A weekly column highlighting lesbianism in pop culture

SO CRUELLA DE VILLE WASN'T AVAILABLE?
Quick, who is the person you'd least like to see play a lesbian on TV? If you said The Apprentice's stomach-curdling former contestant Omarosa, you're in for a very unpleasant surprise: she has managed to parlay her 15 minutes of fame into a guest role on the season premiere of the UPN sitcom Girlfriends on September 20th playing a lesbian who thinks Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) has had an affair with her girlfriend. Because black lesbians don't have enough of a visibility problem already...
Speaking of Girlfriends, are lesbians running that show? They seem to have lesbian themes or characters on at least a few episodes a season.

Not that I'm complaining, mind you, I just keep waiting for the other shoe to drop--oh wait, I guess that explains Omarosa's role.

REALITY ROUNDUP
While there don't appear to be any lesbians among the just-announced contestants on the third season of America's Next Top Model or the second season of the Donald Trump business reality show The Apprentice, the latter's 28-year-old venture capitalist Ivana lists The L Word as one of her favorite TV shows in her Friendster profile. Although she lives with her fiance Brian, the fact that she's lesbian-friendly--and one of the few Asian American reality show contestants on TV--at least gives us someone to root for.

Lesbian contestant Cynthia Weis on Animal Planet's reality show King of the Jungle (and by "king" we don't mean "drag king") was the latest contestant to leave the jungle this week. But lesbian reality fans can take solace in the fact that next week, we get to start counting down the weeks till the lesbians get kicked off of Survivor.

ADVERTISING ROUNDUP
CNN has refused to air an ad by the Log Cabin Republicans that it dubs "too controversial" because it urges Republicans to stop focusing on gay marriage and to concentrate on what unites them rather than what divides them (even though it's not too controversial for the FOX network, which has been running the ad). The ad includes clips of former President Ronald Reagan speaking at the 1992 Republican National Convention, as well as Reverend Fred Phelps holding a "God Hates Fags" sign at the funeral of Matthew Sheppard."

Susan Sarandon, meanwhile, has teamed up with GLAAD to star in a public service announcement in which she picks petals off a flower and chants "he loves me, he loves me not," then asks the camera whether it would matter if she was saying "she loves me, she loves me not," because "love is love is love." Well, it might not matter to most straight people, but I know a few lesbians who would care!

YET ANOTHER REASON REPUBLICANS SHOULDN'T PROCREATE
In a recent interview with Michaelangelo Signorille on Sirius OutQ Radio, Illinois Republican U.S. Senate candidate Alan Keyes said Vice President Dick Cheney's gay daughter Mary is "by definition" a "selfish hedonist" because of her sexual orientation. The remark was quickly picked up by major news outlets and resulted in a wave of denouncements by several other Republicans. But Keyes maintained his position and insisted at an Illinois caucus a few days later that "If my own daughter were a homosexual or a lesbian, I would love my daughter but I would tell my daughter that she was in sin."

This followed Dick Cheney's much-publicized remarks a week earlier that gay marriage is an issue that should be left up to the state, which is "I support my daughter" in Republican-speak.

BUT TELL US HOW YOU REALLY FEEL, PARIS
The New York Post reported that Paris Hilton and Christina Aguilera "suddenly started making out" at a rooftop party last week, but Paris Hilton's publicists later denied the incident, telling E! Online's Ted Casablanca, "Paris hates kissing girls. Even when she and Carmen Electra did it—hated it!”

THE LATEST ON THE L WORD
Showtime has begun running a promo for the second season of The L Word which highlights Shane's new (short) haircut, Dana and Alice's ongoing flirtation, Bette and Tina's ongoing separation, the beginning (and end?) of Ivan and Kit's relationship, and Robin's inexplicable ongoing fascination with Jenny.

In Canada this week, the CH channel clearly underestimated the fanaticism of its L Word fans when it delayed the air dates of the final two episodes of the series without telling viewers, prompting a flood of frantic inquiries until it was finally announced that the last two episodes would air on September 4th and 19th respectively. Hopefully the U.K., Denmark and Norway, which each started airing the first season of The L Word this week, won't make the same mistake.

That's it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of
