L
IS FOR LOTS OF HAPPY LESBIANS
To the delight of lesbians around the world, Showtime announced
this week that The L Word
has been renewed for a third season. Another season of Bette
and Tina! Dana and Alice! Jenny and her indecisiveness...wait, on
second thought, maybe we should think about this some more...
Bad
news for Queer as Folk fans,
though: the series will be concluding its run after its fifth season,
which debuts in May.
PROMISES,
PROMISES
MTV Networks has pushed off the launch of its new gay channel Logo
until June 30th. The channel was originally slated to go live in
February, but has been delayed to expand both the content and the
distribution. In addition to lining up movies and reality shows,
the channel is creating documentaries about gay fraternities and
sororities, the LGBT Hispanic experience, gay rugby, the gay rodeo
circuit, and gays in space.
(Okay,
I made that last one up, but it could work! I even have some recommendations
for MTV as to who to send up there--have you heard of Jenny Schecter?
No? Let me introduce you...)
NICOLE SETS THE RECORD, ER, STRAIGHT
In a
new interview with Playboy magazine, Nicole Kidman gave
this response when asked whether she had any interest in romance
with the same sex: "It would be far easier to go 'Oh, I wish
I loved women!' But I don't. I mean, I love them, but physically,
they just don't do it for me. I love the way a man thinks. I love
the way a man smells. I love the way men look...I'm hooked on the
male physique--hooked on it!"
And
by "far easier," I'm sure she meant "far more difficult
and potentially career-limiting." But same thing, really.
TV
ROUNDUP
This
week's episode of Las
Vegas featured lesbian stereotypes on parade; Joey
set up his married female neighbor with a lesbian neighbor; Law
and Order unexpectedly outed one of its main characters
in her final scene on the series; and spinoff Queer
Eye for the Straight Girl launched with a lesbian "gal
pal." Plus Tammy Lynn Michaels and Lily Tomlin played straight
women on Committed
and Will & Grace, respectively.
On
MTV's Battle
of the Sexes 2, popular bi contestant Ruthie was voted
off the island, er, ranch, which leaves lesbian Sophia as the sole
remaining queer female contestant.
TWICE
AS QUEER IS THREE TIMES AS POPULAR
Bravo's
"Twice as Queer" promotion strategy seems to be paying
off: the Queer Eye for the Straight Girl debut this Tuesday
was "the highest rated premiere in 18-49 and 25-54 in more
than a year," according to Bravo. The episode that followed
on Wednesday night earned ratings that tripled Bravo's season average
during that time period, and this week's second season premiere
of the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy achieved
high ratings, too. Apparently America isn't as sick of us as we
thought.
ELLEN
ROUNDUP
Ellen DeGeneres won both categories she was nominated in at this
year's People's Choice Awards: Funniest Female Star and Best Daytime
Talk Show Host. Meanwhile, the tabloids are going crazy with the
rumor that Alex is looking into suing Ellen for "galimony"
and Portia for alienation of affection.
Because
every time a lesbian couple breaks up, a tabloid gets its wings.
GAYS
ON STRIKE
A&E
is developing a new TV movie about gay marriage called Gays
on Strike. A comedy in the style of In & Out,
the movie is about "a young gay couple who inadvertently spark
a strike by every gay person in America to protest for their right
to get married; the couple then unwillingly become poster children
for gay marriage."
What's
next, a comedy about the hilarious misadventures of Rosa Parks being
denied a seat on the front of the bus? A funny take on Japanese
Americans being put in internment camps?
'Cause
unequal civil rights? That's comedy gold.
That's
it for this week! Check back next Friday for a new installment of
