Susan Sarandon has lovely bones

Last week, it was announced that Oscar-winning actress, human rights activist and AfterEllen.com Hot 100 lister Susan Sarandon will play the role of Grandma Lynn in the film adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel The Lovely Bones. And what lovely bones they are.

The Lovely Bones tells the story of 14-year-old Susie, who, after being murdered by her neighbor, watches from heaven as her family deals with her death. Newcomer Saoirse Ronan will play Susie, with Ryan Gosling and Oscar winner Rachel Weisz as Susie's grief-stricken parents. Sarandon will play Susie's grandmother, who moves in with the family after the murder.

The Lovely Bones will be directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings trilogy), who also directed Heavenly Creatures, the creepy 1994 film based on a notorious 1954 New Zealand murder committed by two teenage girls. The girls, Pauline (Melanie Lynskey) and Juliet (a young Kate Winslet), kill Pauline's mother when they learn she intends to separate them because their friendship seems just a tad obsessive. Guess she was right.

Back to Susan. I don't necessarily have a thing for older women, but if I did, Susan Sarandon would be my dream girl, er, woman. While others were all abuzz about Tim Curry's turn as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, I was watching Susan's performance as Janet, the newly-engaged priss who just needed a little coaxing to bring out her inner vixen.

And then came The Hunger. Oh my. No wonder she made Karman's Top 10 Lesbian Movie Kisses. The special effects in The Hunger don't hold up well 25 years after the fact, but that kiss with Catherine Deneuve in the seduction scene is timeless.

Sarandon puts her signature take-no-crap attitude and natural sex appeal into every role she plays, and that's what I love about her. OK, maybe there wasn't a lot of heat under Sister Helen Prejean's habit in Dead Man Walking, but no one rocks a bandanna like Louise.

The Lovely Bones is just another vehicle for showcasing Sarandon's talent and her lovely bones.

Here's Susan showing off two of my Top Four Girl Bones: Ankle, Cheek, Collar, Funny.

    Yay for Grandma Lynn!

I loved her character in the book!!  She brought much needed lightness, humour, and sass ... Oh, her drinking, her makeovers, her avoidance of housework, and her down-to-earth taking over of the family ...

I can see Sarandon playing a BRILLIANT Grandma Lynn.

    Ms. Sarandon so rocks.

Ms. Sarandon so rocks.  She’ll be wonderful in this part, as she has been in all the others.  She even made “Little Women” bearable.  Well, her and Claire Danes.  Thanks for article.

I totally agree with your Top Four Girl Bones too badmachine!  But I do have to add the clavicle as one of my fav’s.  Especially on her. Okay, on all women.  After a workout. Or  after a shower.

    I'll stop already....jeepers.

    Isn't Ryan a bit young?

to be playing the father of a 14 year old daughter? What is he: mid 20's? WTF!?

Susan Sarandon, the other hand...hmmm, she's eminently watchable :), at whatever age!

i read the article and was thinking, "Isn't she a little young to be playing someone's grandmother?"

then I realized she's technically old enough to be my grandmother. god it's weird to be seventeen and suddenly feel old.

but anywho, susan is lovely and will always be lovely and i can't wait to see her in this movie!

    Awesome cast!

Susan Sarandon - Ryan Gosling - Rachel Weisz - Peter Jackson.

    I'm sold!

Ryan Gosling and Rachel Weisz are two of my favorites. If all you've seen Gosling in is The Notebook, rent The Believer, he was amazing!
