New Cleopatra movie in the works

Jessica AlbaVariety reports there's a new Cleopatra movie coming from Columbia Pictures - not a remake of the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor film focusing on the Egyptian queen's powers of seduction, but a film that focuses on Cleopatra's skills as a firm ruler and military tactician. Given the emphasis on the female leader's brains and talent, rather than her sex appeal, it's no surprise the script is based on a forthcoming biographical novel written by a woman - Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff. Schiff reportedly intends to explore Cleopatra ruthless rise to power on the battlefield and in marriage (including twice marrying brothers, then killing them, along with a sister).

Now on to the important question: who should play Cleopatra? Karina Lombard? Angelina Jolie (sans her terrible accent from Alexander)? Jessica Alba? If you've seen her in Dark Angel, you know she can do conflicted and determined like no one's business.

Or for something completely different, the folks at Columbia could could cast Sandra Bullock, give her a gun and her trademark pratfalls, and market it as a comedy called Cleopatra Undercover.

How about Angie Harmon? She's got that Cleopatra-esque look - and I love her smokey voice!

They could cast Sophia Bush, set it in high school, and have Sophia fall for two very different brothers...oh wait, that's already the plot of "One Tree Hill".

As long as they don't cast Sienna Miller I'll be content.

Well, it'd be a breeze for Cate Blanchet, but given that she's taking a break from film for a couple of years soon, I guess she's out.

Angelina Jolie...hmmm: not sure she does brains very well. She does "dominant" well, and probably "ruthless". But brainy?

Not many dark-haired actresses who can do justice to such a role....definately NOT Jessica Alba!

How about Catherine-Zeta Jones? I can never get enough of her!

So I know that it is widely regarded that Cleopatra comes from the Macedonian-Greek background but there is a lot of discussion concerning her true race and she is actually believed to be a mixed-raced Egyptian, she may not have had dark skin but to some extent she did have Nubian blood in her. So why then are the majority if not all of these suggestions white women, I don't see people suggesting that the next Helen of troy should be played by Nia Long. I understand the argument of just not knowing the history, that is a completely fare argument but if that is the case then why would you automatically assume a white actress play a past leader of an African Country? I am going to start another blog within a blog if I may, why do white actress pop into your mind? Is it the fact that they have been historically played by white women? if so keep in mind that the last Cleopatra on film was Elizabeth Taylor if I am not mistaken. Is it that black history is constantly undermined in this society and is appropriated by white culture or is there another reason?

Ps. Nia Long is my suggestion! Because she kicks ass in anything!

I agree. Cleopatra shouldn't be played by a white actress- it's not historically acurate and I I would imagine potentially offensive. Gina Torres would be cool.

So I know she's been in a lot of movies lately, but I don't think that Rosario Dawson would be a bad choice. I think she could potentially do that role well, IF the script is quality. I mean, we wouldn't want another Alexander. That movie could have been sooo much better!

I agree that Cleopatra shouldn't be played by a white woman, T, but neither Jessica Alba nor Karina Lombard are white (they're both multi-racial), and I just suggested Sandra Bernhard for laughs.

Gina Torres is an excellent idea, Anonymous!

First woman that came to mind was Monica Bellucci (she can do powerful, she can do skillfull, she can do brainy, she can *definetely* do seductress) but reading about the multi-racial factor, well, I'd kill to see Jennifer Beals ruling in the big screen (I know, I know, ain't happening, maybe in an alternative universe where Dana is the star of The L Word Season 4... )

Without a doubt - the new Cleopatra should be Sarah Shahi [Carmen from the L Word]. Oh, please, please, please, please ......

    T. Thank you so much for bringing up this very valid point. As for Jessica Alba, Karina Lombard and Jennifer Beals as options because they are "not-white" we all know that the majority of audiences will view them as such. So my vote goes to Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long, Rosario Dawson or even Halle Berry.

T, THANK YOU! I'm about tired of the only decent depiction of Cleopatra being in a damn Michael Jackson movie!

CF, who views Jessica and Jennifer as "non-white?" Nobody I know. In fact, JB might be one of the only biracial people I've ever seen who Black folks never try to claim. LOL. But I guess it really doesn't matter b/c this is Hollywood; land of dreams and visions. If Angelina can put on blackface and play Daniel Pearl's wife, hell, why not just make her a Nubian queen?
