Karman Kregloe's blogDara & Karman's Hit List: "Online Dating Etiquette" (Episode 40)This week, Dara and I discuss the importance of observing online dating etiquette. There are many pitfalls to avoid, including the use of misleading photos (or those that feature your friends more prominently than yourself), oversharing, undersharing, and plagiarizing clever quotes from people who are smarter than you. There are also issues of privacy to consider. Unless your friends need to see some evidence in order to answer the questions, "Do you know her?" or "Do these look real?" it's probably not a good idea to pass around the photos sent to you by your new online "friend." Would you agree? What are the rules by which you always abide when dating online? Dara & Karman's Hit List "Online Dating Etiquette" (Episode 40)

Liz Feldman and Darlene Hunt developing NBC series with lesbian lead characterSources have told AfterEllen.com that out comic Liz Feldman (The Jay Leno Show, This Just Out) and writer Darlene Hunt (Will and Grace, The C Word) are developing a female buddy comedy with a lesbian lead character for NBC. Maybe the lesbian waters that have recently been tested by Hayden Panettiere's Claire on Heroes will embolden NBC to give lesbians more visibility on the network If not, perhaps the hypnotic power of Feldman's blue blazer will simply make her (and her show) impossible to resist.

We discuss the best way to make cheap and easy iconic lesbian costumes (Cagney and Lacey! Spashley!) and share some of our fondest memories of Halloweens past. Dara made a splash as a hot cop last year, and my favorite costume to date was Edina from Absolutely Fabulous. How will you be dressing up this Halloween? Brunch with Gabrielle Christian ("Brunch with Bridget," Episode 80)In honor of the 80th episode of Brunch With Bridget (can you believe she's cranked out 80 episodes?), comedian Bridget McManus has made a few changes. In this very special relaunch episode, special guest South of Nowhere's Gabrielle Christian talks about singing in the the Girltrash feature film (it's a musical!), her wedding this past summer, and her ongoing philanthropic work with FAIR Fund (an international nonprofit preventing human trafficking and sexual violence in the lives of youth, especially girls, around the world).
The new and improved Brunch isn't just a talk show, it's also a variety show. So in addition to an interview with Gabrielle, the show also includes a musical performance by singer-songwriter Marla, and some sketch comedy featuring the prehistoric stylings of Neanderlez, The World's First Lesbian.
Bridget's also delivers some insane dance numbers with her dance troupe, Dance Magic. You might recognize some familiar faces in Dance Magic, namely comedians Cat Davis (Cat On the Prowl) and Fortune Feimster, that is assuming that you can take your eyes off of their amazing leotards. And Brunch has a new house band, the musical duo That's What She Said, also known as Kathryn Lounsbery and Amy Turner.Suffice it to say, the new Brunch rocks. Dara & Karman's Hit List: "Old Dykes' Tales" (Episode 38)This week, we discuss those persistent cultural myths and urban legends that we've all been warned about. Some folks call them Old Wives' Tales, but we prefer to think of them as Old Dykes' Tales. Whether the story is about lesbians having longer ring fingers than index fingers, the terrifying effects of cracking knuckles or mixing Pop Rocks with soda, or the alleged good luck you'll get if a bird poops on your head, we dig deep to find the truth about these legends. We may just invent a few new ones along the way. You may remember that back when The N's South of Nowhere was in its prime, one of its primary cast members, Danso Gordon (who played "Clay Carlin") abruptly quit the show because it "went against my personal Faith and integrity." The show was one of the few on television that depicted gay teens in a positive way, and, at the time, there was speculation that this was exactly what Gordon found objectionable. As we reported in February 2007, "The N's editorial director recently (accidentally?) revealed at a youth roundtable that an unnamed actor on the show felt that the positive portrayal of coming out — and the decidedly less positive picture painted by a conservative Christian mom who tries de-gay her dykey daughter — was 'morally wrong,' and asked to leave the show." The negative publicity surrounding his departure surely put more pressure on the producers of the show, who were already under fire by conservative groups who protested the positive portrayal of queer teens Spencer (Gabrielle Christian) and Ashley (Mandy Musgrave). South of Nowhere went on without Gordon (whose character was killed off) and ran for a total of three seasons before being canceled in 2008. Since that time, the number of lesbians on television has continued to dwindle.
Today, I received the message below from Gordon that he asked me to share with AfterEllen.com readers: Submitted by on September 16, 2009 - 5:47pm. Dara & Karman's Hit List: "The Friend Zone" (Episode 33)This week Dara and I explore one of the most dangerous places you can ever find yourself when it comes to liking a girl. It's called "The Friend Zone." How do you know if she's put you in the dreaded "just friends" category? A few of the hints we've observed are when she's flirty with you in public but is unavailable for one-on-one time, she brings a "friend" to what you thought was a date, when she tells you her type and it's the opposite of you, and when she hangs out with you without getting dolled up. It's also not a good sign if she asks you to check her teeth after dinner. Only a friend would do that, and not a very good one!
But there is hope. You can get out of the friend zone, sometimes just be making a few simple adjustments to your own behavior (and appearance). We're here for you, and we'll give you some tips on how to get out of that dreaded friendly territory. How do you identify the friend zone? Dara & Karman's Hit List "The Friend Zone" (Episode 33)

Dara & Karman's Hit List: "The Scale" (Episode 32)We've all heard of the Kinsey Scale, but as effective as it is for measuring sexuality (or sexual history), it doesn't really address all the variations of gender that we see expressed by people on a daily basis. Having absolutely no root in science, sociology, or even good sense, this week Dara and I construct our own scale examining all the colors of the butch/femme rainbow that we see in pop culture. On our scale, a "0" might indicate a woman who is butch enough to get "sir-ed" by the clueless at least once a day, and a "10" might indicate a woman so femme that her nail polish is permanently tattooed on her fingers. We guesstimate where some of our favorite celebrities (some gay, some straight, some ... not), such as Jodie Foster, Clementine Ford and Queen Latifah, might land on our make-believe scale. We also try to place ourselves and each other on the scale, with wildly varying results. If you were using our scale, where would you land? Dara & Karman's Hit List "The Scale" (Episode 32)

And usually one knows, right off the bat, if there's going to be a problem. So this week, we discuss our own dating and relationship deal breakers. While there are some fake deal breakers (for instance, does your height requirement really matter if she's smoking hot?), the real ones should be noted. You'll pay the price if you ignore those red flags, which for us include dates with bad table manners, secretive behavior and too much "grown-up talk." If you get past the dating stage and head for a relationship, there's a whole new set of rules to consider. We talk about the likelihood of making it really work with someone if your relationship deal breakers (like bad kissing techniques, invasion of your privacy, and anger management problems) rear their heads.
