“Kim … this is the worst thing you have ever written. Not everybody is as obsessed with lesbianism as you are. For gawd's sake, get over yourself.”

“I think you do what Ellen and Seinfeld and some others do so well. You take the tiny little things that would otherwise get glossed over and you say hey wait a minute … look at this … That is an important thing … You are doing a lot of good. I'm glad you're one of US!”

Sure, I could have been the manager of a midtown Sir Speedy, but being a columnist is so much more fun!
I have, without a doubt, the best job in media. Even if some of you don't agree with my career choice, I couldn't be happier.
Last month I celebrated the one-year anniversary of Don't Quote Me. Okay, I didn't party in the sense that I drank more than I usually do, but the occasion prompted me to look back at the emails you've sent over the course of the year and reflect on how much you've moved, inspired and entertained me. Each and every one of you who has taken the time to write has made a difference in my life and shown me that what I do has value. And I'm extremely grateful.
You've also taught me a great deal-- not only about your attitudes toward GLBT visibility in the media, but also about you personally.
You are an intelligent and extremely fierce bunch, as independent as you are part of community. You stretch from my own tiny corner of the world to countries I will probably never visit. You are gay and straight, and somewhere in between. You are male and female, and somewhere in between. You're in the closet, and you're out. You are the famous and the fans of the famous--writers, producers, models, actresses, artists, teachers, students, mothers, fathers, movers and shakers… you get the picture.
While the vast majority of you would fall under the category of ‘average media consumer,' many of you have more than just a passing interest in entertainment and publishing. This watchdog is being watched, and with the exception of the column called “Don't Quote Me: Kate Moennig and Sarah Shahi on The L Word,” my commentary has, for the most part, been well received by even the most demanding and media savvy of you.
The rest of you, a very small percentage, have--how can I put this?--a very deep emotional investment in your favorite shows and celebrities. You are true fans--literal fanatics! I wouldn't trust any of you--straight or gay--alone with Jodie Foster, Angelina Jolie, or Sarah Shahi. For vastly different reasons I also wouldn't trust some of you with The L Word's "Jenny" and "Max"… and a razor.
