The
Other Storylines
It's hard to distinguish the other characters from
the Alex-Marissa plot this week, as everyone seems to be
trying their hardest to break them apart. Julie, when not
asking Sandy for help with Lance the skeevy pornographer,
is repeatedly calling and visiting Marissa, urging her to
come home. She eventually goes to Ryan to persuade her to
come back.
Seth, on the other hand, believes that last year was much
better--a reference to the writing last season, perhaps?
Summer is infuriated by his cupid-like attempts to bring
Marissa and Ryan together, which involve telling Marissa
that Ryan should build the bonfire for the pep rally she
is organizing. He also tries on his clothes from last year,
because, you know, normal people do not wear clothes a year
old. Yeah. Throughout the episode, Seth claims that Marissa
and Ryan are meant to be together, while Summer disagrees,
calling them "combustive."
Kirsten,
meanwhile, is disgusted to find the new editor of Newport
Living drunk and listening to the Pixies. She tempts
him away from self-pitying alcoholism with a copy of his
old revolutionary magazine, which Sandy used to read religiously.
Sandy,
after trying to teach Kirsten golf, helps Julie deal with
her blackmailing ex-boyfriend by buying the rights to the
porno film so that Lance can't leak it after the blackmail
money has been paid.
The
Alex-Marissa Storyline
The first (short) glimpse we have of Alex and Marissa
is when Alex drops Marissa off for school. When Summer and
Marissa are eating lunch they talk about Alex, and Marissa
seems a tad apathetic, although stating things between her
and Alex are "really great." When Ryan comes over
to join them, Summer looks on suspiciously as Marissa asks
him to build the bonfire (how cool is Summer is as a best
friend? I want one!)
After
lunch, Marissa gets a call from Alex, who wants to know
what they're doing after school, as they haven't had much
time to hang out. Marissa, although agreeing that they should
be spending more time together, tells her she's working
on a project with Ryan after school. When Alex hears this,
she gets a little tenser than she already is, and jealously
asks what they are working on, and why Marissa didn't tell
her about the Pep Rally. Marissa points out that Alex isn't
into the whole school-spirit thing (and Marissa is?). When
Alex asks her if she'll see her at home, Marissa gets all
distracted by Ryan walking past, and Alex has to say "hello?"
before Marissa quickly gets off the phone, leaving Alex
holding the phone looking angry and a little upset.
While
Julie visits Marissa at Alex's house and pleads with her
to come home, Alex visits Seth, asking his advice. Sure,
go to the guy who is trying to get your girlfriend back
with her ex for relationship advice. Alex exasperatedly
throws a pillow at him when he asks for photos or a video
of them to help him with his advice, then proceeds to tell
him that she has a "sense" about Marissa and Ryan,
and is worried that something is going on. Seth quips that
if she had been this sensitive and neurotic when they were
dating, things might have worked out, to which Alex replies,
"I just really, really, have fallen hard for this girl."
She asks a speechless Seth whether she is fighting a lost
cause, whether Marissa and Ryan are a couple who will just
always be together. Seth asks her if this is about the mall,
and then proceeds to reveal to Alex about how Marissa and
Ryan shared a tent, something which Marissa failed to mention
to her. Alex freaks out, and leaves.
