HAPPIEST GAY STEREOTYPES
The official site for Rick
& Steve, Logo’s new animated series debuting July 10th, now has bios
for the lesbian characters, and I have to admit, they’re pretty clever. First,
we have Kirsten, Rick’s best friend and a lipstick lesbian:
According to her bio, Kirsten "hopes to make a living from her art some day, it’s been really promising, she’s had shows in three espresso shops. She met Dana three years ago when their U-Hauls collided at a busy intersection. They moved in together 27 minutes later. Kirsten’s naive optimism and passionate philanthropy make her both a dependable friend and an easy target. While you can always count on her to lend a hand, her penchant for neurosis sometimes renders her useless. Kirsten’s ideal weekend is spent exploring her vagina and reading self-help books."
Now meet Dana, "Kirsten’s misanthropic, cynical, and very butch wife":
According to her bio, "Dana is in touch with her Jewish heritage, but it’s a political relationship, not a spiritual one. Despite her angry veneer, her hope is to make this world an all-out celebration of diversity and bully objectors into doing the same thing … Dana’s ideal weekend starts with putting on a CD by her favorite band, the Lesbohemians, burning some incense, and adding a fourth garage to their house."
OK, that last line really made me laugh, since it’s a running
joke at our house that it’s never a good idea to leave Lori at
home alone with a power drill and too much free time.
But I’m a little bummed that we’re getting yet another lesbian
story line that revolves around getting pregnant —
and on a show written by a gay man, no less.
On the other hand, the insemination story line seems to be used
primarily as a jumping-off point to explore the characters’ interpersonal relationships.
And the whole point of this show is to make fun of LGBT stereotypes by taking
them to their extreme, so no one — not even the cat — is spared.
