D.E.B.S.
OPENS IN 7 CITIES THIS WEEKEND
It's
not exactly nationwide, but it's going to roll out to more theaters
over the next few weeks (it better, or there are going to be a lot
of angry suburban lesbians!)
TELL
US SOMETHING WE DON'T KNOW
Angelina Jolie was named
sexiest woman in the world by FHM magazine this week, making
it the eleventy billionth time she's won a "sexiest woman"
poll (slightly edging out her 10.999 billion wins in the Female
Celebrity I'd Most Like to Sleep With poll category). Seriously,
guys, why don't you have a poll for the Sexiest Woman Who Isn't
Angelina Jolie, just to give the other women a shot?
AND
THE NAME REFERS TO EXPERTISE IN PICKPOCKETING, NOT, ER, OTHER THINGS
Across the pond, the three-part BBC adaptation of Sarah
Waters book Fingersmith debuts this weekend. Lesbians have
been eagerly awaiting this since the last adaptation of a Waters
book--Tipping
the Velvet--put the "L" in "Victorian England."
With another all-star cast (including Sally Hawkins and Imelda Staunton),
we're keeping our fingers crossed that Fingersmith will
be just as good--and that BBC America won't edit it into a Jane
Austen novel before airing it here.
In
other breaking British news, Leah Bracknell, the actress who plays
lesbian vet Zoe Tate on long-running British soap Emmerdale,
will be leaving the show for an unspecified amount of time beginning
this fall, in order to acquire her yoga certification. Viewers are
told to expect a dramatic departure storyline (on a soap? I'm shocked).
OLIVIA
AND MARTINA
Out lesbian tennis player Martina Navratilova has signed
on as the new spokesperson for lesbian travel company Olivia Travel.
Navratilova will play her matches while wearing the Olivia logo
on her shirt and shorts. She will also make personal appearances
on behalf of Olivia and appear in company advertising.
This
is the first time in her lengthy career that Navratilova's official
tour sponsor will be a gay company, and the second time Olivia has
sponsored an openly gay athlete (the first was LPGA Rosie Jones);
it's also the third time I wished I had paid more attention in the
tennis classes my parents made me take in middle school. Damn you,
Martina, that should have been me up there!
That's
it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of
