"Original Plumbing" magazine shows off FTM culture

Lesbians used to have On Our Backs and gay men have Butt. Now, Original Plumbing, a “quarterly photo and interview-saturated magazine dedicated to the culture and sexuality of FTM transsexuals” is the new Playboy for the genderqueer generation. Sure, there’s all kinds of hot naked spreads, but you actually can genuinely say you read it for the articles with a “straight” face.

Just a warning, the website (linked above) features many NSFW photos.

The inaugural “bedroom issue” has just been released, and is already on independent bookstore shelves. Release parties continue to soldier on, including stops in Brooklyn, San Francisco and Seattle.

So, does OP live up to the hype?

In short, yes. It being the very first of its kind of outwardly celebrate FTM bodies in an overtly sexual manner, in color, and it couldn’t really go wrong. The introductory theme is appropriately intimate and interesting and the first five models are appropriately diverse and sultry.

The 12 article magazine contains a satisfactory collection of personal narrative, socio-political healthcare commentary, erotic short story and even some investigative sex journalism. The portraits are sexy, goofy, and most certainly not airbrushed in the unnatural and decidedly unappealing manner of mainstream ideals of beauty ala Ralph Lauren.

However, OP does take some missteps. Co-creator Rocco Kayiatos, also known as hip-hop artist Katastrophe takes center stage. His ultra-steamy photoshoot and well thought out interview deserve this spot as centerfold. Indeed, he would have been a much preferable cover model. I can only assume the editors did not choose this route in order not too appear too self-promoting or arrogant, but it was a mistake.

Cover boy Cyd Nova, while certainly a fascinating character, comes off as vapid and immature in his interview by Amos Mac. This is especially unfortunate appearing near the beginning of the magazine, when a narrative story by Cyd himself shows his true dynamism and thought-provoking prose. Writer Amos Mac also redeems himself in later interviews, so both have the potential to be fine reads, if only this initial story had been shuffled to the back.

Winter’s hair issue, for bears, silky smooth boys and everything in between, should be an even queerer investigation into what makes aspects of sex and gender erotic to various individuals. It should certainly have plenty of room for an array of aesthetically varied shots.

I am also hoping that leaping out of the personal realm of the bedroom might give Original Plumbing room to explore group shoots. Whether the FTMs engage with other trans folks or cis-gendered men and women surely coupling will add a unique dimension that OP could use. FTM sexuality most certainly does not exist in a vacuum.

This caught my eye at my local queer bookstore a couple of weeks back. I have to agree with your assessment and I truly hope it grows into something bigger and better. But again, we all have to begin somewhere and I'm sure the publishers are already looking at what worked well with this issue and what didn't.

I gave OP a shout-out in the thread about FTM websites (for any of our FTM brothers, lovers and allies who may have missed it, go here: http://www.afterellen.com/node/60556?#comment-1000441).

I am so very happy that AE gave this publication a shout-out and even put this write-up on the main page! For anyone reading this, please pass this info on to any trans friends, family members, co-workers or allies to help make this publication a success (and so FTM folks can have a damn resource, for once)!

Thank you for supporting our FTM brothers, AE!

That's sexy and cool and awesome and all kinds of stuff. It's exciting to not only see publications liek this, but support from the rest of the LGBT community for it. :)

I was in San Francisco this

I was in San Francisco this weekend and I spent a lot of time in independent bookstores.  I saw OP all over the place, and now I wish I'd picked it up and taken a look.

One word: AWESOME

I loves me some transguys and this magazine looks awesome. Will definitely have to check it out, especially since I've traded messages with at least one of the featured models, teehee.

I'll have to tell my ex about it, he's trans and super hot so, who knows, he might be able to model for them. He'll for sure be interested in checking it out.

I love the idea of a mag explicitly dedicated to honoring and highlighting trans masculinity. Awesome.

This is great!

I've always noticed that AfterElton features a lot of MtFs, but over here there's less attention on FtMs and female masculinity - probably because it's more difficult to find things about them. I would LOVE to have a subscription but... you know, half way round the world, conservative country and all that. Maybe, Alley, you could keep us updated about this? :)

As someone

Who finds FtM's quiet dishy, I will make sure to check this out.

Continued coverage

miss chatelaine

If there's interest I'd be happy to continue reporting on each issue. You should contact them though. They might be able to ship internationally. Where do you live?

Matya Dio's picture

i'd definitely subscribe, if

i'd definitely subscribe, if they'll ship to europe

ever since i moved to Czech Republic, i am lacking 'family' support, as the trans fraction of the 4 gay percent in a ten million person country is rather nonexistent..

;)

miss chatelaine's picture

it's not so much the shipping problem

as the getting-through-customs and arriving-at-my-doorstep-where-I-live-with-my-parents problems. I just balk at the idea of the customs guys opening it up and then knowing where I live. And it'd be considered (gay) porn here, which is definitely illegal AND a double whammy.

But I hugely like the fact that it's got publicity here! It's always good to have blog posts on transgender issues, and I'm glad that AfterEllen is reporting on them :)

Wow...

That first picture on the website of OP made me pause... I'll have to check a couple bookstores here to see if they sell it *fingers crossed*.

I really hope it's going to be a succes. I'll try and do my part by buying the magazine (which of course I'll only do to support the FtM community, not for the juicy pictures at all).

To everyone who may have a problem with getting the mag overseas, take heart: you can, of course, go to the website AND you can also follow OP on Twitter and Facebook.

oh I love Katastrophe

I met him in Atlanta when he perfomed at this thing called Mondohomo.  My gay male friend was obsessed with him and refused to believe he was trans... but I assured him he was! He IS certainly sexy and excellent cover page material!  I hope that they feature Athens Boys Choir (his name is Katz) in the next issue!! Yall should check him out!  http://www.athensboyschoir.com/

He performs with Katastrophe and is just a delight!!!  Everyone should checkout his song/video Fagette.  http://www.athensboyschoir.com/?page=video&id=4

Because for real tho, I got a dildo....

Fagette

Thanks for the link to the vid. Love the song. I'll definitely check out more stuff by Athens Boys Choir and Katastrophe.

And here I was thinking I was the only one with a thing for trans guys!

trans-heaven

Oh dear but you all are certainly not the only ones interested in transguys! And there are so many projects, websites, etc (Check out XXBoys). Do we need to do a top 10 hottest FTM post?
Matya Dio's picture

top ten hottest FtM?

why not.. come on Alley Hector, what's the celebrity list?

ho'bout starting with Buck Angel?

;)

Psynomi's picture

Good idea

I'd check that out :)

Thanks

Thanks so much for posting this. Like some of the other posters, I have also noticed that Afterellen doesn't seem to post a lot of articles on FTM's and female masculinity. Of course, it's hard to find stuff out there in general...(believe me.)

So as a genderqueer who is still exploring my identity I thank you for posting this. It has been a great resource in my continuing exploration of my identity.

Good catch. I love Butt but

Good catch. I love Butt but never really liked On Our Backs. It seemed like the editors of the mag for dykes never understood the former's wicked sense of humor. It seemed pretty spiritless all over. I should check OP. Their website sucks, though. It serves only for promotion of the print issue, but should have actual content, don't you think?
