One
of the best things about Carson Kressley (and I never
thought I’d say this) is that he truly appreciates the
way clothes look on a man. Straight Girl would be
more interesting if the style guru actually liked dressing
women because, well, she dug chicks. Honey tried to express
her joy over Rebekah’s new peach top, but before she
got a chance to compliment the girl’s impressive cleavage,
Robbie had already moved on to the handbag (really not as
interesting).
Similarly,
Honey’s attempts to make lesbo-centric jokes about latex
gloves and joysticks fell flat in the sneak preview episode
because the gay boys didn’t get it.
Honey’s
role on the show is also the vaguest of all four.
In order to clear things up, the official site for the show
offers this helpful explanation: “Her role touches on
all three areas — The Look, The Life, and The Locale
— as they relate to women. A working mother with an
innate sense of style, Honey is in the unique position to
counsel our straight girls in matters of career, family, sex
— and how to walk in heels.”
So
apparently Honey’s going to be the show's therapist
(appropriately enough for the lesbian) and will pick up the
pieces that the three gay boys leave behind. This strikes
me as the Jai role, but much less fun, because Honey probably
won’t get to take the straight girl dancing (since musclebound
Danny “The Life” Teeson used to be a choreographer).
Honey is a clearly a beauty, but in the midst of the three
hyper gay boys, she often comes off as a mom trying to herd
her unruly kids into the minivan. When Robbie discovers a
bullhorn in Rebekah’s kitchen that issues a shrieking
siren, Honey says, “Get that thing away from him!”
like an overworked babysitter.
But
then there are moments that make watching the show
worthwhile, like this one: Honey, dressed in a fetching gray
tank top and a toolbelt, picking up a drill and attacking
the wall as she declares, “I really want to show her
how to mount something.”
If
these are the kinds of scenes we can expect to see more of
as Honey grows into her role as the lone Queer grrl,
I for one will definitely be tuning in.
