What Simone Lahbib wants

It's not a big revelation to say Simone Lahbib is a favorite in these parts.

We know a fair amount about the characters Simone plays and what they want. For example, you may know that Detective Inspector Alex Fielding (Wire in the Blood) wants to catch the bad guy and be a good mum to her son.

And we all know what Helen Stewart wanted:

(You can read the Bad Girls recaps for specifics.)

But that doesn't tell us what Simone wants. Well, here it is: What Simone wants right now is for you to see her brother Stephen's band, Mama Mayhem, play at the Whiskey-a-Go-Go on L.A.'s Sunset Strip on November 8.

Tickets for the show are almost sold out, but you can still buy them here. (And if you cannot catch them at the Whiskey on Nov. 8, you can still catch them at the Cat Club on Nov. 10 or the Roxy on Nov. 11.)

Stephen's a self-taught guitarist — he first picked up a guitar that Simone had bought but didn't use — and Simone is more than a little impressed by her little brother's talent. She recently told AfterEllen.com:

“Stephen started writing songs almost as soon as he learned his first chords — his talent took us all by surprise. I remember in the early days, my mum and I listening at the bottom of the stairs as he worked on some new material, grinning excitedly at each other, like a couple of school-girl groupies!”

Simone said Stephen would often try out his new songs on her and the rest of the family.

“I remember one time, my mum and one of my sisters was there and Stephen was right into one of his songs. He has such a distinctive voice that gives power and emotion to those beautiful lyrics ... The chord shifted and I was head to toe in goosebumps. I watched him, my wee brother, and all previous perceptions fell away. It was like seeing him for the first time as a man, a musician, an artist — this cool, good-lookin' young guy, doing what he loves most ... and he shone. I had no doubt he was going to be good for a tap one day!”

Can't you just hear her calling him “my wee brother”? (And “tap” is Scottish for “loan,” by the way.)

Supporting and respecting Stephen's music is not just something Simone wants us to do; she's out there supporting him, too. In fact, she let Mama Mayhem provide the soundtrack for the happiest day of her life — and the band was a hit. “Everyone I love in one room, loose and rocking out to my brother's music. It was an amazing night,” she says.

Unfortunately, Simone won't be able to provide that level of support to her brother next week. She says, “I'm gutted that I won't be there to see Mama Mayhem play their first gigs in the states and to go party with them after. It would have been great to meet a few U.S. fans of Bad Girls too, and see if they're just as crazy and fun as fans in the U.K. and South Africa.” Instead of being at the shows, Simone has to be in the U.K. to prepare for the next season of Wire in the Blood. (Sorry if you heard rumors to the contrary.)

One positive note: Those of us in New York might — and I emphasize might — have a chance to see both Simone and the band in New York in the spring. She said, "There's a good chance there's going to be a New York mini-tour next year around May. If that comes off, I'll do absolutely everything I can to get there!" [Note to Simone — We hope you're successful!]

For more information about Mama Mayhem, check out their MySpace page for songs and news. Here's a video (Stephen is on vocals):

And here's another picture of Simone, just because she's pretty.

If I still lived in Los Angeles, I'd go — both for the music and for the cheap thrill of doing what Simone Lahbib wants. And, in all fairness, I kind of owe her: Series 2 and 3 of Bad Girls kept me company when I was recuperating from surgery a while back. So, it would be the least I can do.

I'll leave you with Simone's words about what it's like to see Stephen and the rest of Mama Mayhem live:

“I went to see them play Barfly in Glasgow recently. I couldn't believe how much the band and the music had grown. They came on stage and literally blew me away. They rocked! In a true classic-rock, melt-your-woofers, rock-out sense! I just know they are going to take the States by storm. They've worked so hard, they deserve it.”

    Hm.

Not bad. Just listening to the band they remind me a wee bit of a mix between Oasis and Placebo :)

Simone still looks fit. Very fit... I still fancy a bit of her.

    brotherly love

good luck to Stephen and the rest of Mama Mayhem - having a sister with talent like Simone Lahbib, i'd venture he'll do well!

and as for calling him her 'wee brother', that's definitely a term of affection - i do the same with mine, even though i'm 39, he's almost 35, a father, and a department head at a Scottish university!  i my mind, he's still a wee blond-haired boy who was daft about Star Wars....

    Phew...

The travel Goddesses are looking out for me. I seriously considered a trip to LA that week to stalk see Simone. LOL NYC will work way better for me. That is if I can fight my way past Scribe Grrrl.

    NYC

I hope she can pull off the NY Thing - I might have to go there then!  Tease - We'll just have to restrain Scribe Grrrl.  I really wish I could see the LA thing, but NY would be closer to home.

You may relate to Ms. Lahbib

You may relate to Ms. Lahbib that the american fans are just as...shall we say enthusiastic as any others. The first three notable seasons of that series, due in large part to her extraordinary performance as Helen Stewart, are dear to the hearts of the women who frequent this forum. And, beyond that, as a connoussieur of british acting all my life (and theater major in college) I'd watch her in anything. She's simply one of the best actresses currently working on british tv and I'm delighted she's in another class production with WitB.

I'm also enjoying what I've heard of her brother's band and have gone to the websites of Craig Ferguson, Leno, Conan, Ellen and written emails (most of the chat show sites have an email form specifically for Musical Guest you'd like to see on the show) in favor of having the band appear. Just a suggestion, if you'd like to do likewise.

    sounds good

I kinda like that style of music! And I'm sooo happy to hear that she's going to be in another season of WitB. I just wasn't sure after the end of series 5, but I'm super excited she's going to be back!!!

    WITB

I'm slow here - what season did Simone join WITB cast - I think their only showing like season 1 or 2 on American TV - am I right in that belief?  I will have to get it from amazon.UK - Please let me know.

OH - BTW - does anyone know the name of the movie she was in just shortly after Bad Girls?

    bacchae's picture

    I assume you mean

"Heartless" ? (Someone posted a thread about it here on AE http://www.afterellen.com/node/25711#comment-406453 )  Which was filmed on the island of Skye (also the name of Simone's daughter.) It's available on u.k. dvd or you can find it online here or there. And as far as I know, since I don't get BBC-A, "Wire in the Blood" has aired through season 4 (when Simone took over) and season 5 has aired in britain and should be airing here soon as well (if it hasn't already.) Only series 1-3 are available currently on U.S. dvds.

    Thanks!

I couldn't remember the name.  So WITB is running current on US  BBC.  I'll have to check it out.  I finally got a region free DVD(with a little programmer help) player so I am buying my shows right from amazon UK.  I love the uncut versions and all the extras that are available!!

I'll look up the movie next time I order.

I'm rewatching series 1 now and loving all that I missed the first time around!!

    WITB

Got my WITB series 4 this week and just rewatched the first two episodes last night. I never get tired of watching Simone and not just because she is gorgeous. WITB series 5 has not shown on BBC America yet. Series 5 episode 2 has some incredible acting by Simone, so everybody keep on the look out for when it starts up on BBC America. I hope Simone makes it to NY so afterellen will give us another great interview because some of us can never get enough of this wonderful woman.

    Because you're a cheeky

Because you're a cheeky minx. With a great sense of humor. Or maybe because you're not the kind of person to follow the whims of someone, just because she's on TV? Although, neither am I. Since I live in the greater LA area, and I'm not going.

    Great sound!

I wish I could see them in LA. I loved his voice and the band rocked! I will go when they're here in NYC, even without Simone ... but how sweet would that be to actually see her!!! Moe in Brooklyn

    Two questions:

    1. Aren't these concerts over yet?

    2. Hasn't AfterEllen already repaid Simone Lahbib for the interview?
