Top 10 Female Cops on TVLast night TNT aired a special new two-hour episode of The Closer, their popular summer series starring Kyra Sedgwick. It got me wondering: who are the best law enforcement officers in the history of TV? Currently, I'm enjoying Law and Order: CI's Maggie Wheeler (Julianne Nicholson), and - don't shoot me, Olivia fans - Benson's temporary replacement, Dani Beck (Connie Nielson). I'm also digging Gina Torres as the head of the crisis negotiation unit on Standoff, and of course, I loved the lesbians cops in the never-aired pilot Nikki and Nora. But it takes more than a few good episodes to stand out among the now-crowded field of female detectives, captains, and FBI agents on TV. Here's a list of my overall favorites: 10. Lt. Billie Chambers, Fastlane (Tiffani Thiessen)
Sure, her show was only on TV for 5 minutes, but Billie was fun, aggressive and sexy, and her undercover stint as a lesbian was pretty convincing. 9. Captain Monica Rawling, The Shield (Glenn Close)
The captain of the controversial FX series for one season, Monica ruled with a quiet but firm hand, and wasn't afraid to bend the rules when she needed to. 8. Inspector Magdalena "Magda" Ramirez, The Division (Lisa Vidal)
As a single mother struggling with relationships, Magda was just as interesting off the clock as she was on in her four seasons on this underrated Lifetime detective series about female cops in San Francisco. 7. Det. Diane Russell, NYPD Blue (Kim Delaney)
A recovering alcoholic and incest victim, Det. Russell was one of the few female characters on the controversial cop drama consistently given major storylines. Her character got a little annoying - and depressing - by the end of her 94-episode run, but that pretty much characterizes the show in general. 6. Lt. Anita Van Buren, Law and Order (S. Epatha Merkerson) Merkerson has been in a record 313 L&O episodes so far as the weary head of the venerable detective unit, and she does that "nothing surprises me anymore" head-shake better than anyone on TV. Click below to see my top 5... 5. Cagney and Lacey (Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless)
These trailblazing characters from the 4. Det. Shakima Greggs, The Wire (Sonja Sohn)
Hard-working Kima will spend hours patiently eavesdropping on suspects and carefully cultivating relationships with informants. And did I mention she's a lesbian? Yeah, she gets bonus points for that. 3. Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson, The Closer (Kyra Sedgwick)
Smart, flawed, and sporting a great Southern accent, Brenda is one of the most three-dimensional cops on TV, and so subversive she makes you forget she's a cop - until you suddenly find yourself confessing to a triple-homicide. Damn you, Brenda! 2.Sydney Bristow, Alias (Jennifer Garner)
As a CIA agent, Sydney doesn't exactly fit in with the rest of the women here, but it's my list, so I'm putting her on it. For five years, Sydney juggled jarring personal revelations - my mother's dead! no, she's not! yes she is! - while chasing down the bad guys, and she did it all while wearing great wigs and sexy outfits. 1. Olivia Benson, Law and Order: SVU (Mariska Hargitay)
What can I say about Benson that hasn't already been said? Hargitay won an Emmy for her portrayal of the detective who specializes in "sexually based offenses", and earned herself legions of fans along the way. I'm sure I've left some good cops / FBI agents / general ass kickers off the list, so let me know your favorites in the comments. Submitted by on December 4, 2006 - 9:22pm. |

What about Scully?
I never really got into the X-Files, so she doesn't make my Top 10 list. But you're right, I'm guessing she makes a lot of other people's! :)
I missed Scully too!
Absolutely -- the enigmatic Dr. Scully is my favorite. She kicks ass and takes names (and is a very good shot), all while wearing very high heels. Ah, Scully.
Great assemblage of law enforcement women! And yes, no list is complete without Scully. Oh, and Kyra Sedgwick should be #1. I can't remember the last time someone was so perfectly cast in a role. Maybe Amanda Blake as Miss Kitty on Gunsmoke, but more likely Emma Caulfield as Anya on Buffy.
Emma Caulfield was soooo funny as Anya on Buffy... That was the best show EVER!! hehe... I miss it...
Erm... I like CSI's Sara Sidle (not a cop) and Sofia Curtis (wouldn't they make a nice couple together?) and NCIS's Abby Sciuto.
I like Jorja Fox as Sarah Sidle on CSI....
I think maybe I need to look at a picture of Cagney and Lacey every day... I can't believe how happy it just made me. They were awesome.
Lily Rush from Cold
Sarah Shahi from LIFE
Sarah Shahi from LIFE
she its hot
What about Grace?
Holly Hunter as Grace Anadarko of "Saving Grace"....She's HOT!
Punkin
Recently on TV, Kathryn Morris, as Lily Rush in Cold Case, not that bad!
Technically, the CSI ladies are not cops, they are investigators and therefore don't qualify to make the list. I agree with Olivia Benson being #1 and IF the CSI ladies were eligible, I would put Catherine Willows and Sara Sidle as #2 and #3 respectively.
My vote goes to Angie Dickinson. The first truly successful drama starring a woman was Police Woman. She was one of the few (at times only) heroic women on TV in the 70's. While the quality of the show was certainly not up to Law & Order caliber it was way above Charlie's Angels etc. Ms. Dickinson even won a Golden Globe and received several Emmy nominations. I agreed whole-heartedly with Mariska Hargitay's Det. Benson and the wonderful ladies of Cagney & Lacey. However, my heart will always belong to Sgt. Pepper Anderson.
My vote goes to Angie Dickinson. Police Woman was the first truly successful TV drama starring a woman. She was one of the few (at times only) heroines on TV in the 1970's. While not exactly Law & Order caliber, Police Story and it's spin-off Police Woman were considered the quality dramas of their time. Ms. Dickinson even won a Golden Globe and received several Emmy nominations. I agree whole-heartedly with Mariska Hargitay's Det. Benson and the wonderful ladies of Cagney and Lacey. However, my heart will always belong to Sgt. Pepper Anderson.
Oh it definitely has to be Lilly Rush on Cold Case.....her love life sucks only because she hasn't accepted the fact she's gay. HA HA
The "Dani" character on SVU was amazing, she needs to come back. And Wheeler ... she keeps me watching.
CSI's Sofia Curtis is a cop, though.
Since I watched "Serving in Silence" I love Glenn Close so her character Captain Monica Rawlingis is my favourite (even if I don't like the rest of the series very much).
#2 would be Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris)
If we went back a good three or four years, Olivia deserves the top spot. Not anymore. I've never watched the shows featuring the rest of these women and I'm still willing to bet that they're less annoying than Hargitay's now perpetually teary-eyed, made-up, and over-done portrayal of what used to be an amazing (and amazingly beautiful) character.
Gotta love Olivia, THANKYOU SARAH
I love Benson, even if she's terribly girly these days, we can remember the short hair and leather jacket with fondness!
I'd add Scully and Reyes too, plus Kate Lochley from Angel.
Thank goodness you included Chris Cagney on the list--Sharon Gless be still my beating heart!!! I agree with your choice of Oliva Benson as top (current) cop though....Cagney and Benson, hmmmm, I like the sound of that.
Ah, a woman in uniform, or not...
Love Olivia, Scully, Wheeler...
Love the Brits - mmmmm Helen and Simone
Back in the day, Cagney/Lacey had me glued to the tube...
Back before the day, Mrs. Peel had me glued to the tube...
As for the scientists, my vote goes to doc/cop.... Amanda Burton from the British crime drama Silent Witness.

While not exactly Law & Order caliber, Police Story and it's spin-off Police Woman were considered the quality dramas of their time. I'm so glad to see a few votes for Stepfanie Kramer as Dee Dee McCall in Hunter. She was one of my favourite icons growing up. And Catherine Willows could swab me for epithelials any day...
But what's with the Talia Winters vote? She wasn't even a Psi-Cop. Now Lyta Alexander... she was a Psi-cop for a little while and she's damn hot. Sorry to get all geeky on your asses. ;)
Also wanting Scully and Reyes in the list! Yum Yum! Gotta agree with Olivia as number one....*swoon*
And my British votes go to Lesbian detective Jo Masters and sexy Samantha Nixon in ITV's The Bill :o)
have to agree with Anon.....Simone Lahbib as Helen Stewart in Bad Girls was the best. She didn't take crap from anyone.
oh definitely DCI Tennyson.. where's the love for the sexiest woman evar, let alone intensely believable as a cop??? PLUS: did y'all get to see ANY of these other women as naked as helen mirren? i rest my case.
Lol Helen in Bad Girls is indeed very sexy, but she's a screw not a cop ;o) So lets say Simone Lahbib as DI Alex Fielding in Wire in the Blood instead! slightly older but still as lovely!I also agree with DCI Tennyson! Just didnt think of her til after i went to bed!
You mentioned Mariska Hargitay's Emmy..
Gillian Anderson won several emmy's for her protrayal of Dana Scully on the X Files.. and she was a trail blazer of sorts for educated, smart, women who kick a.s.s. !!!!!
Cheers!
If you want the really great female cops, see what England has produced. Helen Mirren as Jane Tennyson in Prime Suspect was sexy and powerful. At something over sixty, she's a bigger sex symbol now than ever.
Kate Jackson was always my favorite "Charlie's Angel". Stephanie Zimbalist in "Remington Steele". Ally Walker, as Dr. Samantha Waters in the mid 1990's series "The Profiler" there was lesbian undertones btwn Sam and her supposed "best friend/nanny character" played by Erica Gimble. Also the current FBI series "Numb3rs" with Diane Farr as Megan Reeves, she doesn't play wimpy at all and she is hot and smart on and off the screen.
You mentioned Nikki and Nora which I want more of and Mariska Hargitay. I give you Super Kudos because you mentioned my all time number 1, Jennifer Garner (Sydney Bristow)!!
I totally agree with your number 1 - Olivia Benson is awesome!
But I miss Sofia Curtis (she IS a cop in CSI) and Scully & Reyes, too.
Does anyone else remember Karen Sillas as Det. Rose "Phil" Phillips on the criminally short-lived series, "Under Suspicion"? She was hot! Cagney and Lacey will always get top billing with me...though no one can deny the dynamism that is Helen Mirren as DCI Tennyson. Really enjoy Sharon Small as DS Havers, but she owes everything she is and isn't to Gillian Anderson as Scully. Did anyone mention Andrea Thompson as NYPD Blue's Det. Kirkendall? I'm also a fan of Nancy McKeon as Jinny Extead--really complex and flawed character, the likes of which is rarely seen on US tv. Det. Sofia Curtis is cool, too. And Yancy Butler was awesome in Witchblade... Still, gotta go w/ Cagney & Lacey as the standout, longest-running trailblazers without whom none of the others would have had a shot at the badge.
hands down......Special Agent Elle Greenaway, recently retired from the FBI's BAU Criminal Minds sexy sexy Lola Glaudin!!!!)
and I'm thinking the shower scene in "Consequence" should get her some bonus points
oh yah.........and how could I forget.....She had had a recurring role on the HBO series The Sopranos as Federal Agent Deborah Ciccerone-Waldrup.
Prior to those roles she appeared on NYPD Blue as Dolores Mayo, a heroin-addicted office assistant.
Totally hands down Lola Glaudini best cop in a few shows.

What about Lily Rush (Kathryn Morris) on Cold Case? And the newly added Tracie Thoms on Cold Case. (Sonja Sohn was on Sunday's episode and may be a returning guest. But her occupation was nurse. :-)
Poppy Montgomery, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Roselyn Sanchez all play FBI agents on
Without a Trace. And Dianne Farr plays an FBI agent on Numb3rs. And of course, Michelle
Rodriquez played a scary cop before she got killed off Lost.
Cagney and Lacey paved the way for all these characters.
Is it just me, or are you missing Jane Tennison [Helen Mirren] from the Prime Suspect series on PBS? I know she's no spring chicken, but the woman is hot. :)
(not my real name...LOL) Well the whole CSI crew of women kind of works for me. Least of all Marg (Hot as L) Helgenberger, and the other blonde hottie...can't remember her name. That tiny voice of hers can throw you off, but she'll bust ya' in a minute if you keep watching her eyes. I would hate to be a criminal with her on my trail. I'd just have to confess!
I hate to be that girl, but Cagney and Lacey was on in the '80s, not the '70s. And I loved them (perhaps a little too much).
Oh come on...Magda over Jinny from the Division?? They should BOTH be on the list. What lesbian didn't look up to Nancy McKeon back in the day?
