Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. (September 19, 2008)

DOES THIS LIP LINER MATCH MY TIE? Last week, we reported the widespread rumors that Ellen DeGeneres might be the next celebrity to represent CoverGirl cosmetics.

Then, faster than you say “Powder me!” DeGeneres announced on her show that the rumors were true.

You know how I always like to share what’s going on in my life with you all, and I was going to give you some news, and unfortunately rumors started circulating all over the internet …I am here to set the record straight right now. I am not pregnant. It just turned out to be a bump. I went and had it checked out. … That’s not the news. I am the new face of CoverGirl.
She added, “I am very, very excited about it… It’s a very cool thing…I’m honored and the photo shoot was ‘easy, breezy, beautiful…CoverGirl.'” DeGeneres is making history as an out lesbian celebrity representing a major cosmetic line. And in addition to being not straight, she is also not girly, which makes the selection of DeGeneres for the role a fascinating cultural statement-regardless of whether or not that was ever CoverGirl’s intention.

Sure, DeGeneres is popular. In fact, according to Ad Age, “Ms. DeGeneres ranked as the most popular celebrity in the U.S. in a poll by Harris Interactive earlier this year. She edged out talk rival Oprah Winfrey, who generally enjoys higher ratings but saw her popularity dinged after her strong endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential bid.”

But in addition to being popular, she also challenges conventional notions of femininity (and, arguably, feminine beauty) every time she dons a vest, adjusts her tie or marries Portia de Rossi. The response to the news has been pretty tame. In AOL’s WalletPop blog post, “Are cosmetics companies the new anti-glam?” the writer observes:

Ellen, of course, wears a ton of makeup in her daily job as a talk show host, but she is not the first person you’d think of when you think about glamor. She’s also not exactly a runway model. She looks like a real person and dresses in a true anti-glam fashion – a pant suit is still a pant suit even if you wear it to host the Oscars.

While Rihanna appeals to teens who want to look their best, Ellen will appeal to older women who still want to look their best, but maybe realize that they are who they are and they don’t need to cover up anything or change anything about themselves. That’s, at least, the message I’d be getting as somebody in the target audience. It strikes me as something akin to Dove’s “real women” campaign, which picks regular-looking women to advertise beauty products. And it’s a refreshing trend from the rail-thin models who had become so prevalent on magazine covers.

Pop-culture analysts may say what they will about pant suits, but there’s been no substantial amount of public snark aimed at CoverGirl for selecting an out, soft butch lesbian as a spokesmodel. If anything, the only hint of a backlash has been against DeGeneres for aligning herself with a company known for animal testing.

And lesbians weighing in on the subject don’t even seem surprised by the progressive nature of CoverGirl’s casting.

On our own forum, AfterEllen.com reader Sista says, “She’s natural, she’s dynamic, she’s 50, she’s the new face of CoverGirl. And, she’s a lesbian! How cool is that???” And Dorothy Snarker mused, “If we can explode the myths about lesbian femininity and redefine traditional beauty norms, can the total eradication of the mullet be far behind?”

Snarker also wrote on her blog, “You’ve come a long way, lesbo,” and it’s true. Back in the early days of lesbian feminism, lesbians were considered “fierce” when we made the personal political, established collectives to record women’s music, and wrote blistering manifestoes about dismantling (or dismembering) patriarchy.

In today’s Tyra-fied world, the ability to “smile with your eyes” might be the only requirement.

WHEN LA FEMME NIKITA MET A FOXY LADY Starlet du jour Megan Fox revealed in a new GQ cover story that she briefly dated a Russian stripper named Nikita.

Oh, honey, haven’t we all?

The Transformers star told the magazine they met after Fox began living on her own in Los Angeles at age 18:

Well, that year my boyfriend broke up with me, and I decided – oh man; sorry, Mommy! – that I was in love with this girl that worked at the Body Shop (a strip club on Sunset Boulevard). I decided that I was going to get her to love me back, and I went out of my way to create a relationship with this girl… I was there all the time – I would go there by myself. I bought her things – perfume, body spray, girlie stuff. I turned into a weird middle-aged married man. I felt like I had this need to save Nikita. I’d get lap dances so I could get to know her, and I’d give her what I thought were great little sound bites of inspiration – like ‘You can do it, you’re better than this!’ I didn’t want her to be there.
So why Nikita? “She smelled like angels.” Besides smelling like divinity (which apparently smells like vanilla, in case you were wondering), Fox describes Nikita as a “tough badass” who was “sadistic and sarcastic and funny” and did “beautiful slow dances to Aerosmith ballads.” Someone call Cinemax After Dark, I’ve got the perfect script to pitch to them.

The revelation came as part of a frank, brash interview the 22-year-old actress gave to the magazine that covered everything from her dislike for what Disney does to its young stars (“F*** Disney”) to her love of comics and their fans (“They’re not nerds. They’re just passionate.”) to her hatred of the double standard (“I should be able to talk about sex the same way any man can.”).

Still, after spilling her Sapphic beans, Fox seemed to think better of her candidness to the interviewer:

I don’t want it to come off as a Lindsay Lohan vibe. You know? Are you going to push an ‘Is she a lesbian’ angle? Oh man, you are going to do that to me… Look, I’m not a lesbian – I just think that all humans are born with the ability to be attracted to both sexes. I mean, I could see myself in a relationship with a girl – Olivia Wilde is so sexy she makes me want to strangle a mountain ox with my bare hands. She’s mesmerizing. And lately I’ve been obsessed with Jenna Jameson, but… Oh boy.
She had me at Olivia Wilde. She lost me at Jenna Jameson.

So, then, did GQ indeed push the “Is she a lesbian?” angle? I’ll just let their all-caps, exclamation-pointed headline answer that for you: “MEGAN FOX WAS A TEENAGE LESBIAN!” Subtle, very subtle.

But then, these were also some of the photos GQ chose to illustrate Fox’s teenage lesbian Russian stripper dating. Seriously, someone get me that number for Cinemax.

MOUNTAIN OXEN BETTER BEWARE

Speaking of Olivia Wilde, the House star returned to her role as bisexual doctor Thirteen/Remy Hadley this week in the season premiere of the hit medical drama.

Here’s a look at her with House and a patient in the episode: While her bisexuality was only hinted at (read: mocked by House) during the episode, Wilde discussed her character’s sexuality with New York Magazine this week:

On House I definitely think it’s a great twist. Because whenever anyone sees a young woman in the same room with House, they think they’re going to get it on. And now, they’ve created this person who you don’t know, you know? If she’s in the same room with Cuddy, are you going to assume the same thing about them? I sort of love that it’s going to keep people guessing. You’re never going to be able to say, “Okay, yawn, now I know who’s going to get together. This is so predictable.”
So, will she get it on with Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein)?

“You never know. I love Lisa. It’d be great.” Please, gods of television, make this happen.

I think Megan Fox even has a mountain ox she’d be willing to strangle as a sacrificial offering just in case.

WANTED: FORMER L WORD CAST MEMBER NOT AFRAID TO MAKE OUT WITH ANYONE ON SET Last week I told you that Janina Gavankar (who played the short-lived character Papi on The L Word) has joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy. Considering Gavankar’s straight, it wasn’t fodder for Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever – until now.

(Just a warning, if you’re not interested in reading absolutely anything about the new season of Grey’s, you should stop reading now as our speculation could result in spoiling a possible surprise.) The casting of Gavankar comes with the Entertainment Weekly-reported rumor that Grey’s producers specifically sought out an actress who would be “comfortable making out with both men and women.”

It sounds like Gavankar might be up for that challenge, as she has been cast as a new female intern. Who could she be making out with?

Ever since Erica and Callie hooked up in the last episode of Grey’s last season, much has been speculated about the storyline: Will Callica become a full-blown couple? Will they be able to maintain a relationship without the promise of a ménage à trois with McSteamy? Will they be the newest Seattle Grace couple to christen hospital beds? Some of those questions have been answered (yes, yes and hopefully, but yet to be determined), but it could still somehow be related to the casting of an intern who is not opposed to making out with any available staff member.

So let my daydreaming commence. Back to what I was saying about a ménage à trois (but substitute Gavankar’s character in for McSteamy)…

Shonda Rhimes told AfterEllen.com in July that we’re going to see the Callie and Erica storyline play out, no matter what, “Then we’re going to watch the larger world of what happens when the two of them come out in the hospital, and what happens when Callie’s dad finds out and that sort of thing, which I think is going to be really, really interesting.”

Yes, yes, coming out is always an exciting storyline. But what I’m really excited to see on next week’s Grey’s premiere is what EW says happens at the end of the episode:

There’s an awesome, awkward, totally endearing scene between [Erica and Callie]. Sara Ramirez, in particular, is just fantastic.
Awesome and awkward? It sounds like the gay characters are getting the same treatment as the straight ones on the show. What a relief!

Check out these screencaps of that conversation from next week’s season premiere: Alas, there is still no news on whether Gavankar will be forced to wear a hat of any kind. I’ll keep you posted.

Season 10 also introduces Michaela McManus (One Tree Hill) as Assistant District Attorney Kim Greylek, the latest babe-wielding-a-brief to emerge from that office’s revolving door. Past SVU assistant DAs have included Stephanie March (Alexandra Cabot), Diane Neal (Casey Novak) and America’s hottest Republican, Angie Harmon (Abbie Carmichael). Whatever I’m accused of, I’d like to plead guilty and throw myself at the mercy of the court.

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER QUEER WOMEN WINS AN EMMY Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon picked up another Emmy for her guest role on Law and Order: SVU last season (“Alternate”).

Here’s a highlight video of the episode, in which she plays a woman with multiple personalities whose daughter goes missing (Benson’s V-neck sweater also makes an appearance): Nice slap, Cynthia!

LET’S HOPE MAGGIE DOES DOESN’T SHOW UP AND CHALLENGE REESE TO A PILLOW FIGHT Eden Riegel is returning to All My Children! Soapnet broke the news yesterday (thanks to Pyewacket for the tip!):

Eden Riegel, who played the beloved Bianca Montgomery from 2000-2005 (with appearances in 2006 and 2007), is coming back to the show.

What’s better? She’s bringing along actress Tamara Braun, best known for her work as Carly on General Hospital and recently as Ava on Days of our Lives.

When last seen in 2007 (she arrived to visit her nephew, Ian), Bianca was living with Paris with her young daughter, Miranda.

She’s been busy in Paris, getting a new girlfriend. And her name is Reese Williams, played by none other than Tamara Braun. Whoa! Bianca’s got a hot girlfriend! Score, Bianca. Anyway, Reese is a confident and successful architect who Bianca has been shacking up with in Paris (she doesn’t have an accent, don’t worry).

…Oh, yeah, we forgot to mention why they are coming to town. More on that tomorrow. It’s amazing and will change All My Children forever. You know, nothing big.

Bianca will make her return on October 17; Reese will follow on October 30. Here are photos of the future happy couple: Now that the most popular woman in America is a married lesbian CoverGirl, maybe the writers at All My Children will finally let Bianca kiss her girlfriend on camera once in awhile?

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE! The Women came in a decent fourth at the box office last weekend, with around $10.1 million in sales (now up to $12 million).

Feminist and lesbian-inclusive magazine Bitch needs your donations to stay in business!

Brad Pitt donated $100,000 to fight California’s November ballot initiative that would overturn the state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage, because “no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn’t harm another and because discrimination has no place in America.” Another reason Pitt deserves to be on our Top 10 List of Lesbian-ish Men!

MediaWeek says the increase in gay talent on reality shows “may just be a matter of good business.”

Set your DVRs: Brunch With Bridget returns from hiatus to debut on Logo tonight at 2am (technically Saturday morning), and on AfterEllen.com on Sunday morning.

Karman Kregloe and Bridget McManus will be at the Cranberry Bar in Zurich, Switzerland next Friday, September 26, from 4pm to 6pm. We’ll post any changes or updates next week in this thread on the forum.

We’re launching a new video blog with some familiar faces this afternoon, devoted to…well, we’re going keep that a surprise, but here’s a hint: the first episode manages to touch on Blair from The Facts of Life, Megan Good from D.E.B.S., Buffy and Willow, and and the girls from Sugar Rush. What do all these women have in common? Tune in later today to find out.

That’s it for this week! Got the inside scoop on a hot new lesbian/bi actor/musician/TV show/film? Tell us at [email protected]. Check back next Friday for another edition of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.

If that’s not enough Rosie for you, you can tune into the Home Shopping Network on September 21 at noon, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. as they offer up Season One of The Rosie O’Donnell Show on DVD. Imagine knowing in 1996, when Rosie’s talk show first aired, that she’d fall out of love with Tom Cruise because she’s a lesbian, and Tom Cruise would leave Nicole Kidman to fall in love with Joey Potter. It’s the stuff of epic poetry – or ill-formed haikus. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference.

DOINK DOINK NBC’s hit cop procedural, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit – or as I like to call it, The Mariska Hargitay Show – kicks off its 10th season next week with an episode called “Trials.”

The guest star? Out actress and baby mama, Sara Gilbert, who recently (unfortunately) joined the cast of CBS’s The Big Bang Theory. The plot of the season premiere, which airs Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 10 p.m. ET, involves Hargitay’s Detective Olivia Benson, and her partner, Elliot Stabler (the versatile and always awesome Chris Meloni) investigating a child’s claims of abuse by his foster parents, played by Julie Bowen (Weeds, Boston Legal) and Luke Perry (Beverly Hills, 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

Between changing from her signature look – a solid colored, button-down shirt – to her other signature look – a white T-shirt under a V-neck sweater – Det. Benson follows clues that lead her to an unsolved rape involving Sara Gilbert’s character, Kaitlyn Murphy, who also happens to be the foster kid’s birth mother. That is not the look I’d have on my face if Mariska Hargitay came knocking on my door, but that’s just me.

Season 10 also introduces Michaela McManus (One Tree Hill) as Assistant District Attorney Kim Greylek, the latest babe-wielding-a-brief to emerge from that office’s revolving door. Past SVU assistant DAs have included Stephanie March (Alexandra Cabot), Diane Neal (Casey Novak) and America’s hottest Republican, Angie Harmon (Abbie Carmichael). THE REDCOATS ARE COMING, AND THEY’RE BRINGING THEIR GAYS! After a self-imposed blog hiatus that she broke only to talk politics – and oh, how I understand that – Rosie O’Donnell is back to the business of berating The View’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck by way of poetry.

“sarah p – elisabeth h / identical cousins / women who hunt in high heels / gives one pause,” Rosie wrote.

Clearly, Rosie will not be reaching across partisan lines during this American election season. Reaching across the Atlantic Ocean, however? Absolutely, she will.

Rosie will be the first American to guest star on HBO’s new sketch show Little Britain USA, which premieres this month. She’ll play herself in a skit where she attends a Fat Fighters meeting with the unceasingly rude weight-loss coach Marjorie Dawes.

Dawes introduces Rosie to the group like this:

I know you had your own talk show – until Ellen DeGeneres filled your spot. And then it says here, also, that you’ve been in some movies: A League of Their Own, The Flintstones, Sleepless in Seattle. I’ve seen that one. I don’t remember you in it, but we’ll take your word for it. And it says here that you are a lesbian. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.
The sketch goes on to reveal Marjorie as a homophobe, a racist and a woman who is altogether without self-awareness.

“this is the funniest show / ever / fair warning – a few curses / i am in the 3rd sketch,” Rosie opined on Tuesday.

Some gay rights activists don’t agree with Ro. This week, a spokesman for the West Hollywood Gay and Lesbian Alliance said of Little Britain USA: “This is the most politically incorrect, offensive and obnoxious material ever seen in this country.”

HBO, however, says that their goal is to challenge stereotypes of weight, race, gender, and gay and lesbian relationships with the over-the-top characters in Little Britain USA. (I guess it’s kind of like bridging a gap with a bunch of Borat DVDs.)

A few clips of the show have already been released online, including this one where The Only Gay Guy on Campus realizes that he’s living next door to a lesbian couple. He concludes that his status as the Only Gay Guy isn’t really challenged because his neighbors are lesbians, which “isn’t really gay, is it?” Little Britain USA will premiere on HBO in the U.S. and on The Movie Network in Canada on Sept. 28th at 10:30 p.m. EST, and will then be shown a week later on BBC One in Britain.

If that’s not enough Rosie for you, you can tune into the Home Shopping Network on September 21 at noon, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. as they offer up Season One of The Rosie O’Donnell Show on DVD.
