RachelWatch: Judge Maddow SpeaksToday: Rachel has gone fishin’ and Victor Fehrenbach goes to the White House.
Rachel is off this week, but you can check back here for a daily fix of favorite clips. “Fierce Advocate” In the meantime, there was some news. Guest host Alison Stewart led off with President Obama’s address to members of the LGBT community at the White House. The occasion was in recognition of the 40th anniversary of Stonewall and the fact that many members of said community are pissed off enough to stop donating. I feel like I should be either as joyous or as angry as some people are about this, but so far I’m sticking to a hopeful but wary expectation. And a certain amount of relief that someone seems to have coached Obama out of his tone-deafness on the matter. Stewart welcomed attendee Lieutenant Colonel Victor Fehrenbach, who is still fired for being heroic while gay. I’m always uncomfortable with the point that acceptance is in part a generational issue. Do you think people can feel it when millions of others are quietly waiting for them to die? Let’s (almost) lighten things up with Judge Maddow and The Case of the Giggles. *shock*
Where... where... *blink*... where's Rachel? She's off? I don't remember approving that request.
The Rachel Maddow show without Rachel, that's like a bar without beer. Like France without wine. Like Belgium without really bad drivers.
Although I must say, Alison Stewart is doing a good job. She's just. Not. Rachel. Maddow.
I agree, the request wasn't
I agree, the request wasn't on my desk either...! Damn, I have to find something different to keep me from working, oh yeah, there's an archive of her show =)
Note about your comparison what the show is like without her: I guess there's not many Belgium cars on German roads, I only know this saying about Dutch drivers "How can you tell somebody flunked their driving test? - They get a yellow license plate!" [Comparing Belgium to the Netherlands is probably just as bad as comparing Germany to Austria, but I just HAD to make that comment ;)]
Do you think people can
Do you think people can feel it when millions of others are quietly waiting for them to die?
Sadly, this is an issue that is largely generational. That comment makes me squirm, but there is great truth to it.
There's a saying in churches, "Nothing wrong with this congregation that a few well-timed funerals won't cure."
I Heart Alison Stewart =)
I remember Alison Stewart back in the MTV days when she was a VJ. I haven't seen her in a long time. She is looking good as usual. Dayum! =) . I'm glad to know she's still around. I'm glad MSNBC placed her as a fill in for RM.
I'm glad Obama reminded th white impatient LGBTQIA community that he and his new administration only been in office for six months. To me the white LGBTQIA is little too pushy and inconsiderate. Too bad they weren't this way with the former white presidents : W, Clinton and Big Daddy Bush, hmmm. Racist mentality still rings in the minds of these rich white political and media LGBTQIA folks. I'm like to see my president is not a push over =).
Now it seems like this will be a generational political issue and that's a problem. I think the whole LGBTQIA comm need to redirect their focus to racial and immigtate minorities and the older generation.
Rats ,Alison Stewart is married and straight. Oh well!
Wow.
I'm glad Obama reminded th white impatient LGBTQIA community that he and his new administration only been in office for six months. To me the white LGBTQIA is little too pushy and inconsiderate.
So it's too early to expect President Fierce Advocate's Justice Department not to compare gay marriage to incest and pedophilia? Really? I boggle.
A rant
I know, she didn't ask my permission to take time off either. My wife and I are really bummed that we can't watch her for another week.
As for President Obama ... What I gathered watching his speech last night was that it is no more fair for him to ask us - the LGBT community - to wait than it was for previous presidents to ask African Americans to wait.
I think all minorities need attention, and to have their/our rights focused on. I agree that the black and latino communities etc. could use a leg up as could the LGBT community. I look forward to the day when Obama keeps his promise to be a champion for our cause. I have no doubt that he will.
I'm Canadian. In Canada we have full equality. Gay marriage in fact has not led to the decline or demise of this society. We also have universal healthcare for that matter - we've had it since 1946.
A final note re: "To me the white LGBTQIA is little too pushy and inconsiderate. Too bad they weren't this way with the former white presidents : W, Clinton and Big Daddy Bush, hmmm." And I mean this with the utmost respect: I and everyone I know hated w. with a passion. And people were outraged when clinton signed don't ask don't tell. The difference here is that we expect so much more from President Obama, because he is phenomenal.
That's Not What I Was Referring To
So it's too early to expect President Fierce Advocate's Justice Department not to compare gay marriage to incest and pedophilia? Really? I boggle.
Thanks for speaking your mind scorpio54, however that isn't what I'm talking about. Amazing how you point out one thing I was not referring to. Amazing.
It's too early to put in fast requests for overturning DOMA and DADT,etc. It's like some people want this be overturn now when there is a process to be handled and on top that older generational stubborness is a challenge for him. It's more than what DOJ did. I was very upset and wrote Obama a personal letter with my full name and everything to him. I greatly didn't appreeciate the fact he let that slip by him and he needs to check his people and see if everryone is on the same agenda.
I was referring to rich, white LGBTQIA politicans and media just pushing him up against the wall when in fact he just got theere and no one's done that with Clinton or George W. Bush. I believe you missed my over view of my take on his speech.
I'm glad you here to provide a different perspective on things. Keep doing what you're doing.
Peace!
Don't know what this refers to.
I'm glad you here to provide a different perspective on things. Keep doing what you're doing.
Happy to oblige.
Watching from this side of the Atlantic, President Obama has looked to be all talk and no walk when it comes to gay issues, but apparently I was wrong. In among all the usual pretty words he said this:
"We have made progress, and we will make more"
That seems fairly unequivocal so obviously I've missed something - easy to do when you're an ocean away. So could you tell me what he's done that he's referring to here? Thanks.
You're Not American So Don't Trust All American Media
Don't trust all American media. They askew things a lot. The media is controlled by predom white Americans. I see how they trash celebs look at Michael Jackson, he's deceased and not praise for his musical genius after he is gone. Yet, when he was alive constantly replay his troubles to us the public. Did they do that to Elvis? No. Some American media trash pretty much a lot of people mainly celebs and politicans.
Anyway. I'm more happy to give you the dose of truth. If you want to know American political things plese go to our www.whitehouse.gov to see what is going on. Or even NPR at www.npr.org . NPR is a highly intersting site.
Too many media opinions and very little facts.
OK
OK, but could you explain what President Obama was referring to in those words I quoted above, which I transcribed myself from the videoclip at the top of this page?
Thanks.
Phenonmenal Doesn't Mean Overnight Success
And I mean this with the utmost respect: I and everyone I know hated w. with a passion. And people were outraged when clinton signed don't ask don't tell. The difference here is that we expect so much more from President Obama, because he is phenomenal.
PH2009, thanks for the respect. Out of respect to you. Obama is not a superhero nor is he an overnight success. I believe some people come off as ignorant to me. Sometimes you need to step away and stay calm and let divine take its course. I see DADT and DOMA being repealed. I want that more than anything. My persective is different people b/c I'm more spiritual and different than anyone else in here. So I can see things you're not able to see.
This message is important. I know some people ar fed up and sick and tired. However things come to you in mysterious ways. Yes, I wish LGBTQIA soldiers weren't being discharge right now for being who they are. I truly believe Obama will fulfill his promises. However, there is one challenge in the way and it is the generational challenge. So it is up to each and everyone of you to do your duty while Obama and his team do theirs to educate the uneducate about who you are and LGBTQIA comunity. Stop homophobia in its tracks and use all the resources given to you to put out injustices that still burns. To me,when you do that you are gaining power and initating change.
However, crying, bitching, pulling your hair out and and writing commentaries about the recycle compliants about Obama is not moving fast enough blah blah isn't helping but hurting. With all that passion these people have in protesting, write commentaries and vblogs about this and that I bet many people have not stood up to their companies about homophobia or sexual harrassment or folks talking about LGBTQIA community. Have you come out to family and love ones? You want to know why? You're silent in the workplace and around your family b/c of security, you need your job and your family. Seriously, this is more than a LGBTQIA issue. You're vocal on here why? By telling me how you feel isn't really going to change things if you aren't makng a difference personally in your life. Change begins with self not with the government. Change begins with self-awareness and activism and strength not in political leaderships. Once those changes occurr inside of you; it will give you the power to be vocal against your company and your family.
By saying the above paragrah, I am saying it in a general way.
I wish peoplewere more spiritual in the LGBTQIA community. I think it will help out a lot.
Fair enough :) Thanks.
Fair enough :) Thanks.
Personally I've engaged in my fair share of activism, http://archives.xtra.ca/Story.aspx?s=2258240 and plan to fight for equality as much as possible. I've been out since I was just a little baby dyke. But I understand your point: the fight for equality starts in our own back yards, and sometimes it's gradual. But,
If not now, when? / If not today, then / What about tomorrow? / What happens tomorrow?
- Melissa Etheridge
I just hope it happens soon.
Thanks for your insight.
O_o
I am having some difficulty following the logic behind some of your conclusions. I do agree that activism should begin within one's self. I've attended several protests and rallies, and a key message that is usually sent is about having one-on-one dialogue. I am out to my friends, family, and co-workers. This is about changing the hearts and minds of individuals. With that said, I also think we need to do our part politically by contacting our representatives and telling them how we feel about certain issues. We don't have the power to repeal federal legislation, but we have the power as constituents to influence the legislators who can.
Also, to reduce this to rich white's vs black president is to oversimplify and ignore the issues. Few groups were pushing hard when Bush was in office because he had already made clear where he stands. He never pandered to the LGBT community for votes by making promises for our equality. Obama did. Our nation as a whole was also in a different place with respect to LGBT issues a couple presidents ago. I don't think anyone was happy when Clinton signed DADT or DoMA - maybe I would've been more active if I wasn't in middle school at the time. But that also underscores what Obama said- there is a generational gap. A lot of the younger generation is starting to become active and we now have a president who will listen.
I just returned from San Francisco's Pride event, and I marched right behind Lt Dan Choi, who was one of the grand marshals of the parade. He is not white, nor does he come from an extremely wealthy family. He is simply fed up with hiding who he is, when everything he learned at West Point was about truth, honor, and serving this country. I think we owe it to these courageous individuals to fight beside them in whatever way we can.
If we stop being vocal about these issues, people will invariably forget, as it seems American's attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. We are allowed to be disappointed because Obama gave us hope. I still have my hope and I do believe change will happen during his presidency.
Thank you..
for putting into words exactly what I was thinking. I couldn't have said it better myself.
I Aplogize For Being A-Hole!
I've been tripping lately since this whole racial issue has been occurring within the LGBTQIA community. I apologize. You're right. I didn't mean to come across as an $$hole, but I did. I am just sensitive to certain issues. I apologize to everybody including myself and the Divine.
it's ok!
I must honestly say..
Urgh!!
Urgh!! You're frickin' KILLING me Rachel! I diligently downloaded my podcast this morning to watch after work.....only to read this?? Sad, sad, sad. : ( Hmmph. I guess I will survive. And I suppose she DOES deserve a vacation. Ok, I think I am better. Just letting it sink in...

A week?!
The entire week?! That's an awful long time to go without my Rachel fix. Ok now I'm done with my selfish rant. Everyone needs a break every once in a while so I hope she's having a good time.
