The
Other Storylines
The
episode begins with Ryan coming in to the house, getting
ready for school, and in the process interrupting Seth,
who is on the sofa after staying up all night to watch bad
comic-book movies, try to figure out the plural of the word
"matrix." Ryan tries to tempt him with coffee,
tells him to have a shower, and also tells him that he is
"wallowing." And by wallowing, Ryan means Seth
looks terrible and smells. Seth wants to know if Summer
and Zach had sex, and the uncertainty is killing him. Can
bad hygiene kill?
Meanwhile,
Sandy tells a rightly-annoyed Kirsten that Max's memorial
is just going to be attended by him and his ex-luvah Rebecca,
so they can bond more over his cremated human remains. Sounds
like a party. Kirsten busies herself with Caleb, who wants
to formally adopt Lindsay--much to the shock of Julie, who
persuades him that he should do a DNA test first. Julie
visits Lindsay's mother (who has been oddly lacking in any
of the recent episodes), and warns her about the test, which
prompts Lindsay's mother to try and get Ryan to persuade
Lindsay out of the adoption. At the party that Caleb has
held for the announcement of the adoption, Ryan tells Lindsay
that there is a possibility that Caleb might not be her
father, and Caleb tells her he wants to take the test, causing
Lindsay to run off and then drive away.
Seth
tries to interrogate Zach about a Summer-Zach sexual union,
which leads Summer to beat Seth with a pillow, and to disclose
that, actually, nothing happened in San Diego. We find out
later, when Zach meets up with a now-showered Seth, that
this is because Zach has always had the notion of no premarital
sex, even though he is not strictly religious, yet he feels
that this notion has now changed. He wants to have sex when
the harmony between place and girl is right, and apparently
this is in Tuscany. This revelation causes Seth to give
up and collapse once again into wallowing--although we know
that Summer actually isn't all that interested in doing
it with Zach anyway, as she reveals to Coop (Marissa). Seth
doesn't know this, though and goes around to Summer's telling
her he is over her and cool with Summer and Zach doing it.
Oh, what tangled webs they weave.
Kirsten,
meanwhile is visited by the FBI, and then visits Rebecca,
questioning her about her feelings towards Mr. Lovable Eyebrows.
It turns out that Rebecca does love Sandy, and always will,
causing Kirsten to ask her if she can really let the man
she loves give up his life. Later on, Sandy goes to Rebecca's
hotel and finds her gone, but from a note Rebecca left he
discovers that Kirsten visited her, and he and Kirsten quarrel
over the situation at Caleb's party.
The
Alex-Marissa Storyline
At
the club, Marissa sneaks up behind Alex, and then exchanges
into playful banter. Alex invites Marissa to a party she
is going to have, because some of her friends are coming
down this weekend, sparking Marissa to comment "How
very Newport of you." Alex says that it would be an
opportunity for Marissa to invite Summer, at which point
Alex finds out that Summer doesn't know about their relationship.
Alex tells Marissa that she assumed Marissa would tell her
best friend, but she's okay with Marissa taking her time
to do so; Alex honestly doesn't seem all that bothered that
Summer doesn't know, but while stroking her hair and loosely
hanging her arms around Alex's neck, Marissa tells Alex
that she's ready to tell Summer, as long as Alex's party
doesn't suck.
