The
Other Storylines:
It's
coming up on Valentine's Day in The
O.C., and for leather jacket-clad Sandy "I used
to be a hippy" Cohen, that means covering the house in
roses. Because, you know, flowers will make sure your wife
forgives you for harboring your fugitive ex-girlfriend without
her knowledge. Of course, Kirsten puts the flowers down the
trash disposal, and by the end of the episode, it looks like
their marriage is going that way as well, when Sandy ditches
Kirsten on Valentine's Day to see Rebecca.
It's
a shame that Caleb couldn't have died instead of Max. He
continues to be his crappy old self, playing pool with Ryan,
then being a bad looser. It's all very boring and complicated,
as the two fight it over Caleb's illegitimate daughter.
Julie Cooper returns, bringing with her the usual blackmail
and bribery she employs to make Marissa's life worse (not
to mention Caleb's, but who cares about Caleb?)
Meanwhile, Seth, Summer, and Zach go off to San Diego--where
Seth can't get over his love for Summer, has too much caffeine,
and ruins the interview at WildStorm after he discovers
that Zach and Summer are going to Italy for Zach's sister's
wedding, and then going camping afterwards. Seth decides
that the universe is officially against him, and that he
should never have coffee ever again.
The
Marissa-Alex Storyline:
Julie Cooper's return is not the greatest news
for Marissa, especially when she is immediately blackmailed
into going out to dinner with her mother under threat of
losing her cell phone. Much sarcastic bantering ensues,
like this:
JULIE:
Marissa, when I was in Europe, I did some real soul-searching.
MARISSA (covering her head with her pillow): I hope you
didn't hurt yourself.
Later, when she is helping out at the club, Marissa talks
to Alex about Julie, and Alex gives Marissa some tips about
handling difficult parents:
ALEX:
Every time my mother channels Satan, I take a deep breath,
count to three, give her a big smile, and say something
like 'Interesting idea mom, I'll give that some thought!'
MARISSA: And that really works?
ALEX: Women like that, they thrive on confrontation, and
if you refuse to engage, there's nothing that they can
really do. Which makes them go even more out of their
heads.
Marissa
comments sarcastically that that sounds like a fun way to
spend an evening. As they're talking, Alex gives Marissa
a blatantly lustful, up-and-down look while Marissa is hanging
posters--one of the best moments of the episode.
