Teresa Palmer: the new Wonder Woman?

As the linster blogged about a month ago, rumors about the casting of Wonder Woman in George Miller's upcoming Justice League movie are all over the blogosphere. Lucy Lawless, Victoria Hill and Jessica Biel have all been bandied about (and discarded) as possible heirs to the Lasso of Truth. Well, the latest name out there is Teresa Palmer, star of ... well, nothing, really, thus far.

OK, that wasn't really fair. It depends on where you live. Palmer is relatively unknown in the United States, although she did appear in The Grudge 2 with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Beals:

But Palmer has definitely made a name for herself in her native Australia. She was even nominated for an Australian Film Institute award for her work in Murali K. Thuralli's 2:37.

And in December Boys, she earned the distinction of being the first actress to have a love scene with Daniel Radcliffe.

According to an anonymous friend of Palmer's, the Justice League crew will be fitting her for a black wig rather than dying her hair. But there is precedent for a blonde Wonder Woman.

That was back in 1974. A pre–That's Incredible Cathy Lee Crosby was the original TV Wonder Woman. She was blonde, not to mention a little more conservatively dressed than Lynda Carter was two years later.

The traditional Justice League image of Wonder Woman does, of course, have black hair.

And apparently, she has a body that's even more distorted than a Barbie doll's. Look at those legs!

Of course, in true Wonder Woman gossip mill style, a new rumor has been reported since I began writing this post.

The latest, according to Moviehole.net, is that Megan Gale has been short-listed for the role. But the Daily Telegraph blurb that was the source of the Moviehole gossip misspelled Jessica Biel's name. So I'm not giving it too much credence. This blurb also indicates that an official announcement is due Tuesday. So I guess we'll see then.

Whomever they eventually cast, I'm just hoping the movie will bring back my favorite Wonder Woman character, Wonder Girl (played by Debra Winger in the '70s TV series).

    More Girl than Woman

She looks a little too young to me, I guess the only way to know for sure would be to test how well she deflects bullets with only a couple of armbands or, failing that, I'd have to see how well she twirls that lasso in nothing but a glorified bathing suit *sorry* her costume ;-D.

    Well, I know I've always

Well, I know I've always pictured Wonder Woman as a blonde, slightly walleyed, 16 year old.  Pfft.

    why?

Must our heroines be young and wispy and helpless-looking, while our heroes are always substantial, brawny, and mature? Come on, Hollywood! Why not give the role to a WOMAN with muscles? Substance? Maturity? Even though Jessica Biel's young, she could still play a credible Wonder Woman because she looks like she could crush my hand when she shakes it. What are these producers/casting directors smoking? I like my Wonder Woman tall, dark, mature, and cunning. She's a fighter, a hero, for crying out loud. She's not a girl. Yes, there are plenty of heroes that are girls; some of my favorite heroes are young women (Buffy, Alanna, Batgirl, Lyra, etc.). But Wonder Woman is otherwordly, and they should get someone with stature, maturity, and visible physical strength to play her because that's how the character has (nearly) always been portrayed in the comics.

    Teresa

Anyone who thinks Teresa has no substance obviously hasn't seen her in 2:37. Sure she may seem blonde and wispy but in her Australian roles she has acted with maturity and in 2:37 with frightening toughness also. I'm sure 2:37 didn't make it to your American shores, it was a low-budget movie written and directed by one of my friends' brothers here in Adelaide. If you can find it anywhere its definately worth watching...

    2:37

Unfortunately, it does not seem readily available in the states, but I'll keep an eye out for it. I did, however, just add The December Boys to my Netflix queue. I'll watch it when it comes out in December.

    triple ugh.

Lucy Lawless would be a GREAT Wonder Woman. In fact, I'm reading on IMDb that she's doing the voice for the animated version to be released in 2008?

So are they going to make the movie with Hawk Girl, Black Canary and Vixen as well? That's probably too much to ask - multiple female heroes in the same film ... X-Men would have been the most awesome movie series had they made Rogue who she SHOULD have been ... a mature, adult, ass-kicking Southern Sass-pot. Instead, we got Anna Paquin. It makes my brain hurt ...

If we ignore it now, will it just not get made?

Oh God, this movie is going to be awful.

    a clarification

I'm not saying that teresa's not a fine actress. To be honest, I haven't seen her in anything, so I can't judge. I'm sure she has portrayed many characters with depth, grit, and emotion. However, what I am saying is that I don't think her age or build are suitable for this role, for the role of Wonder Woman, unless this Wonder Woman is fourteen and just coming into her powers. And even if that was the case, I'd still like someone with a little muscle and stature to her.
