Episode 2 (24 October 2004)
Summary:
-
Thelma
is not at all like Casper, fortunately.
-
Cassie
has taken to wearing a tea cosey on her head.
-
This
is the most hormonal boarding school in the world.
A disco/party with those odd flashing lights –
Cassie saunters merrily over to the bar, and orders a
pint of lager. Thelma would be proud. Cassie then proceeds
to (accidentally) tip the drink on a boy next to her,
who proceeds to try flirting with her, then slithers off
in his cloak of darkness after she scorns him.
Another guy, from Cassie's media class, tries to chat
her up by displaying his knowledge of the Alien
films. I'm sure it's the writers' attempt to add a little
bit of the metaphorical into the show, but Cassie is more
interested in following the slithering lager boy after
Azazeal pops up on the dance floor. Cassie then proceeds
to squirt the lager boy in the face with CO2, and electrocute
him. After he has had a fit and tried to rape a girl,
of course. Maybe it would have been easier with a stake?
The
room of gloom - Cassie cries while looking at
Thelma's bed. Cut to a 'dream' scene, with Cassie and
Thelma making out. In their underwear. With soft lighting.
When Cassie wakes up, she sees Thelma sitting attentively
by her bed, and accuses her of 'stalking' her dreams.
Thelma claims that she wasn't complaining in her dream,
and Cassie whines that she looked like a "whore"
in cherry-covered panties and bra. Thelma and Cassie then
walk (unfortunately fully-clothed) across the school grounds,
talking about Azazeal. It's still rather mysterious and
confusing, and Thelma profoundly states that "..he's
a man. They never make sense."
Cassie
takes this advice to heart, and walks past Troy's car
in her tea cosey hat. He asks her for help with his stranded
car, she tells him that it sounds like he has a flooded
engine. Troy attempts to woo Cassie with his heated seats,
and they have coffee. (Outside a café, not in the
car.) Thelma, your friendly neighbourhood ghost, unsubtly
spies on her and Troy, who is moaning on about the idiocy
of Leon.
The
gothic, gloomy, (and, er, dark) school grounds
- Azazeal smokes a cigarette, while looking wistfully
at a lit window. You expect Michael Jackson to jump out
from behind and do "Thriller" with him.
The
girl's bathroom - Thelma and Cassie continue
their flirtatious bickering, while Thelma goes through
Cassie's makeup, and Cassie tells her off for spying on
her. When Thelma finds a condom in Cassie's bag, Thelma
comments sardonically "you have to try everything
once," causing a reaction of mock-horror from Cassie.
Then Cassie nearly gets strangled by a strange little
blond girl.
Que
the compulsory shower shot, where Thelma is now staring
at Cassie's, er, assets. Cassie chews her out:
Cassie:
It's like living with an old man!
Thelma: You should be grateful I can't
grope you.
Cassie: I am.
Roxanne
and Gemma then enter the bathroom, talking about Roxanne's
latest sex dream, which apparently left her feeling "dirty,"
as it involved girl-on-girl action. When Gemma (and Cassie,
still in the shower) learn that the girl who was "just
using me [Roxanne] for sex... and I enjoyed it" was
Thelma, Cassie looks meaningfully at the still-present
Thelma, who retaliates with "What? Do you know how
frustrating it is to be a lesbian ghost?"
Which
leads the audience to ask, do you know how frustrating
it is to watch a lesbian ghost?
The
garden of mist and foreboding - Azazeal churns
out old favourites like 'you can't fight me', 'death is
inevitable', 'history has a habit of repeating itself',
and other vague comments, while saying how similar Cassie's
soul is to his. As long as she doesn't turn into a green
monster with wings, I'm happy.
The
common room - Leon questions Gemma and Roxanne
about whether they think that Cassie and Thelma slept
together, and which one was "the man", obviously
attempting to reference 'roles', rather than gender. Troy
looks anguished with his pool cue, follows the retreating
Cassie, and asks her out. She surprisingly says no.
The
Grounds - Cassie watches Troy play football in
one of those silly bibs. Thelma joins her, exclaiming:
Thelma: You never watched me play
netball.
Cassie: Well, you were crap.
The
dorm room - Cassie dreams about what Azazeal
said. He watches her, while stroking some material of
her's on her chair. I preferred Thelma's dream.
The
favourite filming spot (aka the grounds) - Cassie
is showing off her ugly hat again. The female teacher
(who practically hit on her in the first episode) joins
her, and pesters Cassie about bunking off, or not letting
people in. Or both. Thelma pops up and tells Cassie to
cry more, or to try self-mutilation. Thelma then proceeds
to let Cassie into the secret that the teacher writes
poor erotic fiction in her spare time.
This
school is officially hormone-centre.
The
duo then find a tomb underneath the tree where the scary
kid was hung from, which confirms her to be Rachel McBain's
daughter (he woman who conjured up Azazeal in the first
place).
The
dining room - Thelma tries to solve the mystery,
and does so by eating a packet of crisps while staring
at McBain's portrait. By her amazing instinct (Jemima
Rooper was in The Famous Five, you know), she
stumbles upon the room she was murdered in, which turns
out to be the place where the child was locked. The room
is covered with exorcist-like drawings of Azazeal, hidden
under canvas sheets.
The
Garden of Mystery - Cassie is obviously not as
impressed with Thelma's discoveries as she is entranced
with Troy being boyish with Leon.
Back
in the dining room - The Erotic Fiction Teacher
(Miss Joe Wilkins) flirts with the headmaster, while talking
about Cassie and Cassie's "fruit-cake" of a
mother. Oh, and, sausages.
In
Miss Wilkins' class - Gemma reads an 'erotic'
passage by Yeats of Zeus raping Leila. Cassie looks wistfully
at Troy, and then arranges to have a drink with him after
class. From swans to drinks – the teenage trail
of thought is obviously not meant to be understood.
In
the common room - Thelma boasts about how she
can eat as much as she likes without putting on a pound.
Cassie confesses to having a date with "golden balls"
(as Thelma names him), and then goes off to get coffee,
leaving Thelma to see that Cassie has drawn the same images
that were on the wall of the little girl's room, all over
her homework. Thelma looks worried, either by the developing
explanation of Azazeal's "history has a habit of
repeating itself," or by Cassie's drawing skills.
In
their bedroom, Thelma completes her fairy-godmother like
status by wearing a big, black tiara, and telling Cassie
to "look after yourself", while then staring
sadly from the entrance of the school. Thelma then troops
around the school, getting inspired by smudged writing
on classroom boards. With torch in mouth, Thelma checks
out Cassie's record in a very un-Nancy Drew like manner,
finding out that Cassie's father is called James McBain,
the same surname as the crazy people.
Meanwhile,
Troy and Cassie play pool in the disco place (is that
all Troy can do, play pool?) with Azazeal looking on,
brooding (for a change).
Next
Week: Where on earth with the mystery go next?
Will Troy ever stop playing pool? And, why does Thelma
seem to pay for sweets and dig up earth, but not be able
to touch human form? These questions will keep us entranced
until next week, I'm sure.
