I have a string of lights around my heartI don't know where I've been, but I just read that one of my favorite lesbian films, Desert Hearts, is coming out with a "Two-Disc Vintage Collection" on June 5, 2007.
The new release will contain never-before-seen footage of one of the best love scenes ever captured on film, new commentary by lesbian director Donna Deitch, and new interviews with Deitch and stars Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau. Desert Hearts is the classic, top-grossing film of all-time that's for lesbians, by lesbians, about lesbians, and based on a book by — guess what? — a lesbian (Desert of the Heart by Jane Rule.) Top that.
At the end of the movie (and what a great ending it is — not only does no one die or end up miserable, but a happy ending is also strongly implied, if not blatantly depicted), those crazy-in-love kids Vivian and Cay head east together. I'm waiting for the sequel showing Vivian and Cay back in New York City, where their love is tested when they meet some of Vivian's "college type" friends or something. I don't know. Is a sequel a good idea, or should we not mess with perfection? Submitted by on April 20, 2007 - 10:00am. |

Sequel...hmmmm...at this point?
Sequel....
Figures...
*snort*
I did exactly the same! Got DH a few months back, and Serenity when it was first released. Oh well.
As for a sequel, since Jane Rule didn't write one, why should the movie have one?
Actually, I could wish for a version of DH that was closer to the book, without the name changes, without Patricia Charbonneau (ok, I had the hots for her when I was 18... but now I realise she wouldn't have been right for the character in the book), Silver and "Cay's" relationship made more explicit, and without so much of that hooooorible music, somewhat over-the-top sentimentality, and draaahma about "Cay's" sexuality. Mind you, Helen Shaver is just perfection.
Great news!
I can't wait to see the DVD extras! Strangely, I was just watching part of this last night. I had just seen a highly touted lesbian sex scene that did not impress me much and was thinking how much better DH is than most lesbian movies today. How exciting that there are new scenes, commentary, etc.
I must get
It is also a fav or mine for all the reasons you stated and this set is on my list of must haves.
I would be remiss if I did not mention Patricia's short shorts and boots:)
ha ha
becky c., i second your last comment -- but still, those high-waisted pants and shorts that they wear make me wince! ;)
and that corny line about a string of lights always cracks me up. talk about cheese! damned eighties.

It's Strange
Not the movie, of course, nothing about it. It was the first film I saw where I though 'I'm Gay' (Because Helen Shaver? Who would say no?) And to be honest, I ALWAYS thought there was a sequel. I remember doing numerous searches on Amazon periodically and was bitterly disappointed when I never found a written one, knowing there'd not be a movie one. I would have loved to have seen the relationship developed, because I don't really think (sorry!) that the movie ending strongly directed the end towards a happy ending. Granted, no-one died, but I can't quite believe they ended up together, with Viv heading back to... Mind Blank... and Cay staying in LV. I got the impression that although Viv's time was a 'one off' with Cay, it would open the doors for future relationship/s with other women. Like, Cay was her first, and would always be special, but there *would* be others.
Sorry, went on quite a while there!
Vivian went back to New York
Vivian went back to New York where she taught English Lit. at Columbia University. My geekness knows no bounds :)
vivian
The one that counts!
I loooooove this movie. I remember watching it in college and thinking "I am soooooo gay!" I have this movie on tape, DVD and I sure as heck will buy it when it comes out again.
Keeping it in the family
If I remember correctly, Helen Shaver was in the first and/or second season of the L Word...she played right-wing bigot to Bette's risqué art exhibit.
It's possible I made that up in my mind. But I think it's right.
faye buckley!
no, you're totally right! she was aged by about fifteen years, but that was definitely helen shaver.

Helen Shaver
I think she went into television more, she was in a supernatural series, but I can't remember the name of it, and she did more work directing.
I love this film, and clearly remember seeing it on tv for the first time. I had a different career back then, and was the first woman employed by this team of 'professionals' (all calling each other old boy, you know the type). Anyway, the morning after it premiered in the UK, these 'old boys' spent hours spouting about how disgusted they were that something like that could be shown on national television. Did they change channels during the broadcast? Hell no!
It's got a number of good quotes in it, but I can't choose between these two favourites of mine:
"It'll be a cold day in August before I take in another educated type."
"How you get all that traffic with no equipment is beyond me."
Sequel? Hmm, no, don't think I could watch it. Remake? Maybe.
Except ...
How could I forget this one:
"My only clear memory is arriving, the rest is a blur, an absolute blur."
good memory!
someone sure has watched the movie more than a couple of times. LOL
those are definitely the best quotes from the film. seeing them written here brought a smile to my face. good call!

As someone else said, Helen
As someone else said, Helen Shaver has become a really successful television director and she has done some work as a producer as well. If I recall correctly, she was heavily involved in the series Judging Amy as both a director and a producer. She doesn't act much anymore, though I did see her this year in a couple episodes of The 4400.
Helen Shaver
She was a heart throb of mine for years after "Desert Hearts" came out. Yes, I saw it when it first came out. In a theatre... ; ) I actually interviewed both she and Donna Dietch, the director, for the Provincetown Advocate, and they were both interesting and very gracious. Helen was particular cool about playing a lesbian, even though lesbian love stories were seen very little at that time. She had appeared in a "gay" movie before that, "Outrageous," which was a Canadian film. I think she had a lot of guts to be in this part, which was really quite explicit then. Other movies I saw her in - she was in "Tremors," with Kevin Bacon, I believe - or the sequel, I'm not sure.
Aftershocks
ah desert hearts
i just replaced my stolen vhs copy w/ the dvd version.. of course now there's a 2 disc set available .
every day i have a memory of a line from this movie.. very well written.. i was 19 when it arrived in the theater where i was the asst. mgr.
no one knew i was lesbian so i had to try not to let them see me sneaking into the theater everyday just to catch yet another glimpse of the only 2 women i'd seen on film together at that time.
i was madly in love w/ a straight woman at the time and thank goodness for movies that could help me escape that reality :)
New DVD, Cool!!
Can't wait to see the new DVD of this flick! Already have my copy on order.
This movie holds a special place for me, as it came out about a year before my first experience with a lady. I didn't see it when it was released, but heard about it and knew what it was about. After my "first", I still didn't think I was gay; thought it's 'just her', blah, blah, blah, you know, the usual crap many of us think when we make this discovery about ourselves as adults after having no inkling growing up. So as a test, I rented DH, just to see what kind of reaction I'd have to it. Well, my reaction was being immensely turned on by watching those two beautiful babes go at it, and I remember so clearly thinking, as the credits were rolling, 'Well, I'm definitely gay!'
Ah, memories!
Since then, I've seen the movie at least once or twice, like so many dykes. Now there's word there may be a sequel...interesting!
...And while we're remembering lines, "You're certainly making a unique contribution..."
Sequel
All I know is, is that Donna D. better not mess up our vision of Cay and Viv. If they go off to NYC and have all the DRAMA we Les usually have in our lives..I will be sad. I want them two to make it!
I got my own DRAMA, I want someone to be happy for once and make it last FOREVER!
Ya heard me Donna D! If need be I'll come to LA help you write it! LOL
