The Broadway strike is over: Bring on the divas!

Oh, Happy Day! Or Oh, Happy Night as I'm writing this. I just watched Charlotte St. Martin, the spokesperson for the League of American Theatres and Producers, announce that a tentative deal has been reached to end the Broadway stagehands' union strike. Shows are reopening immediately, and happiness reigns in my home and in midtown Manhattan. (You can read a good timeline of the strike here.)

And the end of the strike is not the only good Broadway news these days. I just read that Patti LuPone will be reprising her role as Mama Rose in Gypsy next March.

This summer, the Encores! Summer Stars production of Gypsy at New York City Center was the hot ticket. (I certainly couldn't get my hands on one.) Everyone I know who saw it loved it, despite the tepid New York Times review.

I was underwhelmed by Bernadette Peters' turn as Rose in the 2003 revival.

But I'm still excited about this production. Patti LuPone is one of the great divas I've never seen on Broadway. Commercials for her Tony Award–winning performance in Evita were a staple of my childhood television watching, but I've somehow managed to miss her every time she's done another show.

So I'm grabbing a ticket to this one.

In other Broadway news, the Manhattan Theatre Club has announced the initial casting for its Broadway debut of Caryl Churchill's Top Girls next May.

The all-female cast of the odd, but interesting, feminist drama will include Mary Catherine Garrison, Elizabeth Marvel, Martha Plimpton and Marisa Tomei. In the likely event that you're not familiar with the play, here's the Manhattan Theatre Club's description:

“Set at the Top Girls Employment Agency in London in the early 1980s, this groundbreaking, theatrical play tells the story of Marlene, an ambitious career woman who has just been appointed head of the firm. But as she celebrates her achievements, can we applaud her values? This bold and ingenious work from the singularly talented author of Far Away and Cloud Nine offers one of the theatre's most honest portraits of what it means to be a woman in the modern world.”

I saw a reading of the first act at the Brooklyn Museum a few years ago; this is the act in which the central character, Marlene, holds a dinner party for historical figures including Pope Joan, the alleged 9th-century female pope.

In sum, I'm pretty happy. Broadway theater is back and I'm already making my plans for the spring.

    GYPSY!

I absolutely LOVE Gypsy, and I'm excited to see LuPone as Mama Rose. I actually had access to tix for Encores but had to work all the dates that were available. :-(

Have you ever seen the Bette Midler made-for-tv Gypsy from the early 90s? I dug it for what it was worth.

I also saw Bernatette Peters in Gypsy in 04 and wasn't impressed, either. She sounded very strained, and her cheeks looked like there was always a cough drop or something in them (although maybe that's just the shape of her face? who knows).

    Midler

I've meant to see it for ages, but still have not. I'll have to get around to it one of these days.

    Also, Sarah Paulson...

I was also relieved to hear the strike was over so that I can see Sarah Paulson when I visit NY next March.  (Not sure if it's been mentioned on this website, but) She'll be in Crimes of the Heart at Roundabout next Jan or Feb--the same production directed by Kathleen Turner at the Williamstown Fest.

So many shows, so little time.

    Ahhh Top Girls....

If Martha Plimpton is in it ... it's worth going to. :)  Although the fact that it's a Caryl Churchill doesn't hurt either ...

And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....

    Peters

I really liked Bernadette Peters in Gypsy. I like the idea of Rose as a grown up ingenue as opposed to a loud broad. But that's just me. Glad there are so many different versions to enjoy.

Thanks for your coverage Ace. So glad the strike is over.

    Totally!

I'm with you, Traveler. I thought Peters as Mama Rose was amazing--sexy, powerful and terrifying all at once.

    Peters

I really like Bernadette Peters and wanted to love her in the role. But I just didn't. I didn't dislike her, but something just didn't feel right. Her performance felt a little forced and mannered to me. Perhaps it was an off day for her.

I do agree that there can be more than one way to play the role. And I thought Tammy Blanchard was extraordinary.

I'm not positive that I'll love Patti Lupone, but I'm looking forward to seeing her.

    ACE!!!!

Did we see the same show? I thought Blanchard was wretched--like, really really bad. I saw Christa Moore in the role back in the early 1990s (with Linda Lavin as Mama Rose), and Blanchard had no clue what she was doing up there, compared with Moore. I've heard that Laura Benanti was astoundingly good in the Encores production, so I hope she reprises the role when the show comes to Broadway.

But one other thing to add: the last two revivals of Gypsy didn't make money. Why would producers bring yet another production of a musical which (it seems) only theatre afficianados are interested in seeing again and again? I agree it's one of the most brilliant musicals ever written, but still, there's got to be a limit.

    The Doll!

I was SO excited to hear about Gypsy being picked up from Encores to go to Broadway in March--excited enough that I'm going to change my plans to visit my cousin in New York from late January to April instead so I can see her.  Yeah, I'm really that big of a Patti fan that I would do that.  Hopefully the off-Broadway show I want to see that opens in January will still be up then too.  Yea for the strike being over!

    I WAS GETTING SO NERVOUS!

When I saw it on the news this morning, I nearly screamed. I came into school and all my friends and I had our own little theater-gasm. :D It was glorious.

But not as glorious as PATTI LUPONE IN GYPSY. You know, I was having a shitty night, and this news just completely turned it around. Going to have to get tickets, um, now.
