Kristen Stewart is cast as Joan Jett for The Runaways biopic

In spring of 2007, Dorothy Snarker challenged us to cast the upcoming biopic of the '70s girl-group-punk-band, The Runaways.

The production team has finally begun to do the work for us. It was announced today that Kristen Stewart has been cast as young Joan Jett.

I’ve read a few comments indicating that some folks find this to be terrible casting, but I’m not yet sure how to react. I know that I want this movie to be done well. The Runaways paved the way for other women rockers and their legacy deserves respect. Additionally, I’m quite impressed that the band members generally survived teenage punk stardom quite well.

Bassist Jackie Fox is an entertainment lawyer in Southern California. Lead singer Cherrie Currie owns a chainsaw art gallery in Chatsworth, Calif.

Guitarist Lita Ford is still rocking, and recently recorded a duet of “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” with Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider. Drummer Sandy West, unfortunately, passed away from lung cancer in 2006.

Lita Ford

And then, of course, there’s Joan Jett. Referred to a couple years ago in a review as “the hard rock Dorian Gray,” she has continued to perform with the Blackhearts and produce other bands on her label, Blackheart Records. She did a turn on Broadway a few years back as Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show. I used to see her in her courtside seats at New York Liberty games. Jett is an executive producer on the movie so her influence will clearly be felt.

Which brings us back to Kristen Stewart.

I’m astoundingly unfamiliar with Stewart’s work, so I find myself unable to offer any intelligent opinion on this important bit of casting news. I haven’t seen a movie of hers since her baby dyke-esque turn as Jodie Foster’s daughter in Panic Room. I know that some people love her as Bella in Twilight, and some do not. I know that she’s really close friends with Nikki Reed. And that’s it.

So I’m turning this one over to you: Do you think Kristen Stewart loves rock-and-roll enough to bring '70s girl punk back to life?

    wohoo!

I think it's a great casting choice! Great actress, gorgeous! amen!

    girlfriendinacoma's picture

    she's gonna kill it.

that's probably the best casting for that role i could have imagined.

stewart has such a masculine energy, some even think she resembles a young kate moennig.

i'm really excited to see how this turns out.

oh, I totally agree! i like

oh, I totally agree! i like kristen stewart...she has a knack for making an absolute crap movie bearable (Twilight, In the Land of Women)...the whole time I was watching Twilight I was trying to figure out who she reminded me of...kate moennig is it!
    loving-the-pink's picture

    very good choice

she's awesome! looking forward to it!  and yeah i see the kate moening likeness!

    Avril Lavigne

Kristin Stewart is hot. But I get too much of an Avril Lavigne "pop princess" who wears a studded belt and calls herself punk vibe. I'm not dissing Avril (I listened to Let Go like a fiend when it came out), but she's no Joan Jett. They should've gone for someone a little less glamorous, maybe a little less "in," and definitely more real. Someone who might actually have some sort of intimate connection with the punk or feminist movements and could put some personality into it.
    Ace's picture

    Avril Lavigne

One of my first thoughts when I read the casting news was relief that they didn't go with Avril Lavigne. (I have no problem with her but it's clear that she doesn't get punk.)

Your point about going with someone who has a more intimate connection with the punk or feminist movements is interesting, but it seems tricky. How does someone born in 1990 or later really have an intimate connection with these movements? I'm not saying that young women can't be feminists or can't get punk, but there's something inherently retro about both movements.

    MusicBum's picture

    Totally agree

    also...

    Glamorous?

She looks pretty glam in photo shoots, but I wouldn't put Kristen Stewart in that category.  Sure she's gorgeous and a hell of a lot more famous now because of Twilight, but she really doesn't come off as your typical Hollywood starlet.  Bottom line: she can act.  By the way, you should watch some of her interviews.  Your opinion of her might change a bit.  She has this sort of attitude.  Not in a bad way... she just seems uninterested in b.s.  Haha

    woo.

Kristen's decked out in Shanewares in that last pica.

She's rocking it better than Shane could ever hope to.

    Good casting choice?

*throws up rock hands* Heck yes.

Shanewares? That's funny. Made me laugh out loud.

    i like it!

kristen can totally pull off the hard rocker / slightly masculine-look, and there's no doubt (twilight-aside), that she's a talented actress. wasnt that excited for a biopic, but now that i know she's been casted, im a heckuva lot more excited!

and wait, what's this about lizzy caplan?!? was she ever actually considered for the role? cause she's absolutely awesome. (hello, nude scenes in true blood, anyone???) oh, and she can act, too.

    absolutely

I knew nothing of Kristen before Twilight, in which I thought she was GREAT (of course you couldn't really tell anything from Panic Room)... but I think that she could pull it off! She seems to have some spunk, I'm looking forward to it!!!

    can't say

Sure she was cast because Twilight is somewhat of a hit (and her smokin habits are so rebellious) but she seems like she could play the part. Will she play it well? Who knows.

I'm really more curious as to who will round out the entire cast.

can't wait for the cheesy lip synchin.

    Underwhelmed by that choice

I confess that all I've seen from her is clips of her role in Twilight, but that does not make me sanguine about her playing Joan Jett.

She seemed very strained and wooden in Twilight but maybe that's how that character wa supposed to be played.

Maybe Chloe Sevigny or someone a little edgier? I know Chloe doesn't immediately look like Joan, but I think with some hair dye and the right clothes she could pull it off. She's a good enuff actress that I can see her doing it.

And to the person above who said Kristen does a better Shane than Shane. Ummm, I don't think so.

    i am dot's picture

    i'm going with... yes!

i think it's a good choice. i know kristen's the hottest thing right now because of twilight, but i think her new fame is a good thing. it will only help this movie get the attention it deserves. and i haven't decided if i see the resemblance between the two yet, but i do believe kristen is a good actress and she'll do the part justice. (see "the safety of objects" and "speak" from when she was just a wee tween)

    I Don't Know

Joan Jett is a female rock icon. I've seen Twlight over the weekend and Kristen Stewart is a darn good actress but that's all I know about her resume is that. I don't know. I'll just wait and see. I can't judge her on whether she'll make a good Joan Jett or not. Actors can fool people you know. What you think they don't have, they actually do.

    She's gonna be great
Kristen is genuinly an AMAZING actress and could totally pull off young Joan Jett, to me she's always seemed rock n' roll, despite the rolls she plays.

Though I could just be being super biased here because I have the biggest crush on her :D
But i'm very very very excited about this!

    gidge's picture

How can you not like her?

Kristin Stewart's Awesome! If you're not familiar with her "work" you should definitely check out a movie called Speak. If you think she can act after seeing Twilight, wait until you see that one! She is a great actress and I think that she could fill pretty much any role, especially the more serious (or darker) ones. Also, like a lot of others have said...she freakin' hot! --though that's not the only reason I admire her--I think she'll do great.
    Joan's picture

    I HOPE SHE DOES....

coz i don't want anybody to get disappointed with my crush of the year!!!!! she's hot

but im sure she can pull it off....she's a talented actress! so yeah i'll be watching the movie because of her!

    ^-^

Sooo glad the movie's gonna be made!

I've been a Joan Jett fan since diapers! I would listen to the ALBUMS my brother had. I can't wait for this to come to fruition. Very glad Ms Jett is heading up the project. I only wonder why she didn't want to participate in the documentary "Edgeplay" that the Runaway's did a few years ago...
    flashdancer's picture

    better joan than bella

i didnt like kristen in twilight, because i pictured bella as the stereotypical damsel in distress, to helplessly clumsy to help herself. instead, kristen gave me a masculine vibe, which didnt work for bella, but i think it might for joan jett.

hope she can pull it off.

Panic Room! That's where I know her from. I sat through Twilight trying to figure out why she looked so familiar. I think she can pull off the roll. From the two movies I've seen her in, she seems to be a pretty good actress.

Jena Malone would rock as Joan Jett

If I was a casting director, which I am obviously not so no harm done, I would have seriously considered Jena Malone ("Saved", etc...) for the Joan Jett role.  It will be interesting to see who else will be cast at the rest of the Runaways.
    Xxaire's picture

    Kate Moennig as Joan Jett

I think I read somewhere that Joan Jett was Kate's dream role. Poor thing; she's not getting any great movie opps.

Honestly though, I think Kate would have rocked it.

Do not judge, unless you want to be judged...

    ColetteLala's picture

    would have killed

Kate as Joan would have killed. That would have been a great role for her as well as a good opportunity to segue into films.

I like Kristen Stewart fine ever since she was in Speak, but can she sing? Can Kate sing?

    Anonymous's picture

They would never have cast Kate Moennig ...

She's 30 and has said she totally cannot sing (despite the rock star speaking voice) ... and the Runaways were in their teens.  One band member was only 15.

Kate's dream role is to play PATTI SMITH.

    another vote for Jena Malone

Yeah, I think Jena Malone would do a great job too. Not that Kristen Stewart will not pull it off. But Jena has more of a genuine punk attitude to her.

This is my mom Jennifer Beals...

am i the only 1 here who saw "Catch that Kid"?  Jennifer Beals played her mom and she robbed a bank with the help of her 2 friends and baby brother strapped to her back.  plus they used go karts as a getaway car...very cool.

Also "Speak" which played simultaneously on Showtime and Lifetime for rape awareness day or something...She was raped and she stopped speaking but no one really noticed she stopped speaking...i think there was an art class involved somehow, also Elizabeth Perkins played her mom and Eric Lively played the rapist.

she was also in "Into the Wild" which i did not see but heard she was good in.

    i'm glad with this casting

i'm glad with this casting choice. i think kristen is a great actor...haven't seen twilight....im only going to see it b.c im a fan of her....but ive seen some of her other films...and her peformance in speak is enough for me to see any of her movies. seriously...well done.

    Better than Bella

I think Kristen fits this role more than she did as Bella. Sure, she's glammed up in her photo shoots, but if you see any of her interviews, the whole glamorous Kristen seems unnatural. She also seems a little cynical than the Twilight character she was supposed to portray, so rocking as one of the Runaways should be a better fit I'm guessing.

    Kristen Stewart is Excellent casting

She look a lot like a young joan jet and she can act and for the no BS. in venezuela the word is

" antiparabolica " a star of a holliwood teen movie who doesnt care by  photos like this

and 1 of 2 she plays the guitar or she is already taking clases for the movie

and dont forget you cant beat the Jodie Foster Seal if she was good for the role of jodie daughter she has to be and excellent actresss, im looking forward to this movie already and i to see the kate moening likeness vibe

    Anonymous's picture

    I always thought that

I always thought that Katherine Moennig should play Joan because I find their mannerisms to be quite similar and they both ooze that coolness you either have or don't have, but can't possibly just play.

Kristen Stewart resembles her, and she did a good job in "Into the Wild", so she's certainly not the worst person they could cast for the job.

    Ace's picture

    Katherine Moennig

I could theoretically see her in the role if it was just a Joan Jett biopic that was going to span a greater amount of time. But this is a Runaways biopic. I believe Joan Jett was a teenager for the entire run of the band, so I'm glad their going with actors who are still teenagers.

...K.S. is tha shizknitt-ed sweater [*yerp*]! i've read a few blog postings (not on afterellen, mind you) about her role in 'Twilight' that were just mean and truly uncalled for. By all accounts, the movie did sukk but i attribute that to poor writing-mostly...K.S. is stoopid sexy and she does look like Kate M. and a little like Joan too; i can't wait for this flick. She was awesome in 'Panic Room' and fantastic in 'Into the Wild' and i know she'll rokk in this role as well. She's bad ass and has style up the bunghole-not to mention that she's got that baby dyke thing going on anyway. Check out some of her interviews, she's so damn awkward, it's adorable

    So, basically...

I fell in love with Kristen Stewart the first moment I saw her.  I haven't seen many of her movies, but she did an amazing job in "Into the Wild."  It's a great movie.  If you haven't seen it, you definitely need to.  Her role didn't last throughout the entire film, but she definitely had an important part and did it well.  I am totally on board with this.  Can't wait to see the end result!
