Over
at Summer's, Marissa tries to tell her about Alex.
She starts by questioning Summer about San Diego, and if
anything happened with Zach, to which Summer doesn't really
respond. Summer says that she felt bad she left Marissa
alone on Valentine's, to which Marissa responds that she
wasn't really alone, causing Summer to question Marissa
further, and for Marissa to respond that she was with her
mother. Which, well, she was--before she went and kissed
Alex.
Marissa
tries again. She invites Summer to a party--Alex's party--and
then tells her Caleb is holding it. Summer cutely makes
some joke about 'maybe a little shuffle-board, a little
bingo', yet she agrees to come. Before Marissa can try again,
Zach calls Summer, and tells her about Seth's sex-questioning,
causing Summer to cancel lunch with Marissa.
Later,
Marissa goes over to Alex's early, where she finds that
Alex's friends (all girls) have arrived early. Annoyingly,
Alex and Marissa greet each other with a kiss on the cheek.
As Marissa says hi to the room, one of the couples give
each other a knowing look, which Marissa sees. Marissa freaks
out, the combination of a room full of female couples and
her inability to tell Summer causing her to tell Alex she
can't stay, and to blow her off. Alex tries to get her to
stay, but Marissa uses her parents as an excuse --an excuse
that Alex points out isn't valid, as she wouldn't want to
hang out with Cockroach Caleb and her mother in any moment
of sanity, and that she understands if Marissa is freaked
out. Alex really, really, wants Marissa to meet her friends.
Marissa says that she will try and make it later on, after
she has earned points with her parents. Marissa leaves with
another peck on Alex's cheek.
At
Caleb's party, Marissa is hiding in her room reading
a book about punk rock, and Summer comes to find her. Summer
reveals that although it was Zach who didn't want to have
sex in San Diego, she had the Voice of Seth in her head
and didn't want to herself--and doesn't want to in Tuscany
either. Marissa tells Summer to tell Zach that she has changed
her mind, and Summer remarks that she should just trust
him, and that he at least deserves that. This line causes
Marissa to pause, and then to tell Summer the truth.
MARISSA:
I've been dating Alex.
Summer: (looks confused) What?
MARISSA: I mean, Alex and I, we've been dating.
Summer: What? What?!
MARISSA: (upset) Just for a couple of weeks.
Summer: (shocked) Alex. Seth's-Alex?
MARISSA: Mm-hmm.
Summer: Girl-Alex?
MARISSA: Yeah.
Summer: (nodding her head) Huh. Well, who knows?
MARISSA: Uh, just you.
Summer: (still nodding) Huh. So, you and Alex.
MARISSA: Uh uh.
Summer: So, are you like...
MARISSA: No! I don't know. I just, I really like her.
Summer: Well, she is pretty hot.
MARISSA: Hey look, you don't have to say anything. Just...I
really needed to tell you. We're still friends, right?
Summer: Of course we are. Come here. (They hug.) Aww,
this isn't turning you on, right? (Marissa laughs)
Although
it wasn't a coming-out scene as such, as Marissa didn't
own up to being bi or gay, but it was an accurate portrayal
of the shock and acceptance between friends. It was sweet,
important, and well-acted by both the actresses. Afterwards,
Marissa goes over to Alex's, where she is sitting outside
by a fire, looking forlorn. Marissa asks where everyone
is, and Alex tells her that they have gone out to party,
as it turned out Alex wasn't in the mood for one, and Alex
asks about Caleb's party. Marissa
comes and sits down next to her,
MARISSA:
Listen, I got freaked out.
ALEX: I know.
MARISSA: It's just, I tried to tell Summer, and I couldn't.
ALEX: Oh.
MARISSA: Yeah. And then I came here, thinking we'd talk
about it.
ALEX: And you got even more freaked out.
MARISSA: I just figured that if I can't even tell my best
friend, then, maybe I'm not ready for this.
ALEX: So, you're here to break up with me?
MARISSA: (smiles) Then I told her.
ALEX: Wait, you told Summer? About us?
MARISSA: (grinning) Mm hmm. So, where have your friends
gone?
ALEX: Seriously?
MARISSA: (putting her hand on Alex's leg) Well, you still
want me to meet them, don't you?
The
scene is adorable. Mischa Barton's face when she reveals
to Alex that Marissa told Summer is superb, and Olivia Wilde's
hurt-turning-to-glee is equally well portrayed.
Next
week on The O.C: Apparently it's the biggest
OC episode of the season, and because of that,
there's rain. Marissa tells her mother about Alex, Sandy
leaves Kirsten behind to transport Rebecca and ends up smooching
her in a hotel, and Seth implores Summer to give him another
chance before leaving.
