Spike TV has body issuesI have my share of strong opinions, but occasionally I read something so well-written and compelling that it leads me to question fundamental beliefs and feel chagrinned at how wrong I was. For example — and try not to judge me too harshly for this — I used to believe that Salma Hayek was notable because of her accomplishments and intelligence and insanely good looks. But I was so wrong. What's notable about her is her weight.
Spike.com’s list of “The Top 7 Butterbodies” made it explicitly clear that she’s too fat. (A butterbody, by the way, is “a woman who has a beautiful face but a body that’s gone to butter.” Isn’t that amazingly witty?) I mean, I might once have looked at this picture and thought, “Eh, I don’t love the dress but, oh my, she’s lovely.” But now I know that her dress is hiding a “beer gut.” (It is worth noting, however, that her weight gain is not entirely offensive because so much of it went to her breasts.) Sara Ramirez and America Ferrera are another story. Ramirez might say it's "cool" that she and Ferrera "represent a group of women who aren't stick-thin,” but Ramirez has actually failed her fans by not slimming down after getting famous.
Ferrera is even worse! "She basically gives women an excuse to be fat." Can you believe that I just used to think she was attractive and talented? Now I’m a little embarrassed.
Even more embarrassing is that there was a time when I would have looked at a picture of Sara Ramirez — such as the one on the right — and thought that anyone who could not see how insanely hot she was did not deserve to have eyes. I was just so silly. Also, when I used to see an airbrushed fashion shot and a candid, non-posed moment, I used to conclude that real people don’t look like airbrushed photos.
But now I know better: Liv Tyler has just transformed into a “frumpy frump.” I suppose as long as I have confessed to so many of my crazy beliefs, I might as well share a couple more. There was a time when I thought it was admirable that Tyra Banks addressed the tabloid obsession with her weight gain by noting that she was a healthy weight for her size, and speculating that this obsession might fuel body dysmorphia in impressionable young girls.
But, really, it’s so much easier just to make a comment like this about her: "Tyra Banks is so desperate to be Oprah that she has piled on the pounds." Get it? Oprah and Banks are both talk show host/actor/producers. And they’re both fat! Isn’t that funny? Finally — and most embarrassingly — I labored under the delusion that a variety of different body types could be hot, that many factors — including confidence, experience and intelligence — enhance a woman’s attractiveness, and that curves were sexy as all get out. In fact, I agreed with other AfterEllen.com readers that five of the seven “butterbodies” on this list (Sarah Ramirez, Drew Barrymore, America Ferrera, Salma Hayek, Liv Tyler) deserved to appear in the first two AfterEllen.com Hot 100 lists. But, of course, the reality is that only “super-thin” women are truly hot. Oh, and I also believed that dumb ass bloggers who posted the blog equivalent of a “No Fat Chicks” T-shirt were serious losers who wouldn’t recognize a truly attractive woman if she were standing in front of them not noticing their sorry asses. Salma Hayek's breasts in that picture frighten me. Especially after reading those Jane's World comics. They are enormous.

I actually just found an interesting story about that yesterday. Turns out she's still breastfeeding her daughter, which has more than a few people's panties in a twist (even though it's none of their business).

The only ones who don't
The only ones who don't look extremely hot in their "butterbody" pictures are Salma Hayek and Liv Tyler, and that's just because of bad photos/poor outfit choice. I was just thinking last night watching 30 Rock how Salma Hayek is WAY too attractive to be paired with Alec Baldwin.
Oh well, the comments on that "article" are hilarious. I especially like the one about how his mother must be proud.

I think Keira Knightly is okay too. She just seems like the naturally wirey type. I don't want women's bodies being policed any which way. And I thought it was cool that Knightly said no to her photoshopped boobs on her "Duchess" poster.

As I read the article in Spike, all I could come up with to say was, Ok, Really? I am so ridiculously gay its crazy. I'm like professionally gay. Every time a straight man opens up his mouth I find it increasingly more difficult to understand anything about their species. I think that most of their issues must come from insane insecurities..or maybe i just give them too much credit.

I'm probably grasping at nothing here, but I really, really hope this article is actually supposed to be satirical about unhealthy body standards among celebrities...because NONE of those pictures made me think "Butter body."
Satire or not, at least the people who read it are too smart to take it seriously.
I wondered about that, too.
I read the comments and one of them said that all the other commenters missed the sarcasm. So, I reread it looking for the saracasm, and I couldn't spot it. (And as a New York Jew, I trust my sarcas-o-mometer.)
I don't doubt that the writer is trying to be funny and is deliberately going over-the-top. But if it was intended to be satire, it was very inartfully executed.
"Nick Cole" wrote the article, not every man on earth.
This article is ridiculous, but it's important not to assume that every man is going to agree with it. In fact, I'm going to assume the majority of them will think it's as crazy as we do-- nearly all the comments on the article page at Spike blast Mr. Cole for his poor judgements.
And psych research indicates that the ideal female form in the majority of men's minds will be more full-bodied than the ideal female form in the majority of women's minds--- yanno, impossible media standards of beauty, teenage anorexic girls, etc etc.
Basically what I'm saying is-- Nick Cole is a bizzarre, poo-brained exception rather than a prototypical dude. Before everyone here goes and says, "UH!! Men suck!", let's cut them some slack. We're lesbians (and bisexuals), not man-haters, right?

I caught a show on Spike when I was in a hotel and nothing else was on -- Even the name of the show was borderline but I can't recall it right now. Anyway, there was this show on talking about how drinking beer can increase a woman's breast size. Of course, the entire time they were 'reporting' this the camera was focused on breasts that were 'too small' and men plying these women with beer. Then it would pan to women with breasts of a size the men could 'appreciate'.
Trash TV would have been a better name for the channel.

The Spike article was the worst article I've ever read. I'm glad that people like Sara and America are out there. There are finally real women in entertainment. Nick clearly had nothing better to do than come up with an offensive article. I can't say that I know anyone, male or female, who wouldn't want to be with at least one of the women on that list.

i don't think its to be taken seriously. the comment about Salma Hayek made me giggle: "Her only saving grace is her magnificent breasts. The extra weight she gained has gone directly to her breasts, and it is glorious."
When i 1st saw the picture i didnt think she looked fat (although that dress certainly doesnt make her look thin) i just was amazed how big her boobs looked.
Although it is kinda funny as a joke, i don't think Tyra should be made fun of. She is pretty much the closest thing there is to a God. Only Janice Dickinson can get away with calling Tyra fat and even Janice took back that comment.

I think these women are all beautiful and I particularly have a soft spot for Liv Tyler. She's always been slightly fully figured, mainly as she's quite tall and well proportioned, not skinny skinny. However I've seen pics of her looking a little bit bigger, a little bit smaller. I mean, my weight fluctuates, so does that of my friends. Anyways, suffice to say, I think she looks gorgeous and I wish she swung this way, lol.
Um, also, it kind of makes me a bit upset to see a bunch of men saying this about women. As if women don't have it hard enough in terms of pressure and expectation. I mean, they'd have a field day with me. Acting is so sizest, I'm so glad actresses like this exist.

What do you expect?
I've had a love-hate relationship with Spike since they announced years ago they were going to start this new, ``revolutionary'' cable channel for men, since there were tons for women but none for men. (I am still laughing with disbelief at the press release. What??)
I have to get my Star Trek from them, and it's a good place to catch up on some CSI and CSI:NY. But the price is watching commercials for ``Manswers'' -- (how else are men going to find out who the biggest sl-ts are: straight chicks, bi chicks or lesbians? Thank goodness they have a reliable way to get these informative tips.) as well as all the ads for male enhancement and for Girls Gone Wild videos. I am so not surprised that a bunch of tools who think Steven Segal is god and that shows made up of clips of pets attacking people or car chases going bad are good programming would consider this an article worthy of writing and posting.
