MELISSA, MEET DOROTHY
Melissa Etheridge told Time magazine
this week that the development of her ABC sitcom, announced
a year ago, is now moving forward again. Etheridge describes
it as what "my life might have been like had I not
left to find my fame and fortune, and stayed in Kansas and
became a teacher and been gay and dealt with life there."
It's a win-win situation for both sides of the political
spectrum: lesbians will get another prominent lesbian character
on TV, and the Religious Right will have a high-profile
homosexual to blame the next time a tornado hits Kansas.
FEMALE
COMICS FEST
A reader wrote recently to let me know about a conference
in Newark, NJ this weekend called Onna!,
which she described as "a collaboration between a girls
in anime/manga convention, and a lesbians in anime/manga
event. They've created Onna! to expand to female representation
in Western comics/animation as well. Pretty much if you're
a fan of any of these things it's THE place to be. It's
like an event that has a pink ribbon in one hand, and a
Hello Kitty vibrator in the other." Now there's
a logo I'd like to see!
THE
BATTLE OVER GAY TEENS
Time magazine put GLBT teens on the cover
of its most recent issue (Oct 10 issue, on stands now),
with the headline "The Battle Over Gay Teens."
The extensive article explores the "culture war"
over gay teens, and cites the latest research and statistics
about GLBT teens, including the fact that they're coming
out younger than ever. Definitely
worth a read!
NEXT
WEEK ON DVD: PORTIA, LESBIAN SOCCER MOMS, AND LOTS OF BLOOD
Next Tuesday on DVD, we have the release of the
second season of Arrested
Development, co-starring Portia de Rossi (review);
the French horror import High
Tension (review);
and the Will Ferrell comedy Kicking
and Screaming, which features lesbian soccer moms
(review)
who don't do much but show up to make the movie look hip.
The
really good DVD news is that the third
season of Once and Again has a release date:
January 10, 2006! This is the long-awaited season where
Evan Rachel Wood's Jessie falls for a pre-O.C.
Mischa Barton, and unlike Mischa's girlfriend on that other
show, doesn't turn inexplicably stalkerish and get dumped
for a boy (Jessie would look cool with a purple streak in
her hair, though).
That's
it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment
of Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. or read past
installments of Best. Lesbian.
Week. Ever.
