Choosing Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett or Jennifer Aniston over the holiday

When you think Christmas, do you think major religious holiday or big bucket of popcorn? I’m a movie-on-Christmas girl, so I’ve been checking out this year’s big Christmas releases. And I have to say, I wish I was a little more excited about them.

In this soft economy, Hollywood executives are probably hoping for a repeat of Christmas day last year, when moviegoers spent $9.5 million on Alien v. Predator — Requiem. Or they’d really love a replay of 2004 when Christmas celebrants spent $19.5 million on Meet the Fockers. (Because nothing says Christmas like an exploding RV toilet.)

This year’s crop doesn’t give us alien showdowns or mismatched family wackiness, but we do have some dogs and Nazis. So let’s take a look at the offerings to assess what’s worth seeing.

Marley & Me

Marley & Me gives us Jennifer Aniston and a really cute lab puppy (played, of course, by approximately a zillion puppies) that grows into a beautiful dog. The dog is difficult, but the family learns lessons about life and love and loss. And Kathleen Turner is in it, so how bad can it be?

According to the reviews, it could be pretty bad. However, as a newlywed with a difficult dog — who is snoring as I write this — I can relate, and might see it for that reason alone.

Bedtime Stories

Adam Sandler tells bedtime stories to his sister’s kids and the next day the stories come true … in some form or another. Hilarity ensues. (The hilarity, btw, includes Adam Sandler spraying a store clerk in the face with some type of Christmas tree aerosol and, in a different scene, getting kicked in the shin by an angry dwarf.)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald story, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is the story of a man who lives his life backward. Ultimately there are lessons to be learned about understanding life in retrospect and living in the moment. Blah, blah, blah … but all I keep thinking is that it’s really just the story of Mearth, Mork and Mindy’s half-Orkan son.

There’s really only one thing drawing me to the movie — the cast. First, it co-stars Cate Blanchett, and I would pretty much watch her onscreen reading the phone book for two hours. And then it features Tilda Swinton and Julia Ormond, so not interested vs. really amazing cast.

The Spirit

This is a movie version of a graphic novel about a dead cop who comes back to life as “The Spirit” to clean up his city. I don’t really get it. But as StuntDouble recently noted, the movie is full of femme fatales — and prominently features Sarah Paulson as Ellen Dolan, “the whip-smart girl next door,” which is pretty much how I describe my ideal woman.

So, even though I’m not a graphic-novel person and this is pretty much getting panned all around, it might be a winner in my book.

Valkyrie

There’s nothing like a good Nazi movie for the holidays, I always say. Valkyrie, the Nazi movie in question, is the story of Major Claus von Stauffenberg and the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. It’s interesting history and chock-full of action and adventure and Tom Cruise. It’s tricky to make an action/suspense movie compelling when you know it ends depressingly, so I’m curious to see how well they did it. But there’s still Tom Cruise.

Revolutionary Road

Finally, there’s Revolutionary Road, which opens the day after Christmas and reunites Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio as a middle-class suburban married couple living lives of quiet desperation.

Leonardo DiCaprio always seems like a teenager pretending to be a man to me. But Kate Winslet is another one that I could watch for two hours reading the phone book. (Perhaps she and Cate Blanchett should make a movie in which they read the phone book to each other.) I suspect this is the best movie of the lot, but I’d still like to be more excited about it.

So, we have six vaguely underwhelming Christmas movies peppered with some fantastic actors. Ergo, I’m going to give them all a miss on Christmas and will go see Doubt, instead.

What about the rest of you? Are you more excited about any of these than I am?

    The K(C)ate's Have It

I wouldn't say I'm excited about any of these, but Benjamin Button and Revolutionary Road stand miles above the others. Give me the K(C)ate's over Aniston any day.

    easy

Kate Winslet, anytime! Maybe it's the obssesed-with-KateWinslet lesbian in me talking right now, ok i take it but she's not only BEAUTIFUL but also a very good actress, so.
i think i will end up watching The Curious Case of Benjamin Button as well, the plot sounds interesting.

I agree. Leo always seems to have that teenager quality about him. However, I heard a review that said it was Kate's performance that actually brought him to another level in this film. I think I'll check it out!

    Maybe choose Meryl

I am really excited about Revolutionary Road but that doesn't open until January for much of the country.  For Christmas Day releases, my family is deciding between Doubt and Benjamin Button, but I'm still trying to convince them that Frost/Nixon would be holiday fun!

I still think of DiCaprio as a teen when I see him (he's got that cute babyface) but I think he's quite a good actor, and generally chooses great movies.  10 years ago this week Titanic was released.  Who would have really thought Leo was more than a teen hearttrob?

    Kate vs. Cate...

I love Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett, I too would gladly pay 10 bucks or more to see them read the phone book to each other (and maybe more than that).  I will be going to see "Milk", "Revolutionary Road", "Doubt", and "The Reader".

The crop of Christmas movies this year is unexciting and paltry, but then, there's always the Internet and DVDs.

    I'm torn between these 3

I want to see Marley and Me because I read the book and I loved it this <------------> much.  I want to see Revolutionary Road because it has Kate winslet in it, and of course I want to see it, gosh.  I also want to see The Curious Case of Benjamin Button becuase it just looks like an interesting movie, and that kind of stuff just draws me in.

Well, I still don't know which one I'm going to see, but it will come to me probably when I'm about to walk up to the window. :)

My Xmas tradition is watching "Mixed Nuts", "A Christmas Story" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" (which usually morphs into a marathon of all the National Lampoon vacation movies) at home.

    But... "The Spirit" looks good.

    Button and Milk

I saw "Benjamin Button" yesterday with two of my sisters and we all really liked it.  I agree about bringing the tissues!  The entire cast is fantastic and Cate Blanchett is so beautiful in it.  Well, I guess she always looks beautiful to me :)

I saw "Milk" a week before Christmas and really liked that as well.  It shows how far we've come in gay rights but also how little in some ways.  Certainly very timely.

I'm looking forward to "I Can't Think Straight" but have no idea when it will open in Chicago.

Happy movie-going and Happy New Year, everyone!

    Kate all the way...

Mmm...been looking forward to a Kate Winslet Christmas with The Reader and Revolutionary Road. I could care less about lame looking films like Marley and Me but unfortunately might have to see Bedtime Stories just for Lucy Lawless...ah, the things we do for fandom! :D

    Marley and me!!!

Oh my gosh, I read the book and I was crying the last 20 pages or something! But if it's already getting bad reviews, I might skip it, I'd hate to ruin the images I got in my head from the book :)

    ORRRR the beautiful Frieda Pinto!

One of the best made films I've ever seen, Slumdog Millionaire is not only a brilliant film but it has the gorgeous Frieda Pinto in it.  I've never seen a film that can take you through such a wide range of emotions and despite it's intense content you STILL leave the theater smiling, some even laughing. Completely brilliant.

    Marley & Me

I didn't even look at the reviews for Marley & Me because I knew I was going to see it anyway, and why get some one's overly-harsh opinion who I don't know, right?

Well, I loved it, my mom loved it. It was not-as a previous poster stated-a lame movie. It was a very honest, enjoyable, heartwarming movie. It wasn't another Beethoven sequal (do you still call it a sequal after 5 movies?) It was about the impact that one absurdly misbehaved dog had on one real life family, and in fact it is based off of a book that was written by the real owner of Marley, himself.

I recommend this movie to anyone, absolutely, especially if you have raised a dog yourself- but bring tissues if you cry easily. It was an hour and a half of "Hahaha oh yeah I remember when my dog did that" and "awww" and "Wow, my dog doesn't seem to bad now" I most of all enjoyed coming out of the theatre feeling content and moved and then coming home to give my own dog and giving her a big big hug and actually, just this time, letting her kiss me- I didn't care, this movie made me love my dog and appreciate her even more.

That's my schpeel. Sorry it was so long. I don't mean to be another critic...

Oh another note: I want very badly to see all THREE movies, but alas, I haven't the money. *sigh* Well, I'm off to rob another 7-11.

    I accidentally went to watch

I accidentally went to watch Marley & Me, because my work place organized a movie outing, and it's free. Not my type of movie, usually, but I just wanted to have a light fun in this gloomy season. It was about a dog, so unlikely to rub me the wrong way, I thought. Well, I was not disappointed.

There are a lot of things in this movie about "real" life (because it's based on a true story) and I am quite struck by the love the young couple maintained towards this hilarious dog (MY, he's beyond wicked). Sure, dogs love people unconditionally, that's beautiful, but this dog was just uncontrollable, putting a lot of strain on their life. Yet, they didn't give up on him. I also liked the husband's personality.

It was a full display of what my life is so not about. I knew it, but what can I do? That's mainstream America..... The cynical me aside, I recommend this movie to those who'd like to feel good.

    im such a sucker...

for movies like marley and me. i really really want to hate it, mostly cause im not a big jen aniston or owen wilson fan, but i know im going to see it, bawl like a baby, and recommend it to everyone i know. =) dying to see revolutionary road and the spirit, though. kate winslet is one of my faves, and i love frank miller so i cant wait to see the spirit. oh, and benjamin button looks heartbreaking and fabulous. the short story is awesome (read it here: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~Hyper/Fitzgerald/jazz/benjamin/benjamin1.htm), and the trailer looks really good.

    How about Taraji P. Henson.

She is who I went to see this weekend.

And she was incredible.  I was truly impressed with The Curious Case ...  It's worth checking out.

Going to see Doubt tonight. Meryl looks fierce in this one!!!

    Cate Won By Default

A male friend and I wanted to go see Rev Road but it was only playing at 1 theater in Manhattan and the subway was kinda effed up so we wound up seeing Benjamin. Let me just say that Brad Pitt is very good in this. He trumps Cruise any day.

I prefer my Nazi info in documentary form, thank you very much. And I certainly don't want to see TC as a "good" Nazi.

Cate was very good, as always but her character seemed pretty distant to me. But that's just me. Yeah, Taraji was incredible! She's a keeper. Alas, she will probably be just another on a long list of excellent minority actresses who will never make it "big" in "mainstream" pictures. That has to change. Gabrielle Union was very good in Cadillac Records, but she was relegated to the put upon wife role.  But she hit it out of the park, for sure.

For me Winslet is just about my favorite actress, and I love a lot of other excellent actresses out there. Can't wait to see her film.

I like Aniston a lot. I think she's underrated. But I think I'll probably save my money and wait till cable or dvd rental.

Valkyrie is so at the top of my list to see. As soon as I saw the previews I was like "OMG I'm seeing that!!" I haven't gotten around to going yet, mostly cuz i have no car but I'll get to it eventually. My 2nd pick would be Bedtime Stories, mostly because my brothers drilled Adam Sandler, Jim Carey, and Will Farrel as the funniest guys ever into my brain.

    I'm really excited

First of all, I'm super excited about Benjamin Button, I'm confident it'll be amazing because of the fantastic cast (Cate and Brad), and the trailer. Plus, the music on the website (http://benjaminbutton.com) - I CANNOT get tired of it! Gotta find out who's the composer. Brilliant! ... The movie hasn't come out in Sweden yet, so I'm gonna have to wait like three weeks, which suuuucks!!

Marley & Me has gotten really good reviews, and Owen and Jennifer seem to have a good chemistry. They're both more or less comedic geniuses anyway, so...

Also, The Spirit is a must-see for me cause I love Sin City. (It's the same director, Frank Miller) This movie will RULE!

In conclusion, I think you're wrong about a lot of things (except the worshipping of Cate Blanchett), this has been a great year and a great holiday for movies!!

    BRAD PITT ALL THE WAY

This movie was awesome, I just finished watching it. Probably the best movie I've seen all year- aside from Milk, oh and the Dark Knight.  Everyone in this film was amazing, the story riveting, and there are definitely moments where the lump in your throat comes up.
