"Entertainment Weekly" thinks women can be exciting, tooI was flipping through the new issue of Entertainment Weekly over the weekend when I was suddenly startled and alert. I went back, reread, recounted and realized that EW had published a "10 best" music list that featured more women than men! Of "The 10 Most Exciting Artists Now" (or "... Right Now" in the online edition), four are female solo artists, two are bands fronted by women and one has a woman in a prominent, albeit not central, role. The times, they are a-changing. Now, I don't have anything against male recording artists. My CD collection is full of them. I'm going to buy the new Springsteen album the day it's released. And I like exciting new artist No. 5, Josh Ritter. But I get tired of music lists that overwhelmingly recognize the boys, so I'm going to be excited by this list and highlight the many women featured. Let's take a look at them. (And by the way, you can listen to the full-length sample tracks by clicking the link to each song and using the player at the bottom of the EW.com page.) I'm preserving EW's numbering below. 1. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings
I love a band that hyphenates. I had never heard of Sharon Jones (with or without the Dap-Kings), but I listened to the track "It Hurts to Be Alone" and thoroughly enjoyed the classic Motown sound. And from what I read about them, Jones is a woman to be reckoned with. She's 51, grew up in the segregated south and worked as a prison guard at Riker's Island. 2. The DEY
EW says they're exciting because they're "[t]he Black Eyed Peas with a Latin twist." After listening to their song, "No Looking Back," I pretty much agree with that assessment. The sound is certainly similar. But female vocalist Elan Luz Rivera loses major points for her dumb-ass quote in the article. "Spanish is a Romance language. Who doesn't understand romance?" Um, who doesn't understand that "Romance" in this context means "derived from Latin," not "the language of love"? 4. Alice Smith
Alice Smith is described as "a seductive mix of Nina Simone and Alicia Keys." Listen to the track "Dream" and you can see why she warrants that description. Smith's debut album For Lovers, Dreamers & Me (Kermit the Frog, anyone?) will be rereleased shortly on Epic Records. (The original release on an indie label didn't generate many sales. Alas.) 7. New Buffalo
A word to the wise: If you're ever looking for pictures of "New Buffalo," expect to find a lot of maps of Michigan in addition to pictures of Sally Seltmann. Seltmann, aka New Buffalo, has created a body of work merging "the folk and the electronic worlds." Listen to "Versary" to get a sense of how interesting and different she is. 8. Lil Mama
I recall reading about Lil Mama (Niatia Kirkland) in The New York Times last spring when her single "Lip Gloss" became an unexpected hit. (The song didn't do much for me, but I'm not a tween. And I don't wear a lot of lip gloss.) Now her debut album, Voice of the Young People, is about to be released, and EW has dubbed her Best New Female Rapper at the tender age of 17. Check out "Brooklyn" for a sample of her rhymes. 9. Robyn
Do you remember the song "Show Me Love" from 10 years ago? (Not to be confused with the other "Show Me Love" by Robin S. circa 1993.) Well, Robyn is back, and she's all grown up. (She was a teenager back in 1997.) She does, however, sound a bit like a 12-year-old in "Handle Me." The lyrics are interesting, though. I was particularly struck by, "You're a selfish, narcissistic, psycho, freaking boot-licking [something inarticulate] creep, and you can't handle me." She does not mince words. (I just looked up the lyrics, and the inarticulate word is Nazi. EW.com must have censored it.) And is it just me, or does Robyn kind of look like Martha Plimpton in Parenthood?
10. Paramore
I listened to the song "Decoy" and liked what I heard. I love when a song begins with a loud guitar riff followed by a girl singing. (And I can call her a girl. She's only 18!) Apparently, they've created a lot of Internet buzz and had a successful run with the Warped Tour this summer. EW has them pegged as a band to watch. What do you think? Are these the most exciting artists out there right now? Did Entertainment Weekly miss any? Submitted by on September 25, 2007 - 10:59am. |

This list is eclectic, but
This list is eclectic, but I'm just not a fan. Since when is Josh Ritter a new artist? He's been around for quite a bit. I guess new to them means new to the spotlight.
I'd like to see some of my favorite girls get some AMERICAN recognition: Missy Higgins, Tristan Prettyman, Holly Brook (though I think she would've been good for this list as the pseudo Dido in Eminem's Stan for Fort Minor's Where'd you go?), Michelle Featherstone, Lauren Hoffman, even Mandy Moore! People tend to forget Mandy Moore is a singer/songwriter, especially after the whole Candy thing. I saw her in New York a few weeks ago, and she's been touring with Paula Cole and Rachael Yamagata. And her and Rachael have been writing songs together. It's gotta be promising.
I've heard some of these
I've heard some of these artists on the list and not bad from what I heard. I'm a music freak but I have one woman who's voice can really set me on fire. Breathtaking and though she's not around a lot with "Top Music" or "Top 100" she's always been my top everything! Amy Lee of Evanescence. Hand me her on a silver platter any day.
Remember
Remember when Columbia House was huge and if you joined you would get 10 CD's for a cent, you only had to pay shipping and handling? Well, Robyn was one of the CD's I picked when I joined. I'm not sure I should have admitted that but what can I say, the CD was pretty good. Not sure if I like the single that's on the EW site, I'll have to hear more before I give her another shot. I did like Paramore, at least the song that's on the site. Yea it's a bit pop-punk and I really get annoyed with that style of music, the turn on is really the female vocalist. What would normally be a SUM-41 rip off they are more appealing because of her vocals. However, don't take my word for it, I love bands with female leads such as Flyleaf.
Thanks for the review, I really do need to find some new music, I'm getting a little bored with what I have.
"Normal is not something to aspire to, it's something to get away from."
Ace
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this info. I'm a music fanatic and I'm always in the market for new music. The Dey album has now become a "must have" for me. The description given to this group is definitely meritorious. For all who like the sound of The Dey, I would definitely recommend Paula DeAnda's debut album which is self titled. The Dey is featured on the Walk Away remix of Paula's Album. She's a teenager from Texas with latin roots (if my memory serves me correctly). I also like the way Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings are sounding. I'll preview the album before committing though.
Thanks for bringing some welcomed relief to my busy day!
Missy Higgins rocks
Sharon Jones
I have been a fan of hers for a year or so now and she is fantastic, highly recommended. I have her album 'Naturally' and she has a new one coming out pretty soon, if it hasn't already. Also, if you like Amy Winehouse, you will be happy to know Jone was a large influence on her.
PARAMORE!!!!
Paramore
Alice Smith
PARAMORE
Sally Seltmann
I saw her perform recently in Oz. If you like naive, waifish songs sung with a naive girlish voice, well, that might be your thing. It certainly didn't float my boat.
I have to admit I'm getting really tired of girlish-voiced women singing their ditties. It might work if you're a teenager, but it gets pretty old coming from adult women.
Josh Ritter
I love Josh Ritter but is he that new? He seems to have been hanging around the pages of Hotpress (Irish music/culture/nonsense mag) and collapsing on stages here (/there) for YEARS. I recommend Girl in the War and Best for the Best from 2006's The Animal Years and To the Dogs or Whoever and the Temptation of Adam from the Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter. And also Harrisburg from 2000's Golden Age of Radio...or just download everything delete ever other song of your iPod and it'll all be ok. Josh promises.
Also have any of you seen the movie Once, sappy nonsense though it is the lead actor Glen "Outspan" Hansard's band the Frames are one of my faves check out their live album Set List and the song Fake from Burn the Maps.
And finally since they're both male dominated: Cowboy X a female fronted band also from Ireland. Their myspace is probably the best place to go and THE song is Gabbi.
Oh and Paramore's Misery Business is my current swagger song, you know it's late and dark and you're walking home down back streets and you want a gait that says look at me and feel pain, well you need a soundtrack to do that, especially when you're five foot two and most likely wearing mittens.
Agree, Golden Age of Radio
Thanks- It's a great song so is my "dumb-ass"...LOL
Not a dumb-ass comment
