Piper Perabo explores “reasons to be pretty”

Earlier this week, after noting that two actresses reasonably well-known for playing lesbian and bisexual characters would be playing two of the three flight attendants in the upcoming Broadway revival of Boeing-Boeing, I speculated that Piper Perabo, who’s also known in certain circles for her lesbian and bisexual roles, might play the third.

Now, I was just picking her name out of the air because I associate her with lesbian/bi roles. But it turns out she was not such a bad pick because she will, in fact, be on the New York stage in just a few months time! (Thanks, BQ, for that tip.)

Perabo will not be joining Gina Gershon and Mary McCormack on Broadway, but she will be starring in the Neil Labute’s reasons to be pretty at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The show is set to open June 2 and run until July 15.

The show is described as follows: "Greg's tight-knit social circle is thrown into turmoil when his offhanded remarks about a female coworker's pretty face (and his girlfriend's lack thereof) get back to said girlfriend."

I’m guessing that Perabo is going to play the pretty co-worker. Because she’s pretty. The other actress is cast is Allison Pill, who’s not exactly ugly. (She does however, look about 14, even though she’s 23.)

When I searched for a picture of Pill to see who she was, I realized that she looked very familiar, and I was associating her with something lesbian. Then I got it! She played the daughter of a lesbian in one of my favorite Lifetime (Television for Women) movies, An Unexpected Love. Leslie Hope (24) played her suburban mother who came out when she fell in love with Wendy Crewson, who played the mother of a lesbian in Better Than Chocolate. (It’s such a lesbian-interconnected world.) Pill also co-starred with Mariska Hargitay in another Lifetime movie, The Plain Truth.

I’ve never seen a LaBute play, but a theater critic acquaintance of mine loved LaBute's The Shape of Things and Fat Pig, both of which dealt with similar themes. (However, he hated LaBute’s recent L.A. production of Some Girls.) So, I have no idea how good this will be. But seeing Piper Perabo onstage seems like it could be fun.

    Confessions-

I remember seeing Pill as Ella in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Lindsey Lohan.

I have to agree with you Ally.. Piper poured her way into my heart in Coyote Ugly!! She's a very gifted actress and I can't wait to see her on stage.

    Neil LaBute ...

Is awesome. "Bash a Gaggle of Saints" is one of my favorite pieces - theatrical, edgy, intense ....

I cannot say the same for Piper Perabo, however. Go on ... flame me away......

    Well ...

I could also flame you for improperly quoting Shakespeare ..... but isn't it nice to know that everyone is not the same?

    ;)

It's Cleopatra's line from Antony and Cleopatra .... that's where they got it from in the movie .... so it's really the movie's fault ... not yours. ;)

No harm, no fowl. No flame guard needed.

    ...

    You're welcome.

LaBute is known for creating misogynistic stories/characters so he may not be the most popular playwright around here, but he is noteworthy.

I enjoy Piper, but am scared as to how she'll do on stage. It's an awfully high profile play for her to make her NY stage debut in.

    I don't think ...

Neil LaBute is "known" for creating misogynistic stories/characters .... I think he's more known for his darkness and unsettling depictions of human beings and their relationships.

He does write about misogyny .... but that's just it .... he writes about it to make a point. Which is maybe what you're saying, but the phrasing of "known for creating misogynistic stories/characters" makes it sound like he creates these characters who end up being misogynistic, rather the fact that he creates them on purpose ... as a fact that there are misogynistic people in the world, and this is the harm they cause.

And I am also nervous that Piper Perabo is in this play ... but then again, I may just be bias against Piper Perabo.

    allison pill needs some love!

:loves piper perabo: but i also love allison pill. she is awesome onstage, and totally worth seeing wherever she may roam. she ruled in Mauritius. she looks older in person, although she is very very petite.

misfortune led me to "Some Girls" in London with David Schwimmer. And he was terrible. The play wasn't all that awesome either.

still, if allison pill is onstage, i'm there. despite worries over labute.

    awesome piper news!

i may have to  hit new york this summer after all. btw, allison pill is also in one of my favorite flicks, she plays katie holmes' little sister in "pieces of april" and she's great in it.
