News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

The hottest concert ticket right now is ... Hannah Montana?

If you hadn't read the title of this post, and you were asked to identify the hottest concert ticket this fall, what would you guess? Bruce Springsteen? Annie Lennox? The Police? (I would have picked Springsteen, but that's a personal bias.) If you picked any of the above, you and I would both be wrong. The hot ticket is Disney Channel tween sensation Hannah Montana. Or, more specifically, the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus — Best of Both Worlds Tour.

Tickets for the 54-date tour have sold out in as few as 4 minutes. As insane as this is, it seems to be part of a larger trend based on pre-registering on the Internet for tickets. The first show of the Spice Girls reunion tour sold out in 38 seconds. (Thank you, Jamie, for this tidbit!) Consequently, ticket brokers are having a field day. The face value of the tickets was capped at $65, but the average resale price is $214 (compare to that Justin Timberlake at $182 and Beyoncé at $193). Out of curiosity, I checked StubHub for tickets at the venue closest to me and found a low price of $173 for nosesbleed seats and a high price of $4,500 for floor seats. That's $4,500. For Hannah Montana tickets. I know people who paid less than that for Super Bowl tickets!

I've managed to stay pretty oblivious to the Hannah Montana phenomenon. Intrigued by the story, I learned that Disney character of Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana is a transplant from the middle of the country to California — sort of a younger Spencer Carlin who is not a lesbian, but who is a secret pop star. She's played by Miley Cyrus , real-life and television daughter of achy-breaky daddy Billy Ray Cyrus.

She also has a Jenna Von Oy-esque best friend, an annoying older brother, a male friend and an annoying would-be suitor who reminds me a little bit of a Latino Mason Reese.

The show includes vignettes of Miley's regular life — sometimes with the occasional song and dance number.

(This brings me right back to Potsie's "Pumps Your Blood" from Happy Days.)

Then there are the Hannah Montana concert clips.

Did you note the rocker chick guitarist?

All in all, it's pretty wholesome entertainment. And apparently, tweens are the audience to market to these days. Today's New York Times explores the role of tweens in driving Broadway ticket sales! So, if you managed to get your hands on some Hannah Montana tickets and are heartless enough to scalp to children, you can make a killing.

    Disney, Disney, Disney

It is everywhere. My kids love this show. I am not telling them about the concert. In fact, I am not even going to be in this thread if they walk in the room. I will open a new tab on the browser so I can click away from it, lest I end up having to take them to this show.

    Kay Hanley <3

One of my all time favourite badass rockers is going on this tour to sing backing vocals.

    Yes. I kid you not.

Kay Hanley, formely of Letters to Cleo, is going on a tour with Hannah Montana.

And what does she say about it?

"In other news, I am going on tour with Hannah Montana as a back-up singer.
I shit you not. Rehearsals start next week and we hit the road on 10.12.07.
Stacy & Jamie A. are in the band so it will be super dee duper. Don't judge
    - I know you want her autograph."

    Oh, Kay... *giggles*

    Never seen it

I've never seen the show or anything, but I feel bad for the kids who can't see her live b/c the tickets are so expensive (and not many tickets available to the public). I remember all the times my Mom sat online at Ticketmaster at 10am on Saturday mornings ready to buy me tickets to a number of "hot" shows - and ending up with non-floor seats and such. It's frustrating.

Speaking of shows selling out real fast, have you heard about the Spice Girls selling out London in 38 seconds? Just thought I'd throw that in there lol A ticket that sold faster than Hannah! haha

    I tried

and failed to get tickets to Hannah Montana.   Twas an impossible task.

    OMG....

My friend's 12 year-old sister wants to see that...personally, I think it's pathetic...for a twelve year old to go see Hannah Montanna...

    imallthumbs's picture

    I don't know, maybe I'd take

I don't know, maybe I'd take this comment to heart if it didn't begin with an "OMG." I'd go with my 8 year old brother to see it AND I'd probably enjoy it.

    Wrong target audience, surely...?!

Sorry to sound snippy, but do AE readers really care about a 14 year old singer ?!?! WTF!

....Unless you're a little girl aged between 8- 12 years old, in which case honey, you really shouldn't be on this site...at least for a few more years :)

Cyberspace is already chock full with way too much information as it is, so I would prefer not to fill my poor aging brain with trivia I could certainly do without!

    Thank you.

    hey! come on..

some of us have little sisters, nieces, etc.. some have kids.. point is, it's a free site (i think..) so we can talk/post about pretty much anything..

i mean, i'd rather take my niece to a MUSE concert, but that's a little innapropiate (not sure i spelled that one right)..

    *peace!*

    then again..

there is a whole lot of more important stuff we could talk/post about

    :)

The Blogger has the discretion here

First off, there may well be younger readers who are actually fans of Hannah Montana. (If older ones are fans, well... let's hope their thoughts are clean).

Second, the blogger is making a point about which shows are hot at the moment. Today's Hannah Montana may well be tomorrow's Britney Spears (she started on Disney too, remember).  The later is certainly a subject of discussion elsewhere on these boards.

Obviously AE readers do have some interest, as there have been a number of replies in this thread. It would not be fair to discriminate on the subject matter merely on the basis of the subject's age. If that were the case, one could argue that it is not likely there are many women on this forum over the age of 80, and therefore, we should not discuss women over that age.

Had the blogger chosen something completely arbitrary and off the map (like say, dryer lint), you might have an argument. But I think we (meaning the readers here) can allow some leeway where a blog is concerned.

    Isn't that the former

Isn't that the former drummer of Uh Huh Her (Leisha Hailey's band)? Did she leave the band to make a bunch of money on a Hannah Montana tour?

I would've. If there wasn't Leisha Hailey involved.

    The Drummer Girl

That's Alicia Warrington. She's formerly of Kelly Osbourne, Lillix and UH HUH HER. I believe she did 'Hannah' before she did 'UH HUH'. She's not on tour with Hannah Montana, she does the concert clips/videos for the show.

So don't ask her for tickets. haha. She's mad at people for asking her for tickets.

    Hate Disney

If my kids were still young enough, we'd actually picket this stuff. But now they've gone on and developed personalities and shit, and it's just not the same telling them what they should hate. See, this is why the "hating Christians" won't succeed either. No matter what the kid will reject you. Unless you're Amish.
    twilight_vision's picture

hey now, you shouldnt hate anything...

    especially not disney!!

i love hannah montana and would pay ridiculous sums to see her in concert. and yes, im nearly 18 years old and the fact that i have a soft spot for disney channel doesnt bother me in the least. my best friend and i have sleepover nights where we buy princess tiaras and watch hercules on DVD. immature, maybe. but its all kinds of fun. and hey, my passion for hannah and the fact that i could talk about her for days bought me an in with my now ex-girlfriend's little sister.

so all you hannah-haters who think AE is not the place for musings on her concert, just try not to judge.

    Would have picked Annie Lennox

Don´t know anything about the other people/things mentioned in the thread (except for Bruce and the Police).

If I lived in the US, I would tour with Annie. Seriously. I can´t even buy her new album, which was due for release on this Monday but for some odd reason will be sold in Germany only starting from Thursday. Have to wait another 25 hours *cries impatiently*.

    my sister...

is obsessed with anything disney, especially hannah. its horrible, but shes only 9. so i guess i should support this for another month or two. then ill have to snap her out of it.

    I so want to go!!!

I love the show (and pretty much everything else on Disney), mainly cos it's so cheesy. And Billy Ray Cyrus is so bad that he just makes me laugh.

I think if I remember rightly from Hannah Montana Live in London, the rock chick guitarist is Miley's big sister. I guess that's one way for her parents to make sure she's supervised

    I admit

I watch Hannah Montana. I know ,I know, I am twice this girls age. I work with kids and started watching it with them. So I told myself that I would "bond" with my kids and went home to TiVo the season.

It's funny in a cute, harmless way. I used to watch Lizzie McGuire too. What can I say? It's nice to have brain fluff sometimes.

    New Lizzie

I was OBSESSED with Lizzie McGuire and was devastated when it finished, so I began watching Hannah Montana to fulfill my cravings for badly written, overly cutesy American tween shows. It's a bit of harmless fun that brings a smile to my face.

Doesn't surprise me that Hannah Montana sold so quickly, she's RAD!

    RavenNation's picture

    Spice Girls

I'm so psyched about the Spice Girls tour.  I signed up on their website for the chance to get pre sale tickets, and they picked me.  The cheapest ones are like $70 though.  Still, I wanna see them in LA, so I'm gonna get me a ticket.  With the parking fee and search fee from ticket master, it's gonna be like $103 though.  I know the LA ones haven't sold out yet, but you have to have a presale password to get any of the U.S. tickets right now.  Seriously though, if you want tickets, get them as soon as you possibly can.  All the presale people can buy up to 6, so there might not be many left, if any at all when the actual sale for everyone else starts.

Hannah Montana can be pretty entertaining if you looking for a quick laugh.  I used to watch it when I was bored.  Of course, that was back when I actually had a TV, so I don't watch the show anymore.  Ah well, doesn't bother me.

I think I'll go watch Spice World now.  My favorite part of the movie is when they meet the aliens.  Aliens exist!

    Spice Girls

Hey, I just got my tickets last night for the London show and I am totally delerious, I don't care that all my friends think I am sad!!

The Brits always seem to get ripped off though, with the current exchange rate, our cheapest tickets would cost you over $100.

Oh well, it still didn't stop me from buying the more expensive ones so that I get a good view of the action.  Plus the good seats helped me convince a quite unwilling friend to come with me.....

    This whole ticket thing is

This whole ticket thing is crazy.  I work in an Arena here in Belfast and Bruce Springsteen chose only 2 UK venues for his upcoming world tour, one was London and one was here.  We have 10,000 seats and we sold out in less than 8 minutes with enquiries coming in from all over Europe and even Australia.  Tickets were on ebay in minutes at costs of over £1000.  I can't imagine even paying over £100 for my favourite act, never mind flying thousands of miles plus paying for the ticket.  For that price I would want to meet the star in person and get a private show (take your minds out of the gutter, not that kind of show...well depends on who it is!?!)
I don't get the Hannah Montana thing at all but I was a bit of a Lizzie McGuire fan and I can't even use the excuse of youth, I was in my early 20's watching it!   I also liked the Spice Girls but wouldn't be fussed on seeing them live.  The most expensive I've forked out on was Dolly Parton last year here in Belfast at £75 per ticket, now despite controversy surrounding her lack of big screens and some alleged miming that woman can put on a show!!
