The
Alex-Marissa Storyline
Marissa first appears in the episode by turning
the laundry pink. Alex berates her for the laundry snafu
and asks her if she's found an after-school job yet. Marissa
hasn't, and wants to do something fun, but Alex has to work.
They peck cheeks, before Alex tells her to avoid their landlord.
While
Marissa is cleaning up the multiple cans and rubbish scattered
around the house, Summer comes over, inviting her to the
mall. So Alex comes home to an empty house, and pink laundry
still in disarray on the sofa. She calls Marissa's mobile,
but doesn't get her, and leaves a message, casually asking
her where she is.
When
they decide to stay in the closed mall, Seth, Summer and
Marissa all phone to make excuses--only Seth actually tells
the truth to his parents. Anyhow, Marissa leaves a message
on Alex's phone (don't people ever answer the phone on this
show?) saying she went over to her mom's to do the laundry
and decided to stay the night--the least plausible excuse,
ever.
Alex
obviously sees through this excuse, or just wants to see
Marissa, and so goes over to the Cooper-Nichol house, walking
in on Julie watching (her own) porn. Julie tells Alex Marissa
isn't here.
JULIE:
I guess I'm not the only one she lies to, huh? (Alex looks
wary) I know my daughter. I only let her go with you because
I knew within a matter of time she would be back. As much
as Marissa likes to complain, she had a very nice life
thanks to me. Which she will miss once the novelty wears
off--which I am guessing is about now.
ALEX: (pauses) Marissa... Marissa's not happy.
JULIE: Marissa and happy parted ways around her sixteenth
birthday. But have you met her new friends, sullen and
vindictive?
ALEX: No. The only ones she's brought over to the house
are...scared and overwhelmed.
Julie
then tells her, because she likes Alex's pants, that Alex
is this week's yard guy, and that Marissa's true love looked
a lot different in a wifebeater. Alex looks upset, and tells
Julie that she
doesn't know that. And, personally, I'm with Alex--she looks
a lot better in a wifebeater than Ryan.
Later,
while the Fantastic Four are bonding more, there is a shot
of Alex, asleep in front of the television, the pink laundry
folded neatly in piles on the floor.
The
end of the episode ends with Marissa and Ryan eating cheeseburgers.
They talk about how they are like strangers, and flirt with
their chips, while Seth and Summer watch from outside, their
little matchmaking plan unfolding. I officially dislike
Josh Schwartz.
Next
Week: Seth still insists that Ryan and Marissa
are meant to be together, and Summer tells him off for interfering.
Alex sees Ryan and Marissa hug, and tells Ryan (while shoving
him) not to go near her girlfriend again.
