LESBIANS
ON TV
Ivette managed
to stay closeted this week on Big Brother 6
(CBS), but her secret may not be safe for long: blond waitress
contestant Janelle whispered one night to friend Ashlea, "I
think Ivette's a dyke." Not eloquently put, but not wrong,
either.
Gay
contestant Jessica narrowly avoided elimination on this week's
episode of Hell's Kitchen (Fox), and is now one of
the four finalists for the top prize of running her own restaurant.
Melanie
and Lindsay finally reunited on Queer
as Folk. And by "reunited" I mean "had
sex on the kitchen table."

LESBIAN PASSIONS
NBC soap Passions will turn one of its African American
female characters gay
later this summer. She'll be the first lesbian or bi woman of color
on daytime television, and if the other characters on this show
are any indication, probably the craziest, too. Think a lesbian
Omarosa doing crack in the middle of a Tsunami with her lover who
turns out to be her half-sister. Yeah, that kind of crazy.
Not
that there's anything wrong with that.
EMMY NOMS
The nominations for the 2005 Emmy Awards were announced yesterday,
and openly lesbian/bi actresses Cynthia
Nixon and Megan Mullaly
were nominated for their performances in the HBO movie Warm
Springs (Actress, Miniseries or Movie) and Will and Grace
(Supporting Actress, Comedy Series) respectively, while Portia
de Rossi's comedy series Arrested
Development received several nods, as well (although she
wasn't nominated as an individual).
The
HBO movie Lackawanna
Blues, which featured an African American butch lesbian,
was nominated in the Made-for-TV Movie category, while Ossie Davis
received a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series
for his guest role as Bette's father on The
L Word, the only nomination the series received.
None
of the actors on Queer as Folk received nominations, and
neither did Law
and Order's Elisabeth Rohm, who promptly asked, "Is
it because I'm a lesbian?"
FORM
OF: A BISEXUAL MUTANT PROSTITUTE
Tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams are reportedly competing
against each other trying to land a part in the upcoming X-Men movie
X-3. The role is a bisexual mutant prostitute whose special
power is the ability to seduce anyone. I say cast both of them,
give the other one the power to turn into a bucket of ice, call
them the new Bisexual Wonder Twins, and be done with it.
HOMO
HIP HOP
Out gay rappers, hip hop artists, and slam poets are coming together
in NYC this weekend for Peace
Out East, an annual festival celebrating queer hip hoppers like
Paradigm and
Tina G.
Hip
hop mogul Russell Simmons has a guest role in an episode of the
upcoming season of The L Word. "I think there's lot
of girls who are struggling with their sexuality and they're living
in the Bible Belt in America or somewhere and they're being abused
for having a certain sexual orientation," he said
at a recent event in Vancouver. "They're inspired by The
L Word. They deserve something like The L Word."
But
do we deserve Jenny's storyline, Russell? I mean, really, do we?
HAPPY
ENDINGS?
The ensemble film Happy Endings, by gay director Don Roos,
opens in theaters today, and among the myriad of characters in the
mix are Sarah Clarke and Laura Dern as a lesbian couple who may
or may not have used the sperm of their gay friend to father their
child.
Just
what we need: more lesbians whose storylines are reduced to parenting
issues. We just can't get enough of that on TV, now we're going
to pay to see it at the theater? Please don't let this be the beginning
of a new trend at the box office. "Coming soon to a movie theater
near you: The Fantastic Four Lesbian Mothers, and My
Lesbian Mother and the Chocolate Factory!"
Wake
me when it's over.
That's
it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of
