ELLEN AND PORTIA ANNOUNCE PLANS TO TIE THE LESBIAN KNOT; SALLY KERN PRESUMABLY NOT INVITED TO TO THE WEDDING
On the heels of the ruling by the California Supreme Court yesterday that overturned the state ban on gay marriage, Ellen DeGeneres reportedly surprised the audience at the taping of her show yesterday with the announcement that she and Portia de Rossi are getting married. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause, according to sources at the taping of the episode (which airs today).
Chief Justice Ronald George wrote for the majority in a 121-page opinion, “In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual’s capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual’s sexual orientation.”
The ruling means that as of next month, California may become the only other U.S. state besides Massachusetts in which it is legal for gay couples to get married.
I say "may" because opponents are asking the court to stay its judgment pending proposed legislation in November that would amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage.
Also on the ballot in the November election? Legislation that would ban marriage for anyone named Britney Spears or Star Jones, or anyone who meets on a reality TV dating show.
Friday morning update: watch a clip of Ellen’s announcement on her website now! (thanks to Angie5x5 for the tip!)
THIS IS ONE SWEEPS KISS I CAN GET BEHIND
The Callie Torres-Erica Hahn romance we speculated about recently got kicked up a notch on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy when Erica (Brooke Smith) kissed Callie (Sara Ramirez) in an elevator.
True, she supposedly kissed Torres to taunt Sloane (Eric Dane), and all the threesome talk is clearly playing to the straight audience. But it also provided good cover for the characters to flirt with each other.
Most importantly, we haven’t seen a kiss that steamy on network television since, well, I can’t remember — and Callie’s expression afterwards says she knows it, too.
Watch it for yourself:
Next week is Grey‘s two-hour season finale, which will presumably answer some of our questions. Is Callie gay/bi? Is Erica? Will one of them finally cross the line and take their relationship to the next level?
Will Kate Walsh please leave her stupid, annoying spin-off and come back to Grey’s? (Alright, so I know that’s not going to happen, but Kate needs to come back to this show.)
