WANTED: FORMER L WORD CAST MEMBER NOT AFRAID TO MAKE OUT WITH ANYONE ON SET
Last week I told you that Janina Gavankar (who played the short-lived character Papi on The L Word) has joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy. Considering Gavankar’s straight, it wasn’t fodder for Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever — until now.
(Just a warning, if you’re not interested in reading absolutely anything about the new season of Grey’s, you should stop reading now as our speculation could result in spoiling a possible surprise.)
The casting of Gavankar comes with the Entertainment Weekly-reported rumor that Grey’s producers specifically sought out an actress who would be “comfortable making out with both men and women.”
It sounds like Gavankar might be up for that challenge, as she has been cast as a new female intern. Who could she be making out with?
Ever since Erica and Callie hooked up in the last episode of Grey’s last season, much has been speculated about the storyline: Will Callica become a full-blown couple? Will they be able to maintain a relationship without the promise of a ménage à trois with McSteamy? Will they be the newest Seattle Grace couple to christen hospital beds? Some of those questions have been answered (yes, yes and hopefully, but yet to be determined), but it could still somehow be related to the casting of an intern who is not opposed to making out with any available staff member.
So let my daydreaming commence. Back to what I was saying about a ménage à trois (but substitute Gavankar’s character in for McSteamy)…
Shonda Rhimes told AfterEllen.com in July that we’re going to see the Callie and Erica storyline play out, no matter what, "Then we’re going to watch the larger world of what happens when the two of them come out in the hospital, and what happens when Callie’s dad finds out and that sort of thing, which I think is going to be really, really interesting."
Yes, yes, coming out is always an exciting storyline. But what I’m really excited to see on next week’s Grey’s premiere is what EW says happens at the end of the episode:
There’s an awesome, awkward, totally endearing scene between [Erica and Callie]. Sara Ramirez, in particular, is just fantastic.
Awesome and awkward? It sounds like the gay characters are getting the same treatment as the straight ones on the show. What a relief!
Check out these screencaps of that conversation from next week’s season premiere:
Erica and Callie in the Sept. 25 episode
Alas, there is still no news on whether Gavankar will be forced to wear a hat of any kind. I’ll keep you posted.
Note from Sarah Warn: I’ve seen next week’s two-hour season premiere episode, and there is indeed a sweet and funny scene between Callie and Erica, but don’t expect the relationship to be featured prominently in this episode.
