British music rag NME has published their annual “Cool List” and not only did five (count’ em!) women make the top 10, but out lesbian punk singer Beth Ditto of The Gossip landed at number one.
The Cool List’s top 10:
- Beth Ditto (The Gossip)
- Faris Rotter (The Horrors)
- Lily Allen
- Jarvis Cocker
- Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
- Kieren Webster (The View)
- Kate Jackson (The Long Blondes)
- Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance)
- Thom Yorke (Radiohead)
- Lovefoxxx (CSS)
If you haven’t already done so, you should definitely check out The Gossip’s CD Standing In the Way of Control. The title track is an ass-kicker, and gets bonus points for being a rant against right-wing homophobia.
The official NME sound byte about Ditto and the other women on the list (by NME editor Conor McNicholas) goes like this: “This year’s Cool List is a testament to the raft of hugely talented women who have taken hold of the music scene in 2006. From Beth to Lily to Karen, they’ve brought new energy to a scene dominated by men. They’re also living proof that you can still rock a crowd when you’re wearing stilettos.”
