Remember a few months ago when Sarah Warn reported in her Best.Lesbian.Week.Ever. column that Eva Longoria was pining for a “lesbian fling” on Desperate Housewives? Well, someone as powerful as Marc Cherry must have been listening from above, because several (questionable) international news outlets are reporting that Eva’s lesbian dreams will come true when she co-stars with Beyoncé Knowles in the big screen production of Tipping the Velvet.
Sofia Coppola is reportedly hoping to direct the film based on Sarah Waters’ popular novel about a turn of the century music hall star and her lover. Beyoncé, according to LifeStyleExtra.com, cites the popularity of Brokeback Mountain and “thinks it is time the world was treated to a classic lesbian love story.” (What, she’s never seen Bar Girls?)
You may recall that the BBC already produced its own mini-series version of the novel to mixed reviews but I don’t think that’s enough reason not to remake it for the big screen. (Let’s just say it was no Fingersmith.)
Still, if I were you I would hold off on pre-ordering those Moviefone tickets as there is no mention of the film being in production on IMDb.com or reports from rags like the Los Angeles Times, New York Times or even the New York Post substantiating this rumor. So if this all-star version of Tipping the Velvet sounds like your dream come true, then scan those obscure international “news” sources via Google.com for more details.
