News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

What, no "Wild Things"?

The latest Entertainment Weekly raises the question of what makes a movie sexy. Well, they really just present their list of “The 50 Sexiest Movies Ever,” but their designation of the sexiest moment in each movie selected suggests that the factors that contribute to movie sexiness are varied. (You can find EW’s 1-25 here and 26-50 here.)

For example, it can be an explicitly sexual act such as frenzied coitus in an alley in the rain (9 ½ Weeks, #24) or a same-sex kiss with lingering drool (Cruel Intentions¸ #32). It can be suggestive dancing tinged with violence (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, #3), or just an erotically delivered song (The Fabulous Baker Boys, #12). It can even be two strangers (Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood) making dinner (The Bridges of Madison County, #45).

And I get this. While Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood don’t do it for me as a couple, just the idea of Meryl Streep and Allison Janney as a couple — regardless of the lack of sexual contact between them — made The Hours an incredibly sexy movie to me.

Although I certainly disagree with some of EW’s list — anything with Kevin Costner (ew!) — I would include a number of their choices were I to make my own list of sexy movies. And what makes a movie sexy is clearly not an objective measure. Reasonable people can are likely to disagree. For me, there has to be palpable attraction between the characters. It’s even better, of course, when both (all?) characters sharing attraction are women.

There’s a fair amount of lesbian/bi-curious content to be found on the EW list — oddly, there’s considerable more lesbian representation in a “That’s hot” list than there usually is on their talent/power/intelligence lists. (Imagine that.) So I took a look at these options to assess whether I consider them among the sexiest movies of all time.

Mullholland Drive (#17) — No

The sexiest moment identified is the sex scene between Naomi Watts and Laura Elena Harring. I just didn’t get the connection between the women, much less feel the heat, but perhaps that’s because I don’t really get David Lynch. However, the friends with whom I saw it (one lesbian, one bisexual woman) both loved it, so reasonable people can certainly disagree.

Swimming Pool (#18) — Maybe

I cannot really remember this but I know it had something a little lesbianish going on. However, the fact that it didn’t stick doesn’t bode well.

Basic Instinct (#21) — No

Oddly, I’m not turned on by bisexual ice pick murderers.

Love & Basketball (#28) — Yes

OK, I did not find the real version of this particularly sexy, but the version in my head in which Sanna Lathan is in love with teammate/rival Erika Ringor instead of Omar Epps is definitely hot.

Bound (#29) — Yes

Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes. The tension between Corky and Violet is established early, and the sex doesn’t exorcise the tension. The cinematography, the interplay and conflict between greed and loyalty, and the sheer chemistry make this an incredibly sexy movie. Plus they ride off into the sunset together at the end, and I love that.

Cruel Intentions (#32) — No

I get why the drooly kiss won an MTV Movie Award, and I can see how the whole power/manipulation thing could be sexy if well-executed — but this was not.

Little Children (#42) — Yes

There’s nothing overtly lesbian in this movie, but sight of Kate Winslet’s lovely curves in the brief nude scene was one of the most erotic sights I’ve responded to in a movie in years. And that makes it lesbian to me.

Kissing Jessica Stein (#47) — Yes

It’s a stretch to call this one of the sexiest movies of all time, but the lesbian pickings are slim. (When I asked a friend for examples of others, she replied, “Sexy lesbian movies? Isn’t that an oxymoron?”) I agree with the EW editors, though, that the thigh-fondling under the table in the bar as the guys describe why girl-on-girl action is hot is a reasonably sexy moment in a not overly-sexy movie.

Of course, after reviewing EW’s list, I had to consider what movies were not there. So after I conducted a scientific poll of friends and, together, we identified a few outstanding omissions:

Sexiest bi-curious movie: Wild Things

Neve Campbell and Denise Richards are basically straight girls kissing each other, but they have chemistry and the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Sexiest lesbian vampire movie: The Hunger

I’m generally not into vampire themes, but Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon? Yes, it’s a little porn-y that Susan Sarandon keeps her high heels on during the sex scene, but that pairing is one of the sexiest I have ever seen.

Sexiest coming-out movie: Desert Hearts

I know that I’m influenced by the role this movie played in my coming out process, but I think it holds up.

Sexiest lesbian circus performer movie: When Night is Falling

I only saw this movie once but what I remember is serious chemistry between the women.

I could go on, but I’ll leave that to the rest of you. What do you think of Entertainment Weekly list? And what movies would be on your list of the all-time sexiest movies?

    Yay Bound!

EW really got it right with Bound, because that's definitely one of the sexiest movies I know.

Sexiest Lesbian Romantic Comedy I would give to Better Than Chocolate (and I thought so long before Ladycops made me develop a huge crush on Christina Cox). It's sweet, and funny, but that doesn't keep it from being sexy, it's just a lovely balance.

How about Sexiest Guilty Pleasure to Showgirls. Gina Gershon and mostly naked women everywhere? Hello? I'm only human, after all...

And to deviate a little, for Sexiest Movie Without Lesbian Themes, The Thomas Crown Affair (1999), because Rene Russo in that movie is just amazing. She's beautiful, but what more, she's so free with her sexuality and her enjoyment of life, that I find her incredibly sexy to watch. And it's just a beautiful movie.

    Sexiest

Ooo, I agree with The Thomas Crown Affair, that was really really sexy.

My number one sexiest lesbian scene, yes even tops Bound in my opinion:

The love scene in Loving Annabelle, without a doubt.  Erin Kelly and Diane Gaidry were superb and the sexual tension throughout the whole movie made the scene even hotter.

    When Night is Falling

...  Is a beautiful, sexy movie.  YOW!  If you haven't seen it- check it out.  The lead character's lips are enough to make it worthwhile.

    When Night is Falling

I totally agree! The first kiss in the foyer....hottest kiss on film that I have seen.

I have to throw in Imagine You and Me...Piper Perabo with a British accent, but still very hot!

    cosmiccowgirl's picture

    Tipping the Velvet

They definitely got Bound right. That would probably be my pick for sexiest movie ever. Desert Hearts and The Hunger would be right up there, too. And I would add Tipping the Velvet. In addition to the sex scenes, the scene in which Kitty takes off Nan's glove and says she smells like a mermaid is one of the hottest things I've ever read or seen.

    Demi Moore

I LOVED 'The bridges of madison county' Great chemistry between Streep and Eastwood, totally get that one!!!! And the Mulholland drive sex scene, DAMN so HOT, loved the heavy breathing part;P and yes also loved 'Wild things'

but my all time number one 'sexiest scene" is (shame*shame) not even a lesbian scene.. It's the sex scene between Demi Moore and Michael Douglas in Disclosure...

    Natazzz's picture

    Wild Things

I will always have fond memories of Wild Things.

While it definitely isn't the greatest movie I've ever seen...it was watching Neve Campbell and Denise Richards make out that made me know without a doubt I was sooooooo gay.

    More sexy movies

If These Walls Could Talk 2 - Every scene between Michelle Williams and Chloe Sevigny. This movie also has the least sexy scene. Ellen DeGeneres looks so uncomfortable in her sex scene with Sharon Stone, it makes me uncomfortable.

Gia - The photo shoot with Angelina Jolie and Elizabeth Mitchell on opposite sides of a chain link fence.

    Sexiest not having sex scene:

Show Me Love - Elin exits the school bathroom holding Agnes's hand and announces to her stunned classmates that they're going home to have sex. Cut to Elin's bed where a sexually experienced (with boys) Elin is handing Agnes a glass of chocolate milk and launching into a nervous babble about her poor chocolate milk making skills. It's funny but Elin's sudden innocence (because it's not just sex this time) is hot.

    Honorable mention:

Fried Green Tomatoes - With their feet in the water, Ruth tells Idgie it's her best birthday ever and chastely kisses her then jumps into the water. Idgie sits on the shore with a look on her face that says it all.

    Mediocre movies with sexy scenes:

Better Than Chocolate - Maggie and Kim have sex on the couch with Maggie's mom and brother nearby, and Maggie can't be quiet.

Wild Side - I hardly remember this movie, but Anne Heche and Joan Chen were hot together.

Everything Relative - When Maria strips and swims out to Josie, and when they fall into the water. Also, when Gina and Luce (Dreya Weber) finally hook up.

It's in the Water - The first-timer takes the reins.
Grace: We can get another room.
    Alex: I'm not that nervous.

    woody-69's picture

    Ellen

I had blocked this from my mind I guess, but YES!! Ellen and Sharon were so awkward. Sharon overacts in most things, but she should have won an overacting award for this love scene.

Chloe and Michelle....totally agree. That 1st kiss on the sidewalk...you can see the lust in their eyes, and hear it in the breaths.

    JaimitaPR's picture

    Better than Chocolate

I have to say that, for me, the sexiest scene in this movie is not the couch scene, but the nude painting scene when they are creating the "godesses."
    kwright's picture

    But I'm a Cheerleader

Besides being a great campy movie...Clea Duvall is just sexy, no matter what.  The scenes between Graham and Megan are beautiful and full of chemistry.

... didn't think the movie was all that good, but the chemistry between Ellen Barkin and Peta Wilson: HOT. The kitchen scene... Good grief! Have mercy!

Yes, I agree. Susan Sarandon is hot in anything she does.

I'd watch Meryl Streep watching paint dry too.

    Some of my favourites have

Some of my favourites have been mentioned already. But I'll add on my love of Fried Green Tomatoes

Sexy: The Gymnast, when  Jane (Dreya Weber) and Serena (Addie Yungmee) are suspended by the the same cloth and moving around. It's breathtakingly beautiful. Also their performance in front of the audience is just gorgeous.

Sweet & Sad: Losing Chase, when Chase (Helen Mirren) starts to realise that she's fallen for Elizabeth (Kyra Sedgewick).

Non-Sexual: Sense & Sensibility. Emma Thompson & Kate Winslet in period costumes. So they played sisters, but that's not the point.

Kim: Just when you thought life couldn't get any worse you're a virgin with a sexually transmitted disease! (Sugar Rush)

    Robin Jay's picture

    I agree with Swimming Pool!

Ludivine Sagnier was so hot + half naked for the entire 102 minutes! I can't remember the storyline though... don't care about the storyline though...

    What about Henry and June?

What about Henry and June? There are several hot scenes between Uma Thurman and Maria de Medeiros in that, including a great lesbian bar scene set in the 1930s in Paris. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFTwMsUCScA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNlwvcscz8Y

Then there's that hot dance scene between Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd in Frida: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5RteM-3utI Gorgeous!

And let's go further back to 1930, to Marlene Dietrich in a tuxedo, kissing a woman in Morocco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jO0h190oboE

Those of us of a certain age all remember Little Darlings, with Tatum O'Neal, Matt Dillon, and Kristy McNichol. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g4B7waFWjA Though there are no lesbian scenes in the movie, the chemistry between McNichol and O'Neal is palpable and Dillon is as pretty as a girl. McNichol was a major lesbian crush for a LOT of young girls at that time. When I was a preteen, this movie made me feel all funny inside. (And, yes, a very young Cynthia Nixon is in the movie too.)

    Ace's picture

    Little Darlings

I thought about Little Darlings when I was writing this. I agree that the tension between them was pretty intense -- and I had a big crush on Matt Dillon as well as Kristy McNichol back in the day. :-)

    issyvoo's picture

    Little Darlings again

A few years ago, the Vancouver queer film festival had a screening of Little Darlings and the theatre was packed with women. Interestingly, they all sighed when McNichol first came on screen but they also all sighed when Matt Dillon came on too.

Did you ever notice how all three of the leads have the same haircut and the same kind of androgynous prettiness in that movie? It certainly was a different time!

Mmm, agreed on the ones I have seen

Bound is *definitely* the sexiest movie ever. There cannot be a lesbian on the planet that does not want to shag both Corky and Violet.

Other goodies for sexual tension are Desert Hearts and Mulholland Drive (the photo above doesnt show Harring and Watts, but that Ozzie girl) - Watts & Harring are definitely hot together.

Agreed with some of the others about Fingersmith - that too has a lot of sexual tension and antici....pation...

    Yess

And I get this. While Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood don’t do it for me as a couple, just the idea of Meryl Streep and Allison Janney as a couple — regardless of the lack of sexual contact between them — made The Hours an incredibly sexy movie to me.

I could not agree more!! Just the mere idea off these two as a couple makes the movie incredibly sexy to me. They look so good together! Imagine if we'd actually seen more then just that one chaste kiss at the end. Smokin' baby!!

Everybody has already givin all my movie examples, so ill refrain from going into that ;-). But pretty much anything with two girls, chemistry and kissing/nudity in it will do it for me ;-).
