Food, glorious food: Five great food movies

Food is a good thing. That is my profound post-Thanksgiving pronouncement. My mother is an extraordinary, amazing cook — a fact I remember acutely when I visit my parents. By virtue of having grown up in a home with good food, I've continued to appreciate good food all my life. And it's still a connection I share with my mother: I call her when I've had a great meal, when I've cooked something interesting and when I've seen a good food movie.

So, in the spirit of the overeating I've been doing at my parents' home for the past few days, I've been thinking about some of my favorite food movies. These are not all great movies, and they are not necessarily the greatest food movies, but they're all food movies that I've enjoyed, and that came to mind recently.

1. What's Cooking? (2000)

What's Cooking? is the no-brainer. First, we have gay-friendly director Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham). Then there's the mouthwatering multi-ethnic Thanksgiving food prepared by Joan Chen, Mercedes Ruehl, Alfre Woodard, Julianna Margulies and Kyra Sedgwick, among others. Last, and most important, we have Julianna Margulies and Kyra Sedgwick as perhaps the most attractive and appealing lesbian couple in the history of movie lesbians.

Yes, the movie has its flaws. (Every time I watch, I cannot believe the Vietnamese college student tells his parents he's not coming home for Thanksgiving and then goes to his girlfriend's house. Across the street from his parents' house.) But then Julianna Margulies flexes her perfect arms, and she and Kyra Sedgwick giggle over the turkey baster. And all is well in the world.

Take a look at the trailer to remember how sweet and charming the movie is.

2. Waitress (2007)

When a movie review appears in the “Dining and Wine” section of The New York Times, you know food plays a major role. Waitress is the ultimate pie movie. While I could probably expound upon the things the pies represent in the movie, what interests me most is how much the movie made me crave “I Hate My Husband Pie” — among many other types. And I'm not that much of a pie person. (I've always lamented that in my house, Thanksgiving is a pie holiday.) I also left the theater humming, “Baby don't be blue. Gonna make for you. Gonna make a pie with a heart in the middle.”

3. Tortilla Soup (2001)

Tortilla Soup is not a great movie. But the food photography borders on obscene. A Mexican-American take on Ang Lee's Eat Drink Man Woman, Tortilla Soup is the story of a retired chef's relationship with his three adult daughters (Jacqueline Obradors, Tamara Mello and Elizabeth Pena — who will always be “Dora” from I Married Dora to me.) Both the daughters and the food are lovely.

4. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

Food is not as central to Fried Green Tomatoes as it is to the other movies in this list. But the food fight! Director Jon Avnet has acknowledged that it's the symbolic love scene between Idgie Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary-Louise Parker) (Note to Jon Avnet — an actual love scene would have been better.) Regardless, food (via the restaurant) is the key connection between our de-sexualized lovers, and given the physiological link between food and sex, food is not such a bad proxy here.

5. Ratatouille (2007)

I do not like rats. Not even a little bit. And, living in New York, I see them in the subway and in the parks on an unfortunately regular basis. So, when a movie that features a rat as a culinary genius and the de facto head chef of restaurant makes me hungry rather than nauseated, I know that they did the food right. (In all fairness, I did experience a few moments of revulsion.) More than anything, the movie extols virtues and pleasures inherent in cooking and appreciating food. And Janeane Garofalo provides the voice for the only major female character, so that's a bonus.

There are so many other great food movies out there. What are your favorites?

"Under the Tuscan Sun". Great foodie movie because cooking is part the cooking, and part the cooking for someone (anyone, really). That movie really captures it perfectly. Plus Sandra Oh's a lesbian, so what's not to love? I do love me some Diane Lane too :)

    Food-n-films

I loved Eat Drink Man Woman but Babette's Feast has to be my all time favorite food movie. Babette is a woman after my own heart!

    More to the list...

I really enjoyed Bella Martha (2001), this german film is also known as Mostly Martha in the U.S. and the recent film, No Reservations (2007) was based on it. I enjoyed both the original and the remake. Great cooking films, and the remake starts CZJ and Abigail Breslin, so whats not to like!

Of Ace's pics Whats Cooking? and Tortilla Soup are my favorites, that might have something to do with my love of female detectives... Kira Sedgewick in The Closer and Jacqueline Obradors from her NYPD Blue days!

    Ratatouille

I watched that movie a week ago, and I cried.  I really like the message that the movie explores.  That anyone can cook.  Even the culinary challenged like myself.

    Gurinder Chadha isn't a lesbian...

... though I can see how it might be tempting to think so, given how gay-friendly her movies are. But she's actually married to a man called Paul Mayeda Berges (also a filmmaker).

    I love Ratatouille!!!

    Food glorious food...

If it doesn't have to be lesbian themed, how about Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe"?

Or, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" with the great food there. Also, "Moonswept" with Cher, nice Italian food.

My fave you've mentioned tho, is Fried Green Tomatoes......I will never look at ribs again the same way!!!

    Great topic!

I am currently teaching a food and lit/pop culture course, and we just watched What's Cooking? today. It was a toss up among that film, Big Night (a food film standard), and Soul Food. I would much rather watch The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover, but alas, I need to remain in the context of the course. I'm looking forward to seeing what my students have to say about the film!

I'll toss out Like Water for Chocolate, Mystic Pizza, The Joy Luck Club, Chocolate, Fire, Diner, and My Dinner with Andre.

    Willy Wonka and the

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

And of course, Woman on Top starring Penelope Cruz...that movie is just sizzling!

    Como Agua Para Chocolate

    My Favorites would be:

    5. Bella Martha(Mostly Martha---German Version,.. perfectionists unite!)

    4. Amelie(I wonder how many people are having an "O" moment right now...lol)

    3. Eat Drink Man Woman (nice twist at the end :-)  )

    2. Mississippi Masala

1.**** Como Agua Para Chocolate(Like Water For Chocolate *****best food movie ever, and it's a good movie,  too. I wonder if the book's good????

....and the  "leftovers" are Soul Food, The Color Purple, La Buche, The Incredible True Adventures of 2 Girls in Love and  The Mirror Has Two Faces....Now I am completely stuffed.

I liked the book, but I did

I liked the book, but I did like the movie better - perhaps that makes me shallow. Actually, I think it's because I'm not that great with "magical realism" in fiction, but I don't mind it in movies.

But in the book, you get the recipes!!!

    Ratatouille is my favorite

Ratatouille is my favorite movie. I'm real mature. :)

And I guess Chocolat would be another good food (chocolate) movie.

    omg, inbd

    Humm..

I don't cook at all and the only times I've been tempted to learn to cook are after watching: Eat Drink Man Women & Babette's Feast. I remember thinking this is what foods should be and do for people; and I swear I've learned since to appreciate foods on a completely different level. These 2 films are outstanding food movies.

    Ratatouille

I liked Ratatouille, but I didn't the way the only female chef turned from assertive and cool as she was in the beginning to dependent and submissive the second she got into a relationship with the boy. That whole relationship was unnecessary, in fact.

    Big Night,

hands down.  Extra points for Isabella Rossellini!!

    Ratatouille!

I love 'Ratatouille'  'Nina's Heavinly Delights' and 'Whats cooking'

    Erm

"Food is not as central to Fried Green Tomatoes as it is to the other movies in this list."

Well, it's not food porn, but it's certainly central to the plot. Leaving aside the whole basis of the thing being about Ruth and Idgie's roadhouse, what about the "barbeque"? My favourite part of the whole thing.

If you want food porn, you can't go past Tampopo

    notl33t's picture

    Agreed!

Tampopo is probably the best food porn I've ever seen in my life.

I also don't think anyone has yet mentioned No Reservations, which I loved and not just because Abigail Breslin is in it. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart could be a lesbian couple! If I squint just right with the aid of his lesbian haircut, it makes sense. Plus, a happy ending is included. I'm probably more keen on it for the use of music from various operas, but the food is also quite interesting, too.

    Favorite "Food" Movies

    Chocolat-Johnny Depp, Juliette Binoche
    What's Cooking-Kyra Sedgwick, Julianna Margulies
Food For the Heart (aka The Hungry Bachelors Club)-Jorja Fox, Suzanne Mara
    Big Night-Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci
    Like Water For Chocolate
    Babette's Feast-Stephane Audran
    Woman on Top-Penelope Cruz
    Mostly Martha-Martha Klein
Nina's Heavenly Delights-Shelley Conn, Laura Fraser
    Eat Drink Man Woman

and I'll add this one to the list as a sidenote, as I haven't yet seen the movie and the reviews weren't very good and I don't know how much food is involved, but I'd like to see No Reservations simply because it stars Catherine Zeta Jones, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin.

    favorite food movies

That would have to be eat drink man woman. When I first watched it I had not eaten anything for several hours. It was pure torture, actually the best torture ever. I wanted to jumb into the movie when I saw all these fabulous dishes. mhm. My second choice is Bella Martha (Mostly Martha). Gosh, I went to the movies twice to have the pleasure of seeing all the cooking and Martina Gedeck. I actually own the dvd-edition that includes a little booklet with recipes;)
