Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.
by Sarah Warn

A weekly column highlighting lesbianism in pop culture

Friday, April 1, 2005

TV ROUNDUP
This week, Helena and Tina finally hooked up on The L Word; lesbian contestant Rachel Robinson is still on The Inferno 2; Honey Labrador continues to give advice on Queer Eye for the Straight Girl; and bisexual contestant Michelle survived a worsening skin condition to compete another day on America's Next Top Model.

SIN CITY OPENS THIS WEEKEND
Sin City, the stylish cinematic adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novels opens this weekend, with a cast of beautiful women including Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jamie King, Brittany Murphy, Devon Aoki, and Alexis Bledel (okay, and some guys, like Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, and Bruce Willis, but who cares?)

Carla Gugino also has a small role as a "lesbian parole officer who prances around in the nude," as one movie reviewer puts it. But forget the token, pointless lesbian--I just want to see Rory as a hooker!

PRETTY, WITTY AND GAY?
Cynthia Nixon--who has been cast as the lead in the upcoming Broadway revival of Talley's Folly--brought her girlfriend Christine Marinoni to Sarah Jessica Parker's 40th birthday party last week, the first time the couple has attended a high-profile public event together. During the party, Nixon sang "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," and joked "now that I've become a lesbian, I don't wear any of those again" when she changed the lyrics to refer to Parker's Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik shoes.

Clearly Nixon didn't read the Lesbian Rule Book close enough: now that she's on our team, she can't wear attractive shoes or make jokes. It interferes with being angry and hating men.

MARY CHENEY'S WRITING A MEMOIR...
...and I'm guessing we won't have to worry about her making too many jokes.

ROSIE JONES
Out LPGA golfer Rosie Jones took second place at this week's high-profile Nabisco tournament in Palm Springs--known as Dinah Shores in the lesbian world--after losing to Annika Sorenstam. Jones and sponsor Olivia Travel also announced a renewal of their relationship. This comes on the heels of Olivia's announcement last week that it has become the sponsor of lesbian tennis player Martina Navratilova, as well.

Next week: Olivia Travel becomes the official sponsor of Angelina Jolie!

That's it for this week! There won't be a new column next Friday, so check back on Friday, April 15th for a new installment of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever.
