Don’t Quote Me: Lesbian Sex and The Religious Right (page 2)

That’s tame language compared to the Armageddon-ish diatribe on the impact of anal sex on society. Not only does Diggs write as if no Christian conservative has ever thought of anal sex—never mind enjoyed it—but also he implies that the reason your health care sucks, your privacy is being invaded, and there’s no cure for cancer is because of the sexual practices of gay men—not lesbians:

"Men who have sex with men account for the lion’s share of the increasing number of cases in America of sexually transmitted infections that are not generally spread through sexual contact."

“The consequences of homosexual activity have significantly altered the delivery of medical care to the population at-large. With the increased incidence of STD organisms in unexpected places, simple sore throat is no longer so simple. Doctors must now ask probing questions of their patients or risk making a misdiagnosis. The evaluation of a sore throat must now include questions about oral and anal sex.”

“Even though nearly 11 million people in America are directly affected by cancer, compared to slightly more than three-quarters of a million with AIDS, AIDS spending per patient is more than seven times that for cancer. The inequity for diabetes and heart disease is even more striking. Consequently, the disproportionate amount of money spent on AIDS detracts from research into cures for diseases that affect more people.”

What about all the straight people with STDs and AIDS? They’re victims, silly, not predators.

One of the most revealing aspects of the report is that its language suggests a conscious effort was made to keep lesbians palatable and desirable, despite the fact that we’re, by definition, just as gay as gay men. The lesson learned is that gay people are evil only to the extent of how repulsive they are to straight men. A lesbian can’t be more inoffensive than when she’s happily being fucked by a man, after all. It’s all relative—the Evil Meter and the Get-Your-Rocks-Off Meter are in direct relation to one another.

Diggs could have described HPV and trichomoniasis in detail. He could have included frightening descriptions of vaginal warts and Chlamydia bacteria. He could have included a sentence or two about dirty dildos and dental dams. But he didn’t.

Instead, he claims to be somewhat stumped by lesbians because, he insists, we’re hard to define. Moreover, while we might be hard to define, one thing Diggs knows for sure is that we sleep with men—a lot of men:

“Among the difficulties in establishing the pathologies associated with lesbianism is the problem of defining who is a lesbian. Study after study documents that the overwhelming majority of self-described lesbians have had sex with men. Australian researchers at an STD clinic found that only 7 percent of their lesbian sample had never had sexual contact with a male. Not only did lesbians commonly have sex with men, but with lots of men. They were 4.5 times as likely as exclusively heterosexual controls to have had more than 50 lifetime male sex partners. Consequently, the lesbians’ median number of male partners was twice that of exclusively heterosexual women.”

Lesbians are hard to find, but when we’re found, we’re practically straight. Classic! Are the men of the religious right channeling Christ or Baba Booey?

Men are horny creatures. That’s not news. Men also rule the world. Let’s not kid ourselves. Women might be present during conversations, offered an opportunity to contribute to the discussion, to “entertain” with ideas, but when all is said and done, the laws and credos of politics, cultures, economics and religions are all results of the thoughts and deeds of men. So, it makes sense that religious-right leaders in their efforts to “educate” the world on the sins of homosexuality would give lesbians a bit of a break.

After all, the straight man’s lesbian fantasy is most successful when, in the end, the lesbian is no longer a lesbian.

This column raises more questions than it answers, so read Diggs’ report yourself—question his sources and motivation. Question me. But, more importantly, ask yourself questions. Is the religious right obsessed with gay sex? Are members of the religious right clinging to their lesbian fantasies because they believe those fantasies are proof of their heterosexuality?

If lesbians fall under some sacred territory in the minds of men, but lesbian sex is such a sin, why aren’t the women of the religious right picking up where their men are slacking?
