    Where women can be strong

I'm a fan of any movie that actually allows women to have muscles and be physically capable.  I'm dying to see this movie.  Tired cliches and all.

    Casting

Not so fast, smartypants. I'm thinking we need REALLY old people. Why not have an octogenarian as the protago-chick? Yeah, old people, so that them having all the sex freaks people out. I know that I'm sickened. So it must work on some level.

    A Better Description

For what it's worth, here's how THE GYMNAST was described at the Cleveland International Film Festival:

"Forty-three is ancient for a gymnast, and Jane Hawkins, whose fall off the balance beam blew her Olympic Gold, believes she's a "withered husk". Caught in a failing marriage, with the heartache of never having a baby, Jane does what she can to keep her body in shape—her physique is athletically awe-inspiring. But she is dead inside...until she begins to train as an aerialist a la Cirque du Soleil, and meets Serena, a gorgeous, enigmatic Korean dancer. Writer/director Ned Farr has created an unusual narrative whose themes symbolically play themselves out in the sensuous folds of fabric the aerialists work with. A love story, a coming out tale, a mid-life crisis, and a portrayal of personal redemption, THE GYMNAST is all the more intriguing because lead actress Dreya Weber (LOVELY AND AMAZING) does all her own aerial work and choreography. The script is spare, and also spares us any trite drama of confronting the parents or ending a marriage. The aerial scenes, full of sexy positions amid feats of strength, beautifully portray the film's emotions."

    Peace.

    Loved the movie

I loved the movie. It was lovely to watch. The coming out story was not all that original but for a lesbian movie this was practically Citizen Kane.

    OK,

I have lots of movie ideas but alas I have no money to make them and I am no director. I have decided to write lesbian novels because a lot of those suck as well. So anyone who is a director or has lots of money burning a hole in there pocket I have ideas.

I can see it now After Ellen productions.

    Let me second (no, third?)

Let me second (no, third?) the posters who praised this film. It is one of the most wonderful lesbian movies I have seen in a very long time. Great chemistry between the two leads, absolutely breathtaking aerial choreography, and while the story is not exactly new, the subtlety is in the details, the focus on perfecting the body in place of perfecting the heart. Seriously, do NOT skip this film!

    Excellent)))

I would love to see the movie but am not sure how to get the DVD. Well, it must not be so difficult to find. The story is great because it is credible and insists as I understand on the dynamics of lesbian love. It is not only bed and breakfast style and again "give me kisses and more".

I would presume that you could, Badmachine, try to sketch out a good scenario out of your trips, travel experiences and cultural counterpoints, which would show a challenge as in "The Gymnast".)))
