Before dinner, everyone's sitting in the living room having drinks. James remarks how nice the view is, “especially from here,” as he admires Jesse through the open French doors leading to the kitchen. Jesse's scurrying around, oblivious to the fact that his gluteus is being eyed to the maximus.
Dinner is served, and the conversation goes something like this. Mimi says to Jackie's mom, “Karen, do you think they should legalize gay marriage?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I just don't.”
Scintillating repartee.
Jackie sits silently, uncomfortably. I don't know what else she expected, with the combination of people at the table. The idea that Mimi would carry Jackie's fertilized egg doesn't go over very well with Karen, who says, “I think you should each carry your own baby.” She really wants nothing to do with Mimi.
Then, Jackie, who's lapsed into total denial, asks, “You'd come to the wedding, right?”
Her mom replies, “No, I don't know.” But who would want to miss Jackie and Mimi exchanging vows? Jackie promising to love, honor and apologize; Mimi swearing to pout, bite and throw breakables 'til death do they part--or 'til they kill each other.
Mimi tries to start another debate and get good ol' Mom to bring out the Bible quotes and right-wing rhetoric, but Karen isn't playing. “I don't have to prove anything to you, and I have no desire to,” she says. Mimi's beyond insulted--the woman won't even fight with her! That does not equal love in Mimiland. Karen sits there, working her spoon around her dessert cup.
Meanwhile, Nipples is still gushing about Jesse: “A man who will cook; I'm so there.” Erin's nameless fiancé agrees, “That's a big plus.”
Alas, Jesse shares with us, “There are five types that aren't your type. He's one of those types.” What are the five types? I want to know. I won't be able to sleep tonight.
The morning after the dinner party, Jackie and her mom are sitting on the patio by the pool. Mom says, “I wasn't there for you. Maybe that's why you seek the affection of a woman. It's something I still grieve over.”
You feel for Jackie when she says, “That's sad, because the last thing you want is them not supporting your love relationship, when all you want to do is talk.” Jackie's still trying to sell Mimi.“I want to get married someday and set up house with a woman,” she tells her mom. “I know that you and Mimi have issues, but she's got a lot of sweetness to her.”
Mom says, “I just don't trust her.”
Jackie says sadly, “You're going to miss a lot of my life.”
It's terribly sunny out by the pool, and they're both squinting like crazy. Or maybe that's the harsh glare of seeing your family for who they really are. Jackie puts on sunglasses while her mom closes her eyes.
