Bjork, Lang, McLachlan worship at the folk altar

The CD A Tribute to Joni Mitchell will be released this spring and will include covers of Mitchell tunes by some of our favorite people. Check out this track list:

  • Sufjan Stevens - 'Free Man In Paris'
  • Bjork - 'The Boho Dance'
  • Caetano Veloso - 'Dreamland'
  • Brad Mehldau - 'Don't Interrupt The Sorrow'
  • Cassandra Wilson - 'For The Roses'
  • Prince - 'A Case Of You'
  • Sarah McLachlan - 'Blue'
  • Annie Lennox - 'Ladies Of The Canyon'
  • Emmylou Harris - 'Magdalene Laundries'
  • Elvis Costello - 'Edith And The Kingpin'
  • k.d. Lang - 'Help Me'
  • James Taylor - 'River'

They could have easily made a triple CD with all of the fabulous Mitchell material (and talented Mitchell followers who would have surely loved to cover her) to choose from, but this looks like a strong collection. McLachlan recently covered "River" (one of my faves) on her CD Wintersong.

    Back on 4/16/00, there was "An All-Star Tribute to Joni Mitchell" on TBS hosted by Ashley Judd. Among the performers was Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, Elton John Wynonna Judd, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, Cyndi Lauper,James Taylor, Cassandra Wilson.

    It was fantastic. Joni was there in the balcony observing the show. It was one of the best shows I've seen. I'm glad I taped it.

    I have several of her CDs. My favorite is "Song To A Seagull". I originally had the LP. If you are ever able to get a copy, watch the TV tribute.

    I'm a huge Joni Mitchell fan, but not being in the US, didn't SEE that All Star Tribute, but heard a few tracks. Didn't like Sarah McL's Blue as much as that rather lovely version of River here on the YouTube vid. Elton John did a good Free Man in Paris, so who is that dude listed on the CD? Couldn't they get Elt to agree?

    Unfortunately, Joni's recent stuff has been pretty patchy, with only a couple of decent songs on her albums from the 90s onwards, and I'm not a fan of the orchestral versions of her classics at all! My favourite is Hejira, a brillliant album, and Furry Sings the Blues is just beautiful.
