Drew Barrymore and the bitchin', totally tubular '80s

If you remember Members Only jackets, big hair and the musical stylings of the Cars, A Flock of Seagulls, and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, you'll appreciate this. Drew Barrymore threw friend and production partner Nancy Juvonen an '80s-themed birthday party at her house last week.

Sounds like it was more fun than a can of Diet Coke and a mouthful of Pop Rocks.

Guests were treated to prom-style photos upon their arrival. Here, Courtney Love shows off her prom finery, complete with the most important accessory: a date in a powder-blue tux and white bucks.

Jimmy Fallon, Ricki Lake, and D-Lister Kathy Griffin were among the guests who were treated to a loop of the Molly Ringwald classic Sixteen Candles, plus lots of '80s hair band music.

The decade that brought us The Cosby Show, parachute pants, Care Bears and the aforementioned hair bands also gave us a whole new wave of girl bands, some of which broke new ground by actually playing their own instruments. Here's an abbreviated list of some of my favorites of the time:

The Go-Go's
Only later did we learn of the debauchery these girls were engaging in while on tour. My heroes.

Bananarama
Try getting the song "Venus" out of your head. Just try.

Laura Branigan
The hottest power singer of the decade, Branigan's hit "Gloria" was played ad nauseam in every gay club in America.

Cyndi Lauper
Baby-faced and glammed out, the future was so bright, she had to wear shades.

Madonna
The former Alvin Ailey dancer and original Material Girl had teenage girls all over the globe wearing lace tank tops, fishnet and crosses. Take that, Britney.

And for no reason whatsoever, here's Kristy McNichol sporting some '80s hair.

Feel free to add your own rich memories of great 80s girl singers and bands. Juice Newton, anyone?

    Pat Benetar, Joan Jett and

Pat Benetar, Joan Jett and Blondie.  Goddesses of 80's rock and roll.  Or was that the late 70's?  I don't know..it's all a blur. Too much big hair on the brain...

I SOOOOOO disliked and still dislike Flock of Seagulls

Horrid...awful.... The only good things about the 80's: graduating from HS and college, the arrival of Melissa Etheridge, the Indigo Girls, etc. and straight leg boot cut jeans...lol

    C'mon AfterEllen

I hate to bring it back to this, but how about a little diversity? How can you talk about the '80s without mentioning Janet Jackson-The Control Era, Irene Cara-Flashdance craze (thank you Jennifer Beals), the Pointer Sisters and the great Diana Ross ruling the airwaves for another decade??

    Please DO NOT forget Janet!

But let's sweep her brother Michael under the carpet. He gives me a serious case of the ick.

    High School reunion

All this is just warming me up for my 20th high school reunion this fall.  I'll have to bring Drew Barymore (the love of my life) as my date and have her pick out all the music.  When I arrive dressed as Pat Benetar and  Drew on my arm I guess my class will know which way I went after high school.  lol

Maybe I'll bring my old 20 lb roller skates and skate around the dance floor to I Love Rock and Roll.     Ahhhh...nothing like a bad flash back.

Speaking of that I just saw

Speaking of that I just saw a Cyndi Lauper concert recently (last year) and she's awesome!,  she sang so many great songs I never heard before, and her singing voice really blew me away!, she's great! but  for some reason she never gets the publicity she deserves.

Hated the 80's, but like the music now-

Hated the eighties then-  they were so brutal and pretentious-  lived in LA and saw the shameful throngs of homeless people digging through the garbage bins that were then locked up- And everyone turning a blind eye to it, and selling out to the elitist mentality- You couldn't pee in any place public without a quarter-  That one moment in the Stray Cats video said it all to me- "Gotta let off a little steam" when fat guys back from Nam with keys to the city started pushing everybody else around.

CEO's and the first $50,000 cars- John Lennons "Clean up time" he didn't live through

    Wrote this about '87:

    We've trashed the 80's

    Look at what we've got

Where are the love songs and the feelings mellow?

You did it, you did it

    Now you've got garbage art

Traded the feelings for shiney cars

    and an almighty power trip

    They shot us down,

    yeah, they shot us down

Finacial bureaucrats dealing in quotas of pain

    And their never-ending manipulations

Oh, you mean not everyone's happy?

We don't talk about our workforce much these days

    They're all be corrected

    by the financially enlightened

Oh well- I get sentimental if I hear "Come on Eileen" these days.  Wasn't Drew Barrymore about maybe 14 by the END of the 80's?  I like her, but outside of E.T. she's not that much of an 80's figure-  I think of the Brat Pack-  You know, Dino and Frankie and Sammy and Shirley...

    Peace

    Capice?Capice?

    the other 80s

i don't know - the 80s were hard core for me. I wasn't watching tv at all at the time so all that Full House and Breakfast Club schlock passed me by. I was all about Siouxsie and the Banshies, the Cure, Echo and the Bunnymen, Dead Kennedys, DOA, Gang of Four, the Slits, etc. Yeah, the 80s was also a coked up, commercial and crass. But a few of us didn't even notice...

    Oui got it!

Yeah- The Go-go's!  We got the beat!  Yeah, Oui got it!

Me and and Sargent O'Leary:  We're Friends, we're Friends...

That weird Al song is so right on- yes, some of us still remember WHEN music was on MTV-

Oh well- still got twenty=something NFL feeds every hypocritical Christian sabbath day. and those GREAT team spirit smells, at every high school across this spirited nation on every Jewish sabbath night-  and don't we just LOVE fighting for the people we otherwise show no mercy anyway!

Yay Rah!  Let's hold a prayer vigil and sacrifice abortion clinic people around the flag pole!
